Hi! Guys just signed on today. Looking for smart minds to discuss books and ideas with. Am reading Shadow of the Mind , Carlos Zafon. has anyone read it? What did you think?
welcome abirpal:) you'll definitly find smart minds around...
Welcome Ellen and Abirpal. Nice to have you here.
Welcome Ellen and Abir.
hello.
i actually just stumbled across this site tonight while doing a little research on one of my favorite books/stories of all time: The Phantom of the Opera. After looking for a little bit on the site, i decided to join.
so yeah...an introduction...
i'm sixteen going on seventeen in a few months, and a high school senior (go class of '07!). I'm most definately in love with books (my fave genre is fantasy) and consider myself a total bookworm.
a few of my passions...
1) reading. definately. i never understand it when people are all like, "ugh, i have to do reading for homework..." in a tone of disgust. It makes me sad! :bawling:
2) writing. oh man...you have no idea... one of my aspirations in life is to become published at least once. my favorite thing to write is Phantom of the Opera fanfiction and fanfiction in general (if you're into that sort of thing, feel free to look me up on www.fanfiction.net ;my penname is dark-hearted rose), but i do have a few originals in the works, and some average poetry as well.
3) music. i like to consider myself rather musically inclined...i might not be very good, but hey, it's there, hiding... anyway, i love listening and playing music (the good kind...:D ); it's a big part of my life. i play piano, violin, a little cello, a few guitar chords, and can get a noise out of a clarinet, and my voice is pretty good...not spectacular, or anything, but not hideous either.
so that's a little bit about me...can't wait to see what these forums have to offer!
Your Obedient Servant,
Lavender
HI all!
I stumbled across this forum when searching information about Irish authors for my contemporary Irish lit class. Even though I did not find the info I was looking for I liked what I saw and got stuck here for hours :D
I was in awe of this place and all of you like-minded, interesting, witty and intelligent people, so you gave me no choice but to join in...
So here comes a quick intro:
I'm Serafina, living in the far northern corner of Europe. I'm a grad student majoring in history, but I have also ventured the realms of literature, art history, political science, media studies and now film and television studies, my new passion.
I passionately love literature, although I haven't had time to read fiction for years. I'm just now starting again, trying to find my way through all these incredible classics. My favorite poet is W.H. Auden, although I'm so new to poetry I still find it pretty hard to read. I love Austen, Bronte sisters, Dickens, Hugo, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Greene, Wilde and Orwell, among others. These were just the first one that sprung to my mind... My fave contemporary is John Irving.
I'm also a movie buff with a stark passion for film noir and French new wave (and '50s melodramas as a quilty pleasure). Oh, and I simply couln't live without music. I listen to quite a wide range of music; pretty much anything from Lady Day to Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Smiths, Tom Waits to Death Cab for Cutie and Coldplay. Besides pop and blues I also listen to classical when I have the mood for it.
Ok, that's probably enough, will start exploring this awesome forum and stop bugging you guys for now :D:D :D
Welcome to all newbies!! You WILL enjoy LitNet, we promise you.
Lavender -- sounds like we have a great deal in common. It's nice to meet a fellow writer longing to be an author. I've got a little anecdote...
I was sitting in the library when a pair of secondary school students met at a table near mine. Their conversation ran along the stereotypical teenage fare, but somewhere in there, I heard "Ugh, I hate reading" in reference to school. In a library. The irony was palpable -- all I could do not to walk over and slap Oxford English on to the table.
Hi guys, welcome to the forum!
Lavender, I also visit fanfiction.net, mostly, to read Harry Potter fanfictions. Do you read/write them too?

Hi Serafina! I have read two poems of Auden and I really liked them a lot. Your favourite author's list seems really interesting too. Have fun around!Quote:
