How pleasant it is to find a site like this
This seems to be a home for we who search for an on-line site where "real" ideas of all sorts might be found. I’ve never written in such a forum, so I don’t quite know how to speak my thoughts. Well, since I’m good at dialog, conversations here might well be mutually rewarding...
Identity first: I’m of a time of much more formality in writing, a curse in a time of swift wording. Unless careful, I become like Henry James . (Now there: Even that was more of an apologia than an introduction!)
I like reading and writing and the arithmetic of sorting words into coherence of “tell-craft”. Wishing to separate depth from breadth I try to listen very closely and to be less than wordy.
Is this of any interest to you? Wishing an answer soon, I’ll cat-like leap to put these few lines onto the forum.
Thanks to all of you of cleverness and friendliness. I hope to be able to be part of this on-line conversational home.
FYI: I'm an old guy in San Francisco, where I've lived most of my life.
Hello. I just registered and have posted a few poems in the Personal Poetry forum. I'm a teacher of Latin, history, and English. Right now, I'm attempting to collect and read all 20 of Zola's Rougon-Macquart novels - in order - even though I've read a few individually before.
Hello to all the newbies :) hope you have fun here.
Thanks for your most interesting note, reminding me of yet another subject that I’ve wished to learn more. My own areas of study have been numerous, and now--- you give me another one! How to do it all in one lifetime? Because of the fascination these novels hold for so many, I'll search for a copy of the 1st volume. How far beyond that must remain a topic of conjecture. (You see, I’ve attempted to have a life unbounded by any one discipline. While this has its virtues, a fatal failing of such a life is that it leaves one existing as little more than a painful example of Hegel’s “absence of freedom” [where freedom is “perfect obedience to perfect law”]. )Quote:

I shall certainly read your poetry, since such writing is of intense interest to me. After studying and reading it for very many years, I realize that I know less and less about how to define it. I do believe, however, that is the fountainhead of all literary (and more) expression.
Any prefatory comments before I look at what you’ve been doing?
My typeface became monstrous, quite inadvertently. Many apologies, GeorgeW
Agreed: Literature need have no other end than its own expression. (My writing often sounds too much like self-indulgent Edwardian speech. You see, I find it difficult to express my thoughts simply, truly and properly.) In this case, then, using simpler terms, perhaps, let me say, "Sit back and watch the sun rise".Quote:

Hey Geochel, Welcome abroad!
Hello everyone... welcome and have fun just like we all do. :D
Thank you Petrarch. That is so beautiful. I really wish I was good in languages. I envy all of you that are proficient in more than one. When I see someone that is proficient in multiple (I'll single out you and Koa, but there are several of you) languages, I am in complete awe. I've made fun of myself in many posts where I tell everyone how I've studied Spanish for five years between Jumior Jigh and High school and even one semester in College and still I can't write a simple sentence. Forget-about-it if someone actually spoke to me in Spanish.Quote:

Welcome George W. It sounds like you have a wide variety of interests. If you like poetry you might like to join us on the poem of the week thread under poems, poets and poetry.
Welcome to Geochelonian too. A latin teacher? O boy another linguist enters the fray. :D Good luck with the Zola novels. I've never read any of them.

Even might have said,
"Hey there, hi there, what you got there?"
Doesn't the old standby come to mind?
"Woah! There are so many avatars out there - kind of makes mine feel small."
Go get them lynx-boy!
Thank you, Petrarch,Quote:

[FONT=Comic Sans MS]Hello readers and writers, The older I get the less I am inclined to say so I will prolly be a reader and remain quiet much of the time. I just felt I couldn't go along not announcing my presence in your community. Take very good care all.
What a friendly, bantering cyber place this is.
Well. My first post. I was reading favorite quotes, wanted to add one and here I am introducing myself, I guess, and saying hello. Looking forward to the reading and posting ahead. Good wishes

Miss-fire, Welcome to the forum! Keep on posting!
Welcome newbies! come on in, grab a chair, and make yourselves at home :)
Hello all! Just wanted to say hi! I'm american, live abroad and love the internet as it allows discussion on a range of topics I would otherwise not have the chance to discuss given my present location!
Hello again!
Hello sir, welcome to the forums!
Do you enjoy teaching abroad?
I am currently working at an English Department at a private university in South Korea.
I love teaching abroad, but it can be frustrating sometimes. But I wouldnt trade the freedom (academic and ability to travel) for the wordl!
Thanks for askin!
cool, I would love to have a job that encouraged travel. How many languages do you speak?
I speak english (obviosuly) -- my french is okay and my Korean is passable, but my Japanese is weak.
Reading and learning Kanji (Japenese) is much harder than Hangul (Korean). How about you?
Hello. New here. I love literature, so I thought this was the perfect place for me.
" If you want something done, ask a busy person."
Hey Bronk!
Me too! Welcome aboard? What's you fav. genre?
Welcome  :
miss fire-- Is there a context for the funny little animated square guys in your avatar, or is it a non sequitor? I find them amusingly hypnotic :).
stevnl--glad to welcome you to the forums. Hope you find a little home away from home here :).
bronkx-- Hi, hope you enjoy it here.
Welcome steven and bronk!
I speak english, and I can get by in french, I know some german, and my mandarin is laughable, but I'm still working on it. It's the subtle differences in tone that get me.Quote:

Hello everybody, I am just posting my first comment. It's kind of an introduction. I love literature, infact that's my profession. I write and read a lot. I enjoy all genres and I look forward to a wonderful interaction within the community.
Cheerful welcomes to:
Jackyyy: Welcome aboard. I've always liked Wuthering Heights myself, though it's been some years since I last read it. I like the first half better than the second though.
Samchim: What is your literary related profession? Teacher? Writer? I'm going into teaching myself (currently in grad. school).
Hope you both have fun here.
Hi All
