How can you live with two dogs and a cat if you've got horrible allergies? :confused5: I feel awful if I hug a dog-owner, not to mention spendig fifteen minutes in a house with ONE dog... Cat's aren't really any better than that, and both of them at the same time I don't even want to think about :D
You really must need a great vacuume cleaner and use it a lot...
If you guys recall I had a vacuum crisis a while back. I went back to a bagged vacuum (upright) and I love it!! It'll suck the paint off the walls if I chose to do so.
I've been eating antihistamin daily for a long time now and occasionally taking even the real strong ones that are supposed to help me sleep, and STILL the pollen is getting to me! I love spring, but I hate the pollen allergy. And all those dogs that are shedding their fur on the stairway of this block of flats... It makes climbing those stairs an ordeal :D
 I have better times of year than this. My biggest issues are with trees, so Spring time can be an exercise in misery. This year will be really bad I'm afraid. Spring has come very early it seems, and that means that my typical one month of swollen eyes will be two or three :( I would love to say I have a miracle cure to get rid of them, but I'm afraid that I just grin and bear it with the help of antihistamines. They at least bring things to a manageable level.
Antihistamines are very useful I got a random flare of rash after being in the sea. just half way up my legs bright red, if thats not sexy I dunno what is! My fiance has the most annoying allergy, hes allergic to crisps (chips if you're american) so I can never eat them!
I could imagine being allergic to crisps!
Haha - he can eat proper chips, like... mcdonalds chips, its the way they pack a packet for crisps... we've discovered that, Tortilla chips are ok, just not potato ones :S
Allergies suck. Because of them I'm currently on a grain-free diet.
No bread, no pasta, no oatmeal, no cake, no cookies, no pizza, not much anything! There's wheat even in chicken nuggets, meatballs and some sausages. I mean - what the heck am I supposed to eat?
I hate rice cakes, and those are pretty much the only thing I can eat for breakfast and snack nowadays...
I have IBS and the amount of foods i cant eat is depressing. However that wonderful boyfriend of mine has promised to help encourage me to eat properly according to my diet when he comes over and is even going to eat according to it too! Its the only way i wont be tempted to eat all the yummy stuff i'm not ment to and suffer because of!
Anna - Can you eat popcorn? That's always a good snack.
Food allergies are miserable because they just don't ever end. My daughter is allergic to dairy, and you never notice how much you use it until you are trying to substitute in soy milk and cheese for everything. Ever try to make pudding with soy milk? It doesn't work out so well :)
Poor you - but lucky you too! Such encouraging people around you will surely make sticking to your diet much much easier
I can eat pop corn, but don't like it that much. And it's hardly a way to substitute proper breakfast...
I've now started to eat boiled eggs for snacks, but I can only eat about two per day or I'll get slightly nauseous... Don't know why, according to the tests I'm not allergic to eggs.
But really, a grain-free diet when one is also allergic to most fruit, vegetable and nuts and doesn't tolerate much spices either sure makes life complicated. And having to double check the ingredients list for every single product before purchasing when you go to grocery shopping gets really tiresome. Though after a while you find those few things you can still eat and it gets easier.
Also I've noticed that rice-based products don't keep hunger away that well, I'm constantly hungry nowadays.
Any good ideas how to keep ones thoughts from straying to all the forbidden yummy food?
I'm sorry, that just sounds terrible to me. I love food, and I can't imagine having to give all of that up. I'll think and see if I have any recipes that fit all of that...
Niamh: What kind of diet are you on because of IBS? And is it a permanent thing?
Mkhockenberry: Aww, that's very sweet of you :)
Its a diet mainly based on soluble fibre, no red meats and no greasy foods. Eat the foods that are high in solube fibre first to line the tummy and prevent trigger foods liek red meats, greasy food, citrus or high insoluble fibre causing cramps and spasism. Its a balance i've been very bad at keeping since in moved last june.
No red meat sounds bad, one of the few things I can still eat an enjoy!
I guess with time one gets used to not eating all the good things. I'm already finding this diet a bit easier, even if I'm still almost constantly hungry :p Really, if I for some reason had to diet for losing weight, I don't know what I'd do, as this diet is already hard enough with that kind of aspect considered  (Don't understand why I'm not losing any weight despite being constantly hungry, by the way. I guess it's just another way my life laughs at my misery :p)
I also have IBS. I stopped eating red meat; but then I was tired all the time. I finally gave into really lean meats slowly, only such as filet mignon (I know it's expensive) and lean sirlon burger occasionally. I can't eat anything fried or fatty either, such as prime rib; I actually will vomit if I eat that. I also try to stay away from what I call harsh fiber. I have found I can tolerate oats better than than wheat even though I have been tested for wheat allergies and celiac's disease. I can hardly eat vegatables anymore - don't get me near a bean. I can basically eat these cooked or raw - spinach, aspargus, carrots, potatoes. My diet gets pretty boring. I try to spice things up, without using spice at all, but rather fresh grown or dried herbs. I can't eat onions either or immediately I am having severe stomach cramps. I can actually eat a small piece of raw but cooked for me is deadly. I can no longer eat salad, unless I have raw vegatables and a little raw spinach - forget lettuce. Recently, I am also trying to cut out anything at all processed - I sometimes will eat a Stouffers frozen meal but I think the additives can't really be good for one and those are loaded with sodium as well.
I also eat yogart everyday and take a few acidophilis tablets. Not really sure if those work that well. My IBS dr gave me a sample of something with probotics he claims does work much better but it's $40. dollars a month, so forget about me buying that.
Niamh, a few questions; what do you consider to be the soluable fiber? I have read online some about it but don't know that much. I always want to learn more and get tips that will help.
I think some of the diet is individual and what you find bothers you or triggers your symptoms. I have had this for a long time so I had time to test various foods before I came to the conclusion of what works for me and what doesn't. I am far from well on that score but I have other ailments adding to the mix in the same area - abdominal; so that complicates the matter. I am on a low acid diet for that condition but I didn't really know that would help IBS as well.
Hello in here.:smile5:
There are these awesome pudding cups at Kroger - zen soy. They're good. Pricey though. Is she allerg? Is she lactose intolerant? That's one of my issues. I do not recommend the Amy's Soy Cheese Pizza. Something in that Pizza makes me one miserable person. I don't know why.
I have to take a probiotic. It's called Align. It helps. Problem is I forget to take it and it's one of those things you're supposed to do on a regular basis...
But when I take it like I am supposed to, I feel better. Normal to some degree.
She's actually full blown allergic to it as I found when I tried her on the lactose free milk. She'll start having respiratory symptoms like nasal allergies if she gets too much. I try to still allow her to have a little since I'm hoping exposure will eventually win out, but I can only let her have 2-3 servings a week if I don't want to worry about her breathing at night :( I normally save it for things she would otherwise miss out on like real ice cream :D
Soya Kaas cheese (Mozzarella) isn't bad. I like that it melts really well which a lot of them don't. The only issue I have is that the other varieties don't taste much like what they say they are. The mozzarella is pretty close. I also try to find things made with coconut milk. She seems to prefer the taste, but since most of the non dairy foods out there are for adults choosing not to eat dairy everything is lacking in sweetness for her. She likes yogurt, but the non dairy kind is just too sour.
I've jokingly told my mom that I will start a business one day selling foods specifically for kids with food allergies  The market is sorely lacking in that area, and while it is a small population you can almost guarantee repeat business if the product is good ;) Now all I need is start up capital
Heres a list of soluble fibre foods. :) Infact that intire website is my IBS bible. Its fantastic! I have the prebiotic acacia with is brilliant.

Here's one that you might do well for you. I've made it a number of times, and it's tasty.

Ladies,
Sorry for the interruption, but I need some fashion advice from you.
So, what do you think of a jeans & sport coat (no tie) look? Something similar to what's depicted here:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rE4SDGCxsj...st+dressed.jpg
And, if time or temperament allow, these follow up questions: (1) how "formal" is this set up? Is this a "wear to work" get up? After hours? Date night?
Gracias
Date night or casual wear to work. That look would suit you me thinks!
Whats the occasion?
It looks like a perfect look for work to me as long as you're in a casual office or something similar. To go out, swap the button down for a graphic tee and you'll look great :)
Hey, thanks for the welcomes.:smile5:
I dunno much about fashion, but I think that looks nice, but not 'too nice', still pretty casual.
ShalotThat's the one - Align. I don't know how expensive it is where you live; but it's rather expensive here. But you say it really works? I wish my dr would offer me more samples.
Thanks Niamh for that site. I will check it out now. I hope I find something to help me. It's so complicated; because I have the chronic bladder disease too (non bacterial condition) and the past year I have had recurring infections, as well. Some days I don't know where the pain is coming from. Anything which will help me is appreciated.
Align works for me. I did try a Philips brand Probiotic that so did not work AT ALL. I couldn't leave the house that day if you know what I'm saying...
So far, it's the only thing that has worked and this thing is so annoying that I will pay for it - it's about $30 - $35 per month around here. I could think of ways I'd rather spend that money but I also like feeling normal.
Thanks, Shalot. Thats good to know. Problem for me with spending the additional money on this suppliment is that I buy other suppliments I need for my chronic bladder condition and also this year the Medicare heath insurance plan is horrid - several of my drugs are no longer covered and therefore they are costing me plenty....over a dollar per pill. I am talking of pills I need 2 and even 6 times a day (one is half the strenght over the counter than the generic prescription drug). It's getting harder to make ends meet but I will definitely consider trying the Align since you gave it such a favorable report.
Niamh, the list of allowable soluble fiber foods is nearly all the things I can eat, too. Thanks for posting that; it backed up my own theories on what I could safely eat. I think I had seen that website before, ages ago and took note of which were soluable but oddly enough, mostly I have gone by trial and error. I just get so bored with my diet. I can eat some meat now such as very lean filet mignon; but mostly I have to keep it to a minimum. I get a little tired of chicken. I like fish, but it's so hard here to get it fresh. Is that they case there also in Ireland? Just curious.
I discovered the wonder that is Ikea today!!
Ri-i-i-ght - so what have you bought? Come on - time to 'fess all.
