Knowing a lot about one subject -- or -- knowing fair amounts about many subjects?
Depends on what subjects. As a general rule, I like to have a general background in many subjects but specialise in one...(e.g. music :D) but if I had to choose, knowing a lot about one subject.

horses. 1. less of a threat. 2. useful. 3. easier on household pets.

Pain, but it depends on the kind, seeming slightly more tolerable.
