What gives you satisfaction from life?
I have been feeling very smug and satisfied with myself lately after being hired in my school for the third time for a for a new position. This means that I have worked very hard. Alright, so that is one example of self satisfaction. Here is another; my husband started his own business and now has 4 employees working under him. He is very smug right now.
What do you do with your life to feel this way?

I've finally summoned the strength to put my mom out of my life. I'm going to put her into an assisted living home, and then I'm going to give my brother as her contact. They can call him, not me. It will be 2 or 3 months before the transition can be made, but I'm so ready to let go of this heavy burden of being "on call" for her.
Right now being free of my mother is the only satisfaction I can think of.
The only thing I want for Christmas is to be free of my mother. :biggrin5:

For me satisfaction comes from giving to the people around me. I take great pride in making someone's day a bit brighter, easier, or just a little bit less horrible. I am most satisfied when I am spending time with my loved ones and doing something just a little bit more special than normal. This past weekend it was a mini adventure. This coming weekend it is helping to prepare for Thanksgiving, and before I know it Christmas time will be here with all the work I do for others then. So, yeah, for me satisfaction comes from giving of myself to other people.
As far as feeling smug goes ..... nothing beats catching a young lady's eye, then perhaps complimenting her, flirt with her in a smooth fashion. If I can get her to blush, then that feeling of smugness comes.
The smuggest I've ever felt was when I caused a girl to walk straight into a wall. But I just got the worst hair-cut of my life yesterday, a real hack-job, like someone went at a garden hedge drunk and blind-folded with a dull axe, and so I doubt I'll be feeling very smug for some time to come.
Everytime I finished my task or work that assigned for me to do and if I’ve done something to make someone smile, that will satisfy me.
When I make or devise something that works well and costs nothing. Like my homemade bespoke searchlight mount on my ATV, £20 to buy, mine was free and better. I'm very smug about it.
Getting an A+ in a class of four hundred that's graded on a curve. There's nothing that grants more smug satisfaction than maneuvering past dozens of nervous students packed into a hallway around a grades list and innocently saying "oh, there I am!" with your finger on the very top of the far left hand side. Then make sure to primly walk away and pretend that you don't even notice the glares. Hah!
This is really very sad, but at the moment nothing is giving me more pleasure than decluttering. I feel a distinct swell of pride every time I open a cupboard or drawer, see everything neatly folded/hanging/boxed and know there is no rubbish lurking in the depths. The house is on the market, someone must surely come soon, see my carefully ordered lifestyle and aspire to live such an organised life in this clean, freshly decorated, Des Res. (NB - Remind Agent to make sure attention is drawn to the walk-in wardrobe, colour co-ordinated, all outfits bagged, all woolies boxed.) I told you it was sad.....but don't worry, it won't last long.
Mick - you wouldn't fancy a quick trip down to West Wales for first refusal on the stuff I've hauled out of the garage, would you? I'm sure you, like my husband, could put a lot of it to use. You may even be able to identify some of it!
There are a lot of things that provide satisfaction, though I try not to be smug, and rarely feel that way.
Some things on the list that satisfy me in my life (not in any particular order):
1. Completing a project, paper, large task, etc.
2. Finishing a really good book
3. Writing something valuable and that others enjoy reading or thinking about
4. Helping someone
5. Volunteering or community service, especially working with children (generally seeing the fruits of one's labor)
6. Attaining a goal
7. Being understood and understanding someone else
And many more... though, lately, I have not been feeling very satisfied. I feel like, for the first time in my life, I am without a clear goal, and I also feel like I am not contributing anything useful to society. I have to get out of this rut.
Ahh I used to get that as well, I miss that feeling. Now I don't get that anymore, I don't even feel satisfaction from fornication, it is more like just eating breakfast. Not something particularly enjoyable but it is necessary.Quote:

I meant what gives you satisfaction from something you worked hard for. Yes, it is satisfying to be admired, but that's superficial. I am looking for examples of things people have struggled to accomplished and gained a real sense of inner pride. What gives you a deep personal satisfaction generated from hard work and accomplishment? For example, being an asthmatic and struggling through a marathon. Something that is so damn hard you want to quit, but you keep at it- because you want to win or succeed for your own personal gratification. On the lighter side, I think such examples as de-cluttering can be satisfying especially of you tend to be a pig. Also building something as a hobby gives a kind of self satisfaction. These are not necessarily easy things to do and they require commitment and mental exertion.
Please keep sharing. The examples are great so far.
