Name My New Boat

O.K. so, I spent more than I had planned; but I bought the best boat on the 7 seas!! She's a Caribe Sunset 65, and she's in FLAWLESS condition. She's 65 feet long and her mast reaches 98 feet above the waterline. She has 5 queen size staterooms all with tv/dvd systems and their own heads (bathrooms) + 2 crew cabins, so she can sleep up to 14 people. An awesome galley (kitchen) and a HUGE salon with a state-of-the-art entertainment system. She has all the bells and whistles on the bridge that I ever dreamed of (and a few more that I knew existed but never dared hope that I'd own).

I guess what I've done is buy myself a mini floating five-star hotel. That will work perfectly for when I get tired of sailing around without a care in the world (read that as "when I get lonely") and I decide to settle down and take on charters (my money will dry up eventually).

What I need now is a name for this lovely dream-boat. Right now she has a Chinese name that sounds to me like what you'd hear if someone dropped an armload of silverware down a flight of stairs. (no offense to the Chinese; but the language is incomprehensible to my uneducated ear.... I can't even tell where one word ends and the next begins... It's too subtle)

What are your suggestions for a GREAT NAME for a GREAT BOAT?

how about "Farraige Sioga" or " Si na Muir"? they both mean Sea fairy!:p

Okay so one a more serious note, How about Saor? Its Irish for Free, because you are now Free!!!!!!!!! (Saoirse= freedom.)

Well since straight men like to name their boats after women, why don't you name your Bruce or something like that. ;)

Anyway, name her 'The Sailing Bob'
then you can have a ship motto that goes: 'Sailing for a Better Bob'
Or perhaps you find Bob a little too universal, in which case I recommend naming her 'Twirling raindrop' :)

Lachesis- after the fate who determines the path and length of your life (I think this is my personal favorite;))
finally I have the nereid (water nymph) Thetis who was the mother of Achilles. I'm pretty big on the names from Greek mythology, and I hope this helps you choose a name. Good luck to you.

Lachesis - Female name.... a polite nod to fate rather than something tempting it.... a very good name.

Bottoms Up - I really like the double meanings of drinking and gay sex (two of my favorite activities and hopefully two things that will happen A LOT on this new boat); but the third possible meaning troubles me...... capsizing!

Panthalassa - How have I never heard this word before today?? I know of Pangea; but never considered that the enormous globe covering sea from the same era had a name. And a beautiful name that rolls off of the tongue nicely, at that!

Finisterre - I love this one! Very appropriate since I intend to see every bit of the globe on this boat. It's also reminiscent of the warning that was placed on the open ocean on early maps from the time before most of the world was charted - "Here there be Monsters"

1) It's a really common boat name.... I know of at least 3

2) I don't like the temporary nature of it.... If I were going to live somewhere and vacation on the boat, then it would be perfect; but I plan to live on this boat and hopefully die there as well (not anytime soon, mind you, but at a ripe old age many many years from now).


Another excellent suggestion that I've rejected is Scheherazade's "Mal de Mer". This fell by the wayside because "Mal de Mer Man" was the name of my primary fishing boat and because I no longer suffer from Mal de Mer (sea-sickness). But I did give serious consideration to "Mal de Mer No More".

for Beautiful.
