"Jane Eyre" (Franco Zeffirelli version)
10/10.
Although I still prefer Ciaran Hints as Mr.Rochester, William Hurt was a pleasant surprise.

I love that version of Jane Eyre!
Pan was great, have you seen The Devil's Backbone, also by Del Toro? It's not quite as good but it's the first part of the trilogy and deals with the same themes. Cronos, his first film also mixes fantasy and childhood in much the same way. A film that probably influenced him a lot is Spirit of the Beehive which is a masterpiece by Victor Erice, it may not be easy to find, I got lucky as there was a rerun in a small theater in Paris. Check it out, it's great.
Oceans Thirteen - ust the movie I was looking for a non-thinking purely entertaining movie.
8/10
My Bestfriend's Girlfriend - (a local movie)
On a normal movie-watching day, I would not dare go into the theatre and watch a soppy local love story because...it's just that...soppy. But this was exempted because I watched it with my bestfriend! (That's saying something because I haven't had a bestie for many years.) We watched it and enjoyed...critiquing it! Hahaha! Some lines jump and they would not make sense anymore. But the lead actor was handsome...and we swooned..very unlikely!
Juno - 7/10.
Didn't like the plot much.
Atonement
8/10 - beautiful cinematography and Saoirse Ronan was hauntingly good
manolia, I saw "Pan's Labyrinth" also awhile back, so we must talk about it. I agree that I like the historical context best of all asside from the fantasy parts. I found the acting to be first rate and quite intense. The ending was something, wasn't it? It is a darker film than I had first anticipated. I would also like to see "Devil's Backbone"...I had heard about that; that it is quite good.
amalia and Niamh, I also prefer the newer version of Jane Eyre with Ciaran Hinds, but I am a long time fan of William Hurt, so I enjoy this other version as well. Who does not enjoy looking at a young Hurt for a few hours time? I have seen it several times now, since my library owns it. I own the Ciaran Hinds version. Another amazing version, which is more like a play, but impecably acted and intense is the one with Timothy Daulton. It is a longer version and very well done, by the BBC.
Hey, Papayahed, sometimes we want to be purely and mindlessly entertained. I have enjoyed those 'Ocean 11, 12, 13' films. I go by mood and sometimes those faster-paced films fill the bill. I also enjoyed the 'Bourne' films.
Hi Laindessiel - long time no see. How are you?
That is fun - going to a theater with a friend and sharing a film. I really miss doing this. It has been a time now since I have done that. My son and I used to go to films often also, when he was in his early teens; he has always been a big movie buff. In fact, he took me to see "The Lord of the Rings" - the first one. He was determined we should view it together, since I gave him my books to read, when he was a kid. It is a nice memory, as will be going to the films with your new best friend.
Pensive - what is "Juno" about?
Cailin, I can't wait to see "Atonement". I heard it is really good. The cinematograpy did look beautiful.
Last night I watched the second half of Kenneth Branagh's full-length "Hamlet" (had to watch the first half on my birthday:) ); I also followed up with the extras - like making of the film and background on Hamlets. I love this film and have seen it now several times, since I acquired the DVD version; it looked great on my new HD TV - God bless Ken for shooting in 70 ml! Truly a stunning film and the time period I feel works very well with the story to add vibrancy and dimension to the character of Hamlet. Excellent and I applaud Ken Branagh for having the nerve to produce a full-length version of the play on film.
I went to the theater to see this. I was late when I arrived. It was a very sunny day that day, and the film and theater were SO DARK that I couldn't see where I should sit when I went inside the theater! I had NO idea whether someone was sitting in a seat or not. It actually was a very unpleasant experience. I never knew if I was going to bump into someone or actually sit on them! :D
I really liked it. I know I have seen probably every version of "Jane Eyre" available to see. I watched one from the early 1930's with Colin Clive (of Dr. Frankenstein - "It's Alive" - fame). That was kind of bad. It was about an hour long and it really cut so much of the story out. The worst version.
Now, I liked both the Ciaran Hinds and William Hurt versions. I love William Hurt. He's just classic. :p But as for the film itself, I would take the Ciaran Hinds version. I am not taking anything away from the William Hurt version, though. Heaven knows I watch it every time it is on TV! :)
I was just about to mention this one. Out of all the adaptations. This one is my favorite. It seems to be the most faithful. I suppose the length of it helps with that fact. I think the length also helps with the fact that I enjoyed this one more. Also, I still prefer Timothy Dalton's Rochester over everyone else's. Just like Hinds as Wentworth, others may play the role very well, but Dalton is the only Rochester for me. :)
I have heard of "Devil's Backbone" now i may have to check it out ;)
Didn't know it was a part of a trilogy. Never heard of Cronos, though.
The spirit of the beehive is on my list too ;) (along with a few hundrent films  Actually my film list is way more extensive than my book list).
I haven't really looked for the film here..There is a dvd rental place where you can find almost everything, here (there are lots of artists living in that specific neighbourhood so this place has managed to provide the high demand of not so popular films, so i may be lucky;) ).
Hmmm...i didn't particularly like the ending you know, but to be honest, i can't think of a more suitable ending ;) We can discuss the film any time you like :)
Last film i watched:
"Los olvidados" by Luis Bunuel 9/10. This film is great and reminded me of Pasolini's "Acattone" (so Mark, you must check it out if you haven't already).
And just because one can't get enough of Bunuel i watched (for the 3rd time) "The exterminating angel" which is a 10/10 and one of my all time favourite films.
Manolia, that's a coincidence!Last night I watched "Tristana" by Bunuel. 9/10.
Yeah "Tristana" :D
"Viridiana" is far better for me. If you haven't, do watch it :)
Now that you mention the plot, Pensive, I did see previews of that the other day - a trailer on another DVD. At the time I truly thought that film looked dumb. I can't fully judge by the trailer, but I did not have a burning desire to see it, after seeing that trailer.
Went to see No Country For Old Men last night. Completely freaked me out... Can't figure out whether I liked it or not
Saw the accidental Husband with my sister on Friday. was actually quite funny.
Across the Universe! 10/10
A must see for any Beatles fan.
Children of Men, simply amazing.
I have seen the movie Alvin and the chipmonks...pretty cute.. :)
I think it was a hit or miss with the songs, bur it's worth a watch. I was never a fan of I am the Walrus before the film, but it is now in regualr rotation on my Ipod.
Being for the Benifit of Mr. Kite is one of my favorite Beatles songs, so I was annoyed at the films cover ... it was funny though, that I'll admit and visuals were great.
Just watched As you like it. Brilliant! I think out of all the Branagh ones that i've seen, its the best one so far. 10/10

The Invasion
7/10
It was a lot like Invasion of the Body Snatchers. A crashed space shuttle brings an alien "virus" to earth, and those who are infected become connected, yet emotionless. Nicole Kidman was entertaining, and she is gorgeous, but that wasn't enough to overcome the unoriginality of the story. But I guess every generation needs an alien invasion story.
weekend rentals:
Adaptation 4.0/4.0 - My favorite so far as to Malkovich and Etarnal Sunshine
Bridget Jones's Diary 2.5/4.0 - A movie that would be a disaster if not for Zellweger
Divorce - Italian Style 3.5/4.0 - A hilarious Mastroianni
Eraserhead 4.0/4.0 - Am I required to say anything about this?
Seduced and Abandoned 4.0/4.0 - Just brilliant
"The Third Man" by Orson Welles
10/10
The great discussion in the "Citizen Cane" thread reminded me how much I love this film.
The Third Man was officially directed by Carol Reed. Great film though, and Welles' entrance is one of the best ever.
The Name of The Rose 7/10. Book is millions times better. Didnt like the rewrites they did...Benno wasnt even in it and he's constant through out the book!
Beouwolf...Ehh at this point I think it could have been better,it was not what I thought it would be.
"Third Man" and "Citizen Kane" are excellent films. I also like Orson Well's version of MacBeth - it is truly dark and sinister. Another totally interesting thriller type Well's film is called "The Stranger". It has some truly stellar moments in that film and keeps one on the edge of the seat.
Last night I watched:
Sophie's Choice
What an excellent film and a fine, fine performance by Meryl Streep - she won the Academy Award that year for this performance and it was well deserved. Here role was so multilayered and touching. As you see her character, a Polish woman, who survived the imprisonment in the worst of the Nazi concentration camps, unravel the layers in her past, you can't help but be gripped, by the things this woman has endured. It is truly heartbreaking, one scene in particular, which I can't reveal or it would be a spoiler to the film. This film so remarkably shows the results of the horrors that were inflicted on individuals, who had survived and how they felt the deepest of guilt, for their own survival, after coming back into society or trying to be a part of society and the living. After watching this film, I think anyone would say to themselves, 'what do I really have to complain about in my own daily life, compared to what atroscities this woman/children/men experienced in those camps; even later when they were haunted by their nightmares?'
Playing opposite Streep is Kevin Kline, who is very convincing as her all-consuming lover, Nathan. Observing and befriending the couple is the would-be young and innocent writer, Slingo, who is actually, the one telliing the story, which becomes a complex triangle of sorts, as the story unfolds. Slingo is played by Peter MacNicol and does an admirable and sensitive portrayal of the young man, caught between these two volitile forces. Very well nuanced performances and a startling, yet meaningful ending make this film very worthy of viewing. I would give this film a 10/10, if not entirely on performance. The filming felt a little outdated, but the film otherwise, was wonderfully portrayed and I believe, it follows close to the book it was based on. I saw part of the extras -the documentary, which is well worth taking the time to watch. The author had some very interesting things to comment on in this part. It made one want to read the novel.
I highly recommend this film if you have not seen it before.
the Atonement!
i liked ot a lot. Even wanted to read the book it was based on.
Has anyone watched it? what do you think about it?
The Shawshank Redemption
I got caught by this film late one night.. it was 23:00 hrs or so. I was preparing for bed and I thought I'd turn on the TV for a quick browse through the TV channels.. and guess what. I saw this film, with a calm 1950's air and thought I'd check it out. It turned out to be a great movie. The film is about a banker that finds his wife cheating and somehow she and her lover get killed during a night; he gets blamed for all that and imprisoned. In prison he encounters Morgan Freeman, as the 2nd main character and there he tries to cope with his sentence. I so adored this film..
MidniteHowl, This is a great film! Glad you caught it on TV. I watched it years ago, but just this year I picked it up for my sister and gave it to her for Christmas. She simply adores this film. The performances can't be topped. Morgan Freeman is always good, he is one of my favorites, and Tim Robbins gave a truly fine performance - he was younger here which is interesting. This film really put his name out there, I believe. I think he also had something to do with the making of it - did he write the screenplay. Robbins is quite multitalented. I have to hand it to him. I will have to view this film again real soon, since I recall it was quite captivating. Even my mother liked it and she usually likes nothing unless it ends 'happily ever after.' Why was it so long? I guess if you add commercials on tv, then it would get pretty long indeed.
If you like this film, you should see "The Green Mile" - it is amazing, too. Another story about prison but takes place on death row. The book was written by Stephen King, and I am not a huge fan of his but I thought this was the best thing he ever wrote.
This is one of my all-time favorites. I have seen it SOOO MANY times now that I can actually recite the dialogue word-for-word! :p Truly fantasic film! From the very first time I saw the film (I think I was about 15-16 then), I thought it was one of the best movies that I'd ever seen in my life. It is so well-acted. Not only that, I think it has to be one of the most poetic films I'd ever seen. For me, just a great, great film!!! LOVE IT!!!!
Well, it was a "happyily ever after" of sorts. :) My grandmother kept using the phrase "Oh, I hope they "end up" together" when I made her watch it. :p :D
aaaaa
