What is the last movie you saw? and rate it.

"Drawing Restraint 9"

This is probably the strangest movie I've ever seen. It's pretty long, but one sort of gets lost in it, so the time passes a bit differently. The director, Matthew Barney, takes absolutely no trouble with his pacing; seriously, things that would take all of a second or two among more common films take upwards of a full minute or two. Unhurried, to say the least. The main characters are him and his wife - musician Bjork - as themselves. They're on this whaling ship, participating in a rather bizarre wedding ritual. All the while there is this large tub of vaseline (called "the field") freezing on the deck -which means something, apparently. Anyway, the stuff seeps into their cabin, they develop blowholes, chop each others legs off, and turn into whales. Fun, huh? Additionally, there appears to be rather a vast amount of religious symbolism in it that totally slipped past me.

As a side note, I have to say this film has given rise to some of the most amusing message-board discussions I've ever encountered at Imdb: among the more memorable titles are "most pretentious installment of Free Willy to date" and "THIS crap...is why I dropped out of film school." :lol:

I do not understand enough of this film yet to rate it. Nice-looking, though. And the music (all by Bjork) is pretty interesting.

Glad you like independent films. I know what you mean about others not enjoying them like you or your friends making fun of you about them. Well, I would not do so, since I like some really funky films - offbeat type such as "Harold and Maude", "Benny and Joon", "Raising Arizona", well the list goes on and on....of course that is just the black comedy ones. I really like so many films I can't recall to mind all their names offhand - some are much newer ones. I loved this one film that has subtitles, I think Polish. It was called "Edges of the Lord". I would highly recommend it. The child actor is visionary and incredible to watch. I forget his name now. I also liked "Zellery" - think that might be set in Austria, not sure. There is a similar story set in Africa about a family uprooted during the war forced to live roughly in Africa. Can't recall the name now. It is a fine film. I don't know as much as you about the directors of the foreign films. I am American, but so glad my library has many foreign films available. I have taken advantage of that fact. I want to broaden my horizons. Don't mind what your friends say or if they laugh at you. You know what is really good quality viewing. That is all that counts.

I saw "Bourne Supremacy" about a year ago. I think I saw the sequel, too. I liked it very much. It kept ones interest and I think that Matt Damon is a fine young actor. It was good as a "thriller and edge-of-your-seat" film as you described it. I never lost interest and would watch it again later on.

So funny - "you ol' folks" - yes, Asa, you are really trying to get on my good side, I can see. So your goal was to make me "defensive" and annoyed. Anyway, at this point who cares - you like the film, I do not. I just thought it quite over-rated and I still do. I still cannot see how it is such an original script. I have seen a number of independent films with the same scenario, asside from the broken gear shift, - taking a cross-country trip with a disfunctional family. I can't think off hand what one of the films was called, but it actually was quite good and made me laugh - a black comedy, as well. It may have been I was comparing the two films. You may not have seen the other. They also went in a small rundown minibus. "Vacation" also had the dead relative scenerio, only this time she was strapped to the hood of the car going across a desert.

Last night I watched "The Green Mile".
Everyone kept saying "you never saw that before?"
I really liked it a lot. It had a much deeper broader theme, than what meets the eye. It takes time to sink in. It stayed with me and I thought about the film long after viewing. I think it was probably the best film based on a Stephen King novel I have ever seen. I am not a big King fan, but I really did like this film. The performances were incredible - every role, starring and supporting. I would highly recommend it, but not for the weak-hearted. Some scenes were not easy to watch. I would probably rate it a 10/10, but as I have said prior, I hate rating systems.

Hi higley, I saw the Illusionist a couple of weeks ago. I liked it, but felt some bit of disappointment about it. I can not clearly put my finger on just what it was specifically, as yet. I thought the art direction and the cinematography of interest, also. It was different with the sepia tones and the brown pallet, but after awhile I started to get tired of the dullness of it and needed some color. That might just be my view. I may have to watch it again since a friend has pointed out some things I think I missed. It was good but not great I thought.

Oops forgot you, Themis, I like Richard E. Grant, so I will have to check out this film. I also like Gabriel Bryne. It sounds interesting. Grant is in an offbeat little movie called "A Merry War" about an author breaking away from his routine life. It is from a George Orwell novel "Keep The Aspidistra Flying". It is quite amusing.

Niamh, Truly amazing. I had been putting off watching it for years now, knowing there were difficult scenes to view. I kept thinking it would be so disturbing. It is but you can take it and I liked the ending very much so. Every character is interesting - good and bad - and it is quite an original screenplay and story. Yes, I would highly recommend it. It has a lot of meaning and you will think on it long after viewing it.

"Cars" -- a little hyper, but I can imagine elementary kids wanting to stay put for another showing of it.

Asa, when I wrote that I was just kidding you. I really laughed when you called Virgil and I "you ol' folks". We kid about that already. I am older than Virgil, and I really was not sensitive about it. I am sure I will have the same debate with my friend offline about the film. We never much agree on films, but still we are the best of friends. Of course - no hard feelings and fire away. I can take the "ordeal" as you put it. ;) Makes life interesting.

Ok, everyone, This is the latest movie I watched,
"The Miracle Worker".
Wow, what an intense experience. This film is amazing and such incredible performances by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke (as a child). I had seen it years ago but hardly recalled much about it, so it was totally enthralling. I liked the struggle between Anne, the teacher and the parents who had indulged and spoiled Helen. If you don't know this film it is based on truth and about the incredible blind-deaf Helen Keller and her likewise incredible and persistent teacher. Everyone has to see this film once. It is so touching and relays so much meaning. "Communication" and "words" are the key to open up our worlds and free our souls. How better than we on this site to know this to be true. I would rate this film 10/10 absolutely. It is a true classic!
