you don't hear much about world's fairs these days. makes ya wonder if they even still have them.
I have no loyalty to toothpaste brands, so ive tried as many as there are---colgate, crest, aim, glean, pepsodent, close-up, aquafresh, and a half dozen others whose names are lost of obscurity. so ~13.
how many of your grade school and high school friends went by their nicknames as opposed to their given names?
-
Looks like 13 or so in the last 25 years in one manner or another according to wikipedia, with Osaka (2025) and Belgrade (2027) planned next. The last was in Dubai (2021-2022) with Buenos Aires (Expo 2023) being cancelled :(
nicknames: most went by last names, then first names, and lastly some nicknames... the usual nicknames for some of my friends: mouth, the man... ~10 ??
How many times did it take you to get your driver's license ?
-
you think the worlds fair folks would do well to coincide them with other huge events, like the Olympics for instance.
I only had one friend growing up who went by his nickname. I don't know where his nickname came from but no one used his given name.
just one thankfully. I think that was the case with most of us.
how many foreign languages do you know small polite phrases in, like "hello" or "please" or "thank you" etc.?

How many apples have you eaten in the last week ?
-
well now tailor, you cant just say the number! you have to show off your multi-lingual greeting skills! arrivederci!
no apples. fresh fruit is sooo expensive. however, I was at a convenience store yesterday and got an okay deal on a couple of bananas.
have probably asked this one before, or one very much like it----how many toppings would go on your dream pizza? money is no object!
-
oh, forgot arrivederci, and some British English slang - 7
bananas good... been getting free apples and pears from friends, and my home plums of course with prune plums soon? and figs, albeit sparse this year.
Not too many: Linguiça, peperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, black olives, three different cheeses topped with sprinkled parm. and thousand island dressing on the side.
How many school friends do you still keep contact with ?
-
-
Sorry guys for butting in!Linguiça in US!Then there is possibly also a Calabreza(Calabrian) pizza with or without onions and topped with mozzarella.
And what about the Californian pizza topped with cheese and canned fruits?
-
Mmm... love linguiça... Linguiça and eggs is a real breakfast treat :)
Hadn't heard of Calabreza pizza but it sounds delicious... https://www.tastingtable.com/396619/...ypes-of-pizza/
-
ack danik, canned fruit on pizza! although I do love pineapple---I wonder what other fruit might work.
and hey, youre on the hook for tailors question: "How many school friends do you still keep contact with?"
(and i'll give you five dollars if you show up here regularly!)
-
taylor:"Mmm... love linguiça... Linguiça and eggs is a real breakfast treat"
Looked at the pizza thread and was amazed at the different pizzas US produces. And the names are partly the same as ours but they designate very different dishes. Brazilian pizzas don´t differentiate crusts: simple fast food shops have only one type of crust, elegant pizza shops offer thin, medium and thick crusts and borders with or without cheese fillings, and that is that. None of your square pizzas which look much more like a cake.
No, the difference is in the toppings and their variety of it.Have a look here guys:https://caminhoslanguages.com/blog/brazilian-pizza/
Note: Pizza Calabreza would be the Calabrian pizza. Though taylor´s link doesn´t give the details of the toppings our Calabreza looks like the pizza on the photo of the Calabrian. Mostly Linguiça calabreza, a kind of sausage, with or without onions, with or without cheese.
bounty: "ack danik, canned fruit on pizza! although I do love pineapple---I wonder what other fruit might work."
The tread above forgot to mention "Pizza à Califórnia" among the dessert pizzas. Califonian pizzas with Pepperoni- No never, jamais!
Actually I think the topping originated not as a pizza topping, but as an usual Christmas and New Year favorite garnishing for the Christmas turkey or the Christmas duck: The most usual canned fruit employed are canned peaches, figs and pineapples and fresh cherries. The cheese is added only in the pizza topping.

Editing of the post above not possible so completing here.
and hey, youre on the hook for tailors question: "How many school friends do you still keep contact with?"
(and i'll give you five dollars if you show up here regularly!)
With no one as I changed school very often and also was very shy. But I keep in contact we some friends of the University. Most of them have grandchildren now.
How many schools did you visit and where?
As for bounty´s bounteous offer, it is very tempting:D! I wont promise to participate regularly though as some themes are very US and I won´t disturb your moments of reminescence. But I follow the thread and if you allow, will but in sometimes.(:
-
I think you can add cheese to any fruit and have it be a good combination---I see though the "fruit pizza" doesn't seem to have tomato sauce. that would have been the weird disqualifying factor. cheese sounds okay with bananas. tomato sauce and bananas though, bleech!
noooooooo danik, youre very invited and maybe the themes will start to become more international or generic.
oh gee---that's almost impossible to answer. when you play sports in school, you go to oodles of different schools to play. unless you mean something else by "visit" danik?
-
Prefer no fruit on my pizza... tried pineapple for a while, but I'm over it.
Schools, not including chess tournaments/or otherwise:
3-elementary: Seattle/San Mateo, CA
2-JHS: San Mateo/Stockton, CA
1-HS: Newark, CA
1-Uni: Hayward, CA
1-JC: Saratoga, CA (1-day/1-class)... I usually forget this one (lol)
1-Tech: Santa Clara, CA
How many times has your power gone out in the last year ? (can't keep track here... too many times :( )
-
Thanks, bounty@!:"I think you can add cheese to any fruit and have it be a good combination---I see though the "fruit pizza" doesn't seem to have tomato sauce. that would have been the weird disqualifying factor. cheese sounds okay with bananas. tomato sauce and bananas though, bleech! " The fruit on the pizza are either combined with mozzarella or, more usually, with a milder more creamy sort of cheese called "catupiry" after it´s trade mark. I don´t recollect it having tomato sauce. The dessert pizzas don´t.
"oh gee---that's almost impossible to answer. when you play sports in school, you go to oodles of different schools to play. unless you mean something else by "visit" danik?" I used the wrong verb. I mean: to how many schools did you go?
@tailor: I wonder if I remember my schools as well as you do:
1Preschool-Assis-SP
3 elementary schools, I think all in SP
3 secondary schools RJ (Rio de Janeiro
Universidade de São Paulo- grad and after.
I think it is more than a year ago that power has gone out.
How many music videos/cds/streaming and which did you watch/hear in the last days?
-
hmm, thanks to my way too expensive but otherwise new super fast internet, maybe 8-9?
a couple inspired by tailor's "smithereens" post, a couple old ones from the 2017 season of "the voice" (chloe kohanski), a few by garbage performing im only happy when it rains (my favorite is the "duet" with Chrissy hynde) and a re-run of (I had shared this with tailor before) heart performing stairway to heaven at the kennedy center honors from 2012.
an oldie but a goodie, how many pages left in the book youre presently reading?
-
Congratulations ! i'm only happy when it rains... on the soundtrack of Captain Marvel :)

How many days since you last changed a lightbulb ?
-
im delayed in the responding tailor so im guessing maybe you are finished with your last 42 pages.
yes, when she steals the motorcycle and heads off in search of her memories.
hmmm, within the last 20ish I think. I had a nifty three-pronged LED jobbie in my garage, and I dropped it, seemingly breaking it, so I had to put in a new old fashioned bulb.
remember the disaster that was those curlie-q bulbs? more expensive, less light, toxic components, etc.
how many teaspoons of sugar in your coffee or tea?
-
Used to be 3. Now 0 because I have to avoid sugar. So no coffee or tea any more.
How many books do you read in a month (aproximately)?
-
re: books - although I'm an avid and constant reader I average less than 1-book/month.
42 is nod to Douglas Adams... https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...the-number-42/
re: sugar - doesn't go well in peppermint tea and I haven't had coffee in 18+ years, so... 0.
How many trips to the hardware store in the last month ?
-
good timing on that one tailor. I own property and we spent the day yesterday (and will be part of today) working on a leak. two trips to the local hardware store, one to home depot, and three to our basement supply storage area.
so either 3 or 6 depending on how you reckon.
this doesn't technically count, but we just put a new roof on a house we own and that necessitated a half dozen visits to lumber supply stores.
danik, I use flavored water to sweeten my tea. it works really well.
I remember "42" from a big bang theory episode where raj and howard are trying to figure out why Sheldon has the number 37 (if I remember rightly) written on a white board in a basement supply room.
how many movies on your "I wanna see this" list?
-
Yeah, I've been told it isn't a project, or a project done right, unless you've been to the hardware store at least 3-times.
Sheldon's #37 was a hoot :)
Movies ? Just 2 and I'll prolly have to wait: "everywhere, somewhere, and something"? and Oppenheimer.
How many of your neighbors have kitschy Pink Flamingoes in their yard ?
-
Lol!
0 as everybody lives in skyscrapers without gardens or yards. Sometimes there are garages instead. So no place for kitchy flamingos.
I don't know if we have flavored water here. Anyway thanks for the suggestion.
How many cups of water do you drink per day?
-
1 Attachment(s)
I haven't peeked at this yet tailor, but I plan to:
https://outdoordiscoverer.com/25-cla...s-bucket-list/
i liked the early BBT episodes (all in re-runs) but I don't like the later ones really. same with young Sheldon.
danik im sure you do---little packets of artificially sweetened crystals that you drop in the water. all the grocery stores and all the "dollar" type stores here have them and theres dozens of flavors. when will you be going food shopping next?
i'll keep my eyes peeled for pink flamingoes as I ride around.
I don't drink plain water at home---I have a well and the water tastes like minerals but when I add the aforementioned flavoring, I drink probably at least 3-4 cups a day. a little more if im doing the 20ish mile roundtrip bike ride into the nearby city.
if tailor's dreaded zombie apocalypse happened tomorrow, how many weeks worth of food do you have in your house so that you don't have to venture out and get eaten?
-
Very little bounty . I often buy ready food like rice, potatoes and meat and mix fresh vegetables into the rice or whatever
. This food usually lasts for one or two days. During pandemics I had more food at home.
With the present heat, I think I drink about 6 cups of water a day.
How many good movies have you seen this year?
-
Maybe 10 good streaming movies, some I'd seen before... nothing good in my few theater visits.
How many sources do you use for current events ?
-
so tailor, if the zombie apocalypse comes, and the mail service is still operating, we'll have to send danik some food.
I just stopped my DISH-tv service, so no more news on the telly. a teeny bit of radio when im in the garage (it comes on with the lights). everything else is online. I regularly go to a place where there are 4-5 sister sites of news and commentary, so I don't know if that counts as 1, or 4-5!
my "home page" is msn, but that's a conglomeration of many different sites for a variety of news. and since ive got high speed internet now, I was able to resurrect my "myyahoo" page, which also has modules from a variety of places covering different aspects of life.
one might say 4, one being my sister sites, one being msn, one being yahoo, and one being the radio but the middle two have a myriad of iterations. so maybe the answer is 4 to many dozens.
danik, since you are upside down below the equator, this one might be just for tailor---how many weeks until you might get your first snowfall?
-
Hi, bounty
I hope you hadn't to stop your telly news because of the high speed internet.
My internet pages are similar as yours they have several sources, in Portuguese they are called portals. I have got portal U O L, MSN and CBN Brazil and also Deut hug ýý makesamong others, but many sites are behind paywalls. That makes four.
At 35 grades Celsius I pass the snow question on to tailor.
-
re: food - ok
re: Snowfall possibility usually no earlier than late November... I'll estimate 10 weeks, just after Thanksgiving. (35°C × 9/5) + 32 = 95°F... very warm Spring days for S.P. )
How many ice cubes in your fridge (estimate) ?
-
no more telly danik---the internet is expensive, the actual physical tv was starting to breakdown, and I found a few different websites that have free tv and movies. i'll miss some things, but gain others. the end result of all the recent additions and subtractions of services is that i'll be spending about 700-800 dollars less per year.
we usually get some snowflakes in late October, but it rarely stays on the ground.
no ice cubes but I have two of those little plastic things with frozen water inside them that work like ice cubes. I also have, though I don't have them in my freezer, plastic cups that have an inner and outter layer with water in between them that can be frozen. pretty nifty.
in your usual travels---whats the most iterations of any one type of commercial enterprise? for instance, my area has 3 dollar general stores I frequently pass by (or visit). we're about to get a 3rd tim Horton's.
-
Easily Christmas Tree farms... https://www.pickyourownchristmastree...Axmaseldor.php some prolly not even listed. The closest is 1-mile away (exactly) with a second just a little further the other way... and another ~ 3.5 miles away.
Never heard of Tim Hortons... A Dollar Tree maybe 15?-miles away South over the river and through the woods and a Dollar General 15?- miles away the other way in Cool not too far from the 2-forks confluence of the same river. McDonalds just before the Dollar Tree and another across the same town near the only Walmart for miles a little further away.
How many pairs of shoes do you wear the most often ?
-
In my street there is emporium M&M, a family store founded by a Spanish emigrant about 60 years ago. Now the store is managed mainly by his son, but 86 year old Manolo still enjoys sitting in his store and doing some lighter business. There is also an OXXO, three fast food restaurants, one more sophisticated coffee shop and restaurant. There are also four small supermarkets near by ( mainly extra and one Carefour).
To the nearest Mc Donalds, here recently christened "Méqui"(probably US sold the rights ) one has to take the bus.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRaHI8qZFqk
As for shoes, at home I wear my Ipanema flip-flops and when I go out a sort of Mokassin shoes.
How many trips downtown or to the nearest town you do in one week to buy food and household articles?
-
i live 4ish miles away from the village, and 10ish miles away from the nearby city so think ahead a little bit.
id say I have a range of once per week, to once per three weeks.
but there is a small caveat danik---there is a store here called "big lots" and they put really inexpensive food out on their clearance shelves. anywhere from 25-75% off. so usually when im in the city, i'll stop there just to see what they have. also, for every three purchases you make, you get a 5 dollar off a 15 dollar purchase coupon, which I use exclusively on the clearance food. I make out like a bandit!
tailor---tim hortons is a donut place like dunkin' donuts.
I see I misstated my intention though---I shouldn't have used the word "type" when I was really meaning to ask about the same franchise but that's okay.
we all have memorized old phone numbers, our social security numbers, pi---but if someone were to give you some new non-sequential, non-patterned number right now, how many digits long before you couldn't remember it all?
-
7 digits ?
How many browsers on your main system ? (just added Safari 5.1. 7 to the mix (again)... the last Windows compatible version... so far acting nice with LitNet... too early to tell )
-
7 seems do-able to me too. although it might depend on the numbers too.
i have edge and chrome and a seemingly defunct internet explorer. so just 2.
how many bags of leftover/clearance halloween candy might you be buying soon?
-
0... have to watch my A1C :)
How many of "your" NFL teams made the playoffs ?
-
I could only barely call the bills "my" team, but given their historic underdog status, I was also rooting for the lions and the browns.
so 1 for sure, possibly extended to 3.
how many days/weeks/months since your last visit to the dentist?
-
The obvious dystopian literary answer would be 40... or 42, depending on one's point of reference. I still have all four of my wisdom teeth which I understand is quite unusual in some circles I associate with :)
How many fishing or hunting trophies grace your home ? ("Big Mouth Billy Bass"('s) count double)
-
oh tailor, you are forgetting my animal loving, animal saving, vegetarian anti-hunting ways! zero trophies here.
yes, I think having all four wisdom teeth well into adulthood is a rarity.
how many days until the next "unseasonably warm" day?
-
Not even a "Big Mouth Billy Bass"... me neither.
I'll guess 17X7 days =119 days (mid June)
How many times have you split fire wood this past month ?
