hey folks,
I've done a recording of me reading out the opening monologue from Richard III.
it's split up in two parts and in the second part i started some lines again, because the recording device played up.
the first part is dull, but in the second one I tried to sound EEEEEVIL :)
the mic was dead cheap, so my voice sounds weird :) (well, it sounds weird enough in real life)

i had to read those passages for a course and I thought "oops, what if the teachers asks us to read it out and everyone is caught unprepared and we end up reading out " erh prffrgrr, what?" ... so i practiced them a dozen times each and then i thought why not record them :):blush:

the Everyman thingy was strange to read... it's GOD speaking, but when you look at what he's got to say... well he sounds like "baaaah, nobody likes me, everyone's mean, moan moan moan whine whine"... i tried to imagine an old man with a long beard reaing it in a thunderous voice, but somehow I'm not sure that would work...

Well i've no way of doing it...Dont have the technology.:(

I could record mine....but I have no clue how to upload it to that website. I am rather inept at following directions sometimes too...

yeah.. i used the webspace of my German mailbox... you can give others access to your folders for 30 days... but i don't know any other web thingy where you can load up sound files.. maybe on one of those myspace thingies?

i tried to record some unscripted speech earlier on and all I could think of was "Hello, I'm SleepyWitch. Er, I don't know what to say. The weather is nice..er yah".. so I didn't post that one.

*edit*: i don't think your voice sounds very nasal.. mine sound nasal although i don't have any allergies or sinus conditions :) you're doing comparativley well :)

who knows, there could be a market for it :) I think in England whole generattions of people listened to the shipping news.. even people who didn't have anything to do with ships... they just liked to listen to them so much..
so why not times and dates.. would be nice for a change :)

(don't remember if it's called shipping news, but i think i read a story about it in the Times)

There's a site called Putfile which is used to upload audio file (it's used quite a lot at another forum I visit), but it seems to hate me so I had to use something else. I'll be back later, I'm going to un-dig my file LOL

P.S. I can't reach Sleepy's files, or rather I reach them (thanks to my vague German :lol:) but then they play for only one second or so...

Koa, you've absolutely no reason to worry about your English ! There are a lot of Italian ERASMUS students here at my university, and some of them told me they never get a chance to speak English at their Italian university, which would account for their accent, but now that I've heard you speak, I don't believe you're from the same country ! Your English is very good !

Kathy, I love the Massachusetts promotion ! :) You have the same skilful intonation newsreaders have :nod:.

Oh it's great to hear your voices!! Sleepy you read that great. Have you training in acting? I don't know if it was historically accurate but the dialect sounded just like a Renaissance English accent of Shakespeare's day. Must be the slight German of your personal speech makes it sound distant and older. You sound great.

Kathy, that is not how I imagined your voice. It has no New England accent at all. You sound very much like a teacher, explaining to us Massechusetts. ;)

i have training in watching Patrick Stewart, hahah :):blush:
at the moment my english is quite muddled up... one of my brain cells tries to speak RP, the other the slight Coventry accent i picked up in England and the third tries hard to suppress its German accent...

actually, Shaky is said to have spoken with a broad Warwickshire accent (i.e. exactly the region I lived in for a year)

Koa, you do have an accent but it definitely doesn't sound like a typical Italian accent. :) I couldn't have told from your accent that you're Italian if I hadn't known that anyway.

Heh, heh, well I sound like most other native Mass people..lived here my whole life. I think for a real "New Englandey" accent you should listen to somebody from northern rural Maine. Even that is diminishing I imagine because people move around so much.

Yup, you will need a microphone. I got a microphone/headset combination from Staples office supply store for just about $13. :)

Yeah, you definitely pick up the coventry part of Sleepy's voice. I will get around to posting mine tomorrow (my only recording device is on my webcam - which I do not currently have hooked up to my computer)

It's great to hear all your voices. Each of you has a really lovely speaking voice. I think we should start up a lit. net. radio broadcast--or maybe make up recordings of all the books we've got online heare.:lol: :) However, I had trouble hearing Sleepy's recordings for some reason. All I got is "Now is the winter of our discontent" from the first Richard III, and the others didn't come through at all. :(

Like Virg. I haven't the foggiest how to record myself for the computer. Kathy, the microphone part sounds fairly attainable and inexpensive, but how complicated is it to set up the computer to get things from the mic. to the forums? Do you need special software?

hey Kathy you've made me want to find out more about Mass-. It's great to hear your accent! I've always imagined you might have gotten a bit of an irish frim the ex but alas no!

Hmm, the only software I used is the soundrecorder program. It is standard with Windows usually. I am running windows xp, but I think other versions have it. Try start/programs/accessories/entertainment - that is where my soundrecorder program was hiding. :)

Once you have the mic hooked up, (and it just plugs into the computer), you run soundrecorder program and start recording your message. I love hearing people talk, so this could be lots of fun!! Petrach, you would need to find somebody to host the sound file, and then paste the link here. I use fileden.

(btw, Niamh, the ex lived in London for the first 12 years of his life. His parents were from Donegal and returned there because London was a bit rough for them. He didn't really have a thick accent at all, not like other people in their town....nor like my ex father in law. I could never understand a word he said, his accent was very thick. I used to just nod and say "mmmhmm". :p )

I lived with a girl from Donegal when i was in college and it took me a while to understand also!:lol: But it could have been worse! It could have been a kerry accent!

Well, you know how New Englanders pronounce it. But you pronounced it quite normal (normal American, that is) before hand in your natural speaking voice.

Absolutely true, that Italians have bad English because of that. But I'm not the average Italian in that, because I had more opportunities to speak English. And I live in the Uk now and I think I improved a lot in these months I've spent here.

Of course I know how to say "cah" I have lived in Mass my whole life. I think you expect everybody here to sound like Steve Sweeney. :p Does everybody in New York sound like Fran Drescher? Gosh, I hope not, that would be wicked hahsh. (very harsh). ;)

I dont think your accent is that anglicised Kilted! My friend Elizabeth is scotish but most of the time you forget it because its very anglicised (also because her mum is english)
Where did you live when you where in scotland? you have a very mild almost east coast scottish accent.

Glasgow? you are kidding me!:lol: There isnt even a glasgow twang in your accent!

Nope, it's glasgow. The accent is a result of a english mother, a gran who would not have her grandson speaking like a damn ned, and speech therapy lessons because of convulsions as an infant which led to me not picking up letter sounds in the correct manner at an early age.

Nice voice, Kilted! I find accented speech quite nice to listen to. Well, I suppose that seems dumb because everybody has an accent of some kind, but to me as an American I enjoy listening to the speech of those from other countries.

It is interesting how variables other than location affect one's speech. My mother had a very typical Boston accent, I think the kind Virgil thought I would have. But I had many teachers in school who were not from New England, so I suppose I got into the habit of pronouncing "R" s on the ends of words.

I think in a homogenous, stable population you can expect folks to have the same regional accent, but once that population becomes diversified, accents change. I mean, my next door neighbor is from New York state, the college kids across the street are from Puerto Rico and the family around the corner is Vietnamese. They all speak English, but it certainly isn't "Yankee English".

Niamh, Virgil, Schoko, once you've got a headset (there are really cheap ones around; mine was 10 Euros) all you need to do is plug it in and then click the "start" button in your windows task bar. go to "programmes" and then there should be "accessories" or something there were you can find an audio recorder. it comes for free with windows. there's a red button. click this button to start your recording, click the stop button to stop recording. and save the file when you are done.

for some reason, the stupid thing stops recording after a while and you have to press the button again to continue... at least that's what mine does.

hurumpf, I'm not sure it's called "accessories" in the English version of windows.
