In January 2008, we will be reading a book by a South African author.

Have you read anything by Coetzee before?

I read "Disgrace" the year he won the Nobel Prize; before that I hadn't even heard his name. I would like to reread the book but I know I won't unless I have to (not because it's bad but because there are so many other books on my list ...) :)

I read Doris Lessing's Martha Quest many years ago. It was largely overlooked by the American public as we never came to terms with apartheid and its evil {the reason being that we were preoccupied with Vietnam and domestic racism}. The main character is a portrayal of a young South African woman who serves as a microcosm for the 20th century and its turbulence. The book is definitely worth considering.

Recently, Mrs Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and it was richly deserved.

Just found out about this place and like the idea of an online monthly book discussion.

Someone mentioned Doris Lessing. Her first novel, The Grass Is Singing, is worthy of a nomination.

Coetzee's Disgrace would be great for discussion.

I read The Conservationist a long time ago and don't remember all that much about it except that I liked it.

I'm very excited about this new year, and the turn that the Book Club has chosen for the following year. I think we should retain this format for future reference, and maybe make a rule that no country remain on for more than two years in a row. This would definitely diversify everyone.

There are some great books that people are referring, and I am happy to have some good ones to add to my list. I might just make January my South African reading month. Thanks everyone.

B-Mental> If we decide to follow 'Country of the Month' method the following year as well, probably we will make sure that the same countries do not get picked (we already have this rule for books: the same book cannot be read in two consecutive years).

I would have nominated this one too. :D I had it in my book shelf and a few days ago while looking at it, I just thought of trying it and now I am more than half way through it. (only about thirty pages are left!) I would say it's quite interesting.

I was planning on reading "Waiting for the Barbarians" by Coetzee so that would be my nomination.

After reading the reviews I'm torn between The Power of One and My Son's Story.

how exciting. I'd be happy to read any of these books in the book club. Although I did just read Coetzee's Disgrace not too long ago.

It reminds me of how I barely have enough students registered for the African literature course I'm teaching next semester.

I have also liked it, probably not too much but still it was good to read. The style was unique. Especially what attracted me was the freedom from 'speech-marks' by author. I wonder why he would do that. But it did make the reading more smooth for me I remember.
