Watching "On the Waterfront". Great film - saw it years ago. Fun to revisit these old films. Probably a 10/10 for this one.
Just finished watching "On the Waterfront" - they don't make movies like this anymore. Really something. I had forgotten how gripping it was with such fine performances. Black and white had something fine going for it. Definitely a 10 out of 10 in the old movie genre. Interesting to pick out the stars in this film that were just starting out. Brando and Eva Saint Marie were great together. Karl Maldon was amazing and Lee Cobb such a good villianous character. Rod Steiger I could hardly recognise him was quite good. I noticed "Herman Munster" in a minor mob role...how funny. He was really young, you could tell.
Sky High w/Kurt Russell. If you've got a kid inside you, you will like this. Ala "Spy Kids." Yea, its goofy and corny, but its got some spoofs and funny moments.
Manolia - Yes, I had forgotten just how good that film was - the performances were great. Yes, very true and oddly enough I was just quoting that line to my sister. A few weeks back I watched Brando in "Streetcar Named Desire". I was really impressed. I had to age to appreciate the fine performances in that film. I think both films were by the same director, weren't they... Elia Kazan? not sure I spelled his name correctly. "Streetcar" had some intense performances. "On the Waterfront" was tense and suspenseful at times. Something to be said for those old black and white classic films. I love them!
Borat - 1/10. it made me sick. I am all for potty humor but this film nauseated me. I guess I wasn't in the mood.
To the movie fanatics out there: The film called "Pan's Labarynth" (spelling) is the most stunning mixture of fatasy and reality ever witnessed by this viewer. Lot's of people have trouble with subtitles but this one will make you want to learn classical Spanish. Amazing. RJS
I just saw "Little Miss Sunshine" and wonder what all the hype was about. It was a total insult to my intelligence! I don't know why I bothered - really lame and nothing at all new, in my opinion. It did not even make me laugh and I thought all the characters were sad and pathetic. The foul language was not funny and further marred the film. A total waste of time. Ashame the cute little girl does not get better roles. She is rather good, but I would not rave.
quasimodo1 - I have heard wonderful things about "Pans Labarynth". I will have to check it out sometime. I don't mind reading subtitles if the film is that good and stunning to watch.
Yes it is Elia Kazan the director of both. If you haven't already, do watch "America America" by Kazan also. It is a bit longer but it is definetely worth it. You will get a picturesque glimpse of the past..
Last film i watched "Frida". I don't know if i can rate it since it is a biographical movie and can one actually rate the life of another? But i definetely give a 10/10 to the music score! Excellent!
manolia,
I saw Frieda a few years back. I really liked it then and probably would give it another go round, my library owns it. I think that the acting was superb and I don't recall the score - so I must re-watch it. I have been trying to collect film scores recently; I really love them! It seemed like a well scripted and faithful rendition of the actual true story, but then again I don't know that much concerning the history of South America. I am an artist so it appealed to me from that standpoint. I think it deserves a 10/10, too. I don't really like rating films by numbers because there are so many genres and so many categories how can one rate them really?
Thanks for the advice - I will check out "America America". It sounds interesting. I don't mind slowpaced films that are thoughful and long, if quality is behind them.
I made the dire mistake of watching "Little Miss Sunshine" last night. I must be missing something, since I hated the film. I almost turned it off midway through which is so unlike me...I usually suffer to the end and give it one change,at least. I thought it a big nothing and the script poor. I was sorry I wasted my time. It was not funny or deep. It was a bunch of disfunctional obnoxious people, asside from the child, acting foolishly and getting on everyone's nerves. That is entertainment? Critics and Hollywood were ravingabout it; I certainly can't see why. Are they kidding? Alan Arkan did not deserve an award for his lousy, crude performance and half way through the film he dies anyway. He hardly acts at all. I can't figure out how Hollywood comes up with these poor choices. There are tons of way better films out there. This film seemed trite and had no humor in my estimate. The ending is disgusting with the pagent children caked with makeup and showing off their young bodies. Horrific film!
I had to redemn my film viewing, afterwards I watched Pat O'Connor's fine film "A Month in the Country". It stars a very young Colin Firth and Kenneth Branagh as WWI vets trying to cope with their ghosts.Colin's character comesto an English church to restore a mural. Branagh is looking for the remains of an ancient leader or knight. It is quite interesting but slowpaced and very thoughtful. I like O'Connors films. I have the book and started reading it last night. I heard it was a very good read. I have seen the film several times now and still I enjoy it. Now that is a good film and makes one think.
That's the new thing for me too lately. I am very proud of my last acquisition. It is a "best of" of Vangelis Papathanassiou. He is a greek composer who wrote music for the movies "blade runner", "chariots of fire", "1492", "bitter moon" and many others. He composes electronic music mostly (not my favorite genre) but his work i think is very nice. You could try him.
I have not seen that one yet. But you seem a person with good taste so..i take that review seriously in mind.
Haven't seen that too but i have heard it mentioned before. Besides i like both Firth and Branagh (who doesn't?). Thanx!
I saw a martial arts type movie last night. Think it was the first one i've ever seen It was called Ong Bak. I have to admit that even though the story was ok i really injoyed it! there is this really cool chase scene involving those little taxi car thingys they have in thiland.
The last time I was in the movie house: The Banquet
I'd rate it as a verry goood movie, because the disturbing bit was there's a subtitle. instead of enjoying the scenes altogether, I have to read the one below first before anything else,
