man I missed that one too, how could I! a song I grew up with!
shout it out loud by kiss
my dad used to say he wouldn't go see them if they were playing across the street!
Loving you
Isn't the right thing to do
How can I
Ever change things that I feel
If I could
Maybe I'd give you my world
How can I
When you won't take it from me

"Go Your Own Way" - Fleetwood Mac
"Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space"
-
stumped me there, but the internet is telling me its the windmills of your mind...by Barbara Streisand, or dusty springfield, or petula clark, or sting even and bunches of others! and its also in the thornbirds (did not see it) by Georgio Parreira...
Hey kids, shake it loose together
The spotlight's hittin' something
That's been known to change the weather
We'll kill the fatted calf tonight
So stick around
You're gonna hear electric music
Solid walls of sound

Bennie and the Jets! - Elton John
Now all the trials and tribulations
Of the world don't mean a thing;
Above the clouds
I'll fly away--
Was it my imagination,
Did the stars come out to play?
-
bennie and the jets might be the all time best cruisin' tune!
Eric Woolfson's Immortal, had to look at that up...one place suggested it was a song that can describe Shakespeare's life even though apparently the song was written about edgar allen poe...?
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone
These wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me

Eric Woolfson and the Alan Parson's project were big fans of Poe and they did quite a few of their songs influenced by him, including the album Tales of Mystery and Imagination, there are adaptations of The Raven, The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Gold Bug and others...
I didn't get the reference to Shakespeare - what was it?
I sort of take this one to be a bit of an adaptation of Edgar Poe's famous "A Dream Within a Dream," sort of making it Eric's own..
I actually just discovered this song, so I haven't made up my mind about it. I love the lyrics, but I've only listened to it once. I'm really a fan of quite a few of Woolfson's works such as "Freudiana," "I Am a Mirror," "Little Hans," "It's Funny You Should Say That," and of course, his work with Alan Parson's Project.
-
I got the Shakespeare reference just from someone on yahoo questions who was talking about the song in general. the poster didn't illustrate specifically how they were connected.
I think that's pretty neat when literary culture influences musical culture...if I knew more of poe, id be all the more interested in listening to those groups' music. or alternatively, if I knew more of their music, I might want to read more poe. and now maybe I will...
I recently learned that one of my favorite songs by Florence the machine (what the water gave me) was inspired by the lead singer's knowledge of Virginia woolf's suicide and a visit to her gardens.

"My Immortal" - EVANESCENCE (One of the wife's favorite groups)
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
-
oh boy I got one!
stairway to heaven by led zeppelin.
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me
For I must be travelin' on now
There's too many places I got to see
-
Freebird! Lynyrd Skynyrd. A favorite of my own, there.
Every night seems, dinner and wine
Saturdays, girls
I was never in love, never had the time
In my hustle and hurried world
Laughing my self to sleep, waking up lonely
I needed someone to hold me, oh
-
Every Woman in the World- Air Supply
She struts into the room
Well I don't know her
But with a magnifying glance
I just sort of looked her over, hmm
We have a drink or two
Well, maybe three
And then suddenly she starts telling me
Her life story
-
well the internet tells me its be my lover by alice cooper and I used to have his greatest hits album when I was a kid and I wonder if that was on it? hmmm
She was sittin' all alone over on the tailgate
Tan legs swingin' by a Georgia plate
I was lookin' for her boyfriend
Thinkin', no way she ain't got one
Soon as I sat down I was fallin' in love
Tryin' to pour a little sugar in her Dixie cup
Talkin' over the speakers in the back of that truck
She jumped up and cut me off

Play It Again - Luke Bryan
"I don't like to hear you cry.
You just don't know
How deep that cuts me.
So I will cover up my eyes
And it will go away.
You've only lived a minute of your life
I must be dreaming,
Please stop screaming."
-
had to look that one up and the internet tells me its steven by alice cooper. one yahoo search result was titled "the most sinister and creepy lyrics to a song..." ---I think I never heard of that one so im obliged to give a challenging one in return!
Sors salutis
et virtutis
michi nunc contraria
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.

Looking it up, Bing says it's O Fortuna by Carl Orff. Nor speaking the language, I have never heard it.
"Silent stars blinking in the blackness of an endless sky
Cold silver satellites, ghostly caravans passing by
Galaxies unfolding, new worlds being born
Pilgrims and prodigals creeping toward the dawn"
