What is the last movie you saw? and rate it.

I looked 'much ado' up on amazon before and it wasnt available. might give it another shot though! you just never know! and if i'm able to get it it would be because of you;)
I never got to see B's Othello but i did get to act as iago once in a tutorial in my theatre studies class which was fun i must say! probably the reason why i ended up as the Devil Titivillus in the morality play mankind in the next simester:lol:
I've also never seen dead again but i'll keep a look out for it!

good to hear you did film studies in college Janine! I also got to watch so good oldies in college too. Psycho was one of the movies we watched along side some more modern movies like the long good friday. We also watched some silent movies including battleship potempkin, which is famous for its montage and the scene with the baby in the buggy rolling down the stairs. I also did irish cinema so we watched alot of movies about the ira, oh and not to forget the wonderful Ryans Daughter! And a movie that is banned in ireland calledShake Hands with the Devil.:nod:
And Yes i have seen Roman Holiday! My Parents used to sit us down when we were younger and make us watch all their favourites; a nuns story, my fair lady, hello dolly, carousel, bridge over river kwai, gone with the wind, meet me in st louis, the parent trap, Calamity Jane to name a few. Big fans of doris day in this family. my sister idolises her!
you should check ot roma cita aperta (rome open city). it is amazing. Its about the fall of fascism and the fascists leaving rome. There is actual documentary footage of the leaving shot by Rosselini himself. By the way Rosselini was once married to the fabulous ingrid bergman and is the father of Isabella Rosselini.:D

Niamh, I just looked it up on Amazon (USA) and it was expensive for Region 2 - over $50 - wow. I went then to amazon.co.uk. Sometimes when hunting for British films, I have been directed there. Is that the one you use? I did see this one, not sure this link is correct now - looks incomplete somehow. Anyway, you can look it up in the site. It seems to sell for L8.95 - something like that. You can buy in the used section starting at L3.95, or rent it online apparently.

Would you believe I have never watched "Psysho"? I was always seeing the shower scene in previews and figured I would be scared to take another shower:lol: . The film is on my list and my library has a copy. I always watch Hitchock films and love them. I have been collecting them, but have mainly tapes I got cheap, when the video store sold them out. I was in a nightclub in Philadelphia in the late 70's and actually bumped into Anthony Perkins, by accident. He was there in the club with friends. My friend spotted him and I did not believe her. Sure enough it was him.

So interesting that you did the Iago part. I love that role and Branagh does a great job with it. Villians are always somehow more fascinating, aren't they? You have to see the Parker film - you will like it. Lots of closeups and intrigue.

I don't know if I can rent it here, but hope to see it someway soon. I love films about the overthrow of fascism and the Nazi's. I have watched so many now involving so many nations - it seems to fascinate me more and more. I like that documentary footage. Glad it was added and by Rosselini himself - how great is that?
I thought that was the Rosselini married to Ingrid Bergman. I love her - she was great and beautiful. I saw her in "Casablanca" and "Black Narcisis"(I might have spelled that wrong). I like their daughter emensely and think she is stunningly beautiful as well.
I think I saw "Ryan's Daughter" years ago. I love the John Wayne/Maureen O'Hara movie "The Quiet Man". So funny, I saw all those films you just mentioned at the end of that paragraph - your parent's films. I must be their generation. :) Glad you had the great film exposure. I just re-watched "My Fair Lady" - it had been years. You know Doris Day was not my favorite really. She was a bit cutsy for me. I think she was good, but not as great as some other woman stars.

Sorry, this is kind of off topic, but I had a question for those of you who are fans of Shakespearean adaptations.

Has anyone come across any recordings of Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of King Lear for the stage? I've seen clips on tv programs before, but I'd love to see the whole play. As you can probably guess from my avatar, I'm a big fan of his, and I think he'd be a fabulous King Lear.

I had never heard of that, but I think I will try to research it and see what I can come up with. I like Sir Anthony, too. I loved him in "Remains of the Day" and "Howard's End", and many many more.

Did you look on Amazon? Umm... I have only seen the Lawrence Olivier Lear. There is another one with Ian Holme I think. It is a more contemporary version. It would be interesting to see Hopkins play Lear now that he is older. I had never connected him to the role. Perhaps it was a BBC production made for TV that you happened to see parts of. Going to go research now - you have made me curious.

It lists all his films. I see he did play "Titus" Andronicus in 1999. Are you sure it was "King Lear"? I did not see it listed at all. He was in Hamlet way back playing Claudius.

Thing like what happened to you in the club happen to me all the time. Except they are usually standing beside me and i'm completely oblivious until the walk away and someone says it to me. Has happened to me a few time now.:blush:

as for my parents, they'r probably be around your age but older if you get me. you were in college in the 70's and my parents got married in the 60's. my eldest sister is in her 40's.

you might be able to get that movie in one of those vintage movie/ record shops or if amazon have an italian address.

ok went in to the site myself and looked it up.
hes played titus in titus andronicus, othello in othello and claudius in hamlet but no sign of king lear.

I know that Hopkins also played in Hamlet, Othello, and Titus, but what I'm looking for is definitely Lear, as the clips I've seen were in a documentary I watched in English class comparing Lear and Oedipus Rex (both of which we studied). The clips were, in fact, him in rehearsal for the play, not the production itself, so I don't know for sure if a recording of the play is actaully in existance. I certainly hope so. I also know that he did play Lear because it is named in his list of accomplishmenst in a bonus feature on the dvd for the movie Hannibal (sorry, I'm a movie geek as well teehee). Actaully, watching that movie last night and seeing this thread today reminded me of it. I will definitely keep looking. Thank you for your help, Janine, and yours as well, Niamh.

Wait, that is a beginning. Does it say what year it was in the extras on the DVD? Perhaps it is a BBC recording of the play and he did the play "live" onstage some time in his career. This might just be some excerpts. I hope you find the film. Try the BBC site. That might lead you to it.

AH HA!! I never thought hat maybe the dvd mentioned a date. I'll have to go through it again. Yes, it was on stage. I hope there was someone smart enough to film it. I'll let you know how this all pans out. Heehee I'm all excited now. :D

Ok, I just went to google.com and put in Anthony Hopkins King Lear and a ton of sites come up all about him doing Lear onstage. I think they said 1988 - somewheres around there. If you read these various sites, and the second is an interview with the man himself, it should shed a lot of light on the subject. He must have played Lear onstage in London.

If you like Shakespeare adaptations I'd definitely recommend Throne of Blood (Macbeth) and Ran (King Lear) both by Akira Kurosawa.

I recently watched "300". I give it a 5 out of 5 (i'm not one to rate a movie so highly either).

Mark F, I did see "Ran" - that is the Japanese version, right? I thought it was interesting and wonderfully intense. Sets were amazing, but still I like and understand the English version better with Olivier. I have not seen any other versions. Interesting - I did not know Kurosawa, who I think to be one of the great directors of his time, did "Throne of Blood" (Macbeth). I saw a documentary film about him and it was wonderful. They probably mentioned it but I have not seen it. I would like to. He was truly gifted.


I stand corrected on another film I mentioned to Niamh - "Black Narciscus". I think it starred Deborah Kerr, not Ingrid Bergman. Watching so many films lately, I tend to mix up actors....sorry.
