Shalot's thread got me thinking. I have a habit of shortening peoples user names, I don't think I've ever asked anybody if they liked it or not I just do it. (ie Nightshade = Nightie, Dramasnot = Snot, etc...) So do you guys care? Does it bother anybody? And do you have pet names for other litnetters???

There are more. And then there are those that don't get shortened for whatever reason. like Virgil is just Virgil and Niamh is Niamh (although I just can't get away from the whole mental NI-MUH pronunciation I have going on - I've read how you're supposed to say it and I just can't get there) and Idril is Idril. and so on. and for whatever reason, papayahed is always papayahed instead of papaya - for some reason I can't shorten that one either. dunno why.

Actually the first time she did it, she did it Niki-- even more porn star!! Anyway I don't mind. I don't know why but other people change the spelling of it: Nikolay, Nicholai, Nicolai.
But anyhow, Nikki is fine. I don't care. I mean, if we ask the question, why would a series of letters mean anything anyway???
If anyone wants to, they can always call me Nikolai Ilyitch (my full name) Goldyakin. :) Or Nik, like most people do.

I hope I have covered a good number, most of those at least that I often shorten and others which I would have liked twisting but due to something/another couldn't. I am afraid I have this habit of shortening or twisting user-names too, find it fun and it saves time too (by shortening), hope people don't mind that. :p

Niamh, I think of two things when I see your name and both are due to your avatar and are LOTR related...and that last part shouldn't surprise anyone :blush:...anyway, I think of Ents because of the tree like appearance of your fairy and I think Avari, which is another name for the dark elves. Not dark as in evil, but dark because they've never seen the light of the Trees...long story that I won't go into but the dark elves were, for the most part, woodland dwelling people, hence the connection to your avatar.

These are affections. I hope they don't irritate...sometimes people don't read them right, and misconstrue. This hearkens back to my days in the military when I was known as Dr. B-Mental. I was in the infantry, and it was my personally given and platoon/company accepted position as name maker...I came up with the nickname for the people. Example: Doug Doomba = 2D; and the next guy with a similar name....Dan Denning = 3D or Dazzling Dan. Anyways, guys that got picked on didn't get picked on when they had a nickname from me....cuz the nickname was a warning...this one is a good Mother Hummer...this one gets the cowbell, whatever....It was a way of bringing diverse people together, and getting along.
Thats actually a really nice thing to see when you look at someones avatar. Yours always makes me think of dreamcatchers. And dont worry about Dark elves as evil. She is the queen of the bad faeries after all! :pQuote:

I usually don't shorten anyone's names, though I haven't thought about the reason before. Maybe it's because you can never know whether they like it or not, so writing the whole name is always a "safe" option.
