We have a good Chekhov short story thread - you should come and check it out sometime. Also discussing another good story in the D.H.Lawrence SS thread. Do you like Chekhov or Lawrence? Otherwise I have not seen you in any of the book discussion groups. I am trying to get involved in "Dubliners" - it is the March read. Hope I see you soon in one of the discussion groups.

It's nice to be back among people with the love of the art of literature. I have not been among peers since I departed Grand View College in Des Moines, IA to scurry about the country some years ago. In all honesty I haven't "picked up a pen" in over a year and the lack of expression seems to take its toll. In school (English, emphasis on creative writing) I was most apt to succeed in persuasive essay, prose and any sort of stream of conciousness, also comedic short stories with a darker tune.
A bit of a Frostian but not a Hallmarkian, I am interested to browse this site for similar interests and perhaps strike dialogue.
My friends are not much for literature yet I'm not much for scotch on the rocks and pass me down woolen sweaters. Between nature and merry-making (which I define as drinking heavily with fellow heathens maintaining just enough responsibility to pay bills and stay out of jail, and various outdoor music festivals), I've decided to snatch the pen from where it lay, dust her off and begin again.

I just discovered this thread, a fact which sort of introduces me all by itself. In social settings, even virtual ones, I tend to lose my peripheral vision and miss a lot of what's going on around me. I lack the social sort of 'ept,' or whatever it is that you're missing when people say you're inept.

I'm old. I more than like reading. Might be a disorder. I used to read product labels and fine print when nothing else came to hand. The good part is that I read all kinds of stuff while still very young, and continue to read widely, although shallowly.

I also end up hacking about ninety percent out of my posts before I finally post them. My gift to you.

I am Bruce. From Brussels, at the moment, hence the nick. I am moving to France as we (I) speak, and I am also resident in Dar es Salaam for a part of the time.

I am currently reading Americans, for a change, as I realised that some of them can speak and write in English ;) . Never judge a country by it's leader, readers.

For poetry I am a huge fan of Frost, probably because of having to walk my dog in Brussels' forest every day (The woods are lovely, dark and deep). For books I am pretty much omnivorous, as one needs to be when book-shopping in Tanzania. I don't read trashy romances or soft porn, but pretty much anything else is grist to my mill.

My daughter is studying Philosophy and English & American Literature at Kent university, in Canterbury, which sounds irrelevant, but actually leads me into areas I may not otherwise have wandered into.

Anyway. I am glad to make your acquaintance.

I've always loved reading since my dad gave me a crate of old Philip K. Dick books when I was 11 or so, I plan to study literature later on. I'm so interested in reading and comparing Literature in Arabic with other languages. At the moment, I'm working on comparing Arabic with English basically in politeness strategies used in some literary works. Among those works is Pygmalion by G.Brenard Shaw. although it is a short and enjoyable play, it needs alot to be done in analysing it on the base of stylistics..

I stumbled across this site while looking up some stuff to help with my english lit work and it seems so far that it might be a great help! :D Even if its not, its great to have access to talk to people that love to read! :) I absolutely LOVE reading, I've got books scattered all around the place and I just pick one up and continue reading, and so often I end up reading around 6 books at a time!

I find this forum marvellous, because it's not only about literature, for one thing, and I've already noticed quite a few interesting people! And it's already encouraged me to go and look up a few authors I didn't know!! I don't live in an English-speaking country, so this forum is wonderful to practise my language skills as well. I tend to use a lot of qualifiers in my writing.

And I also tend to use "Anyway" a lot as a subject changer. Just to warn you.

Anyway, I'm just an AP student. I'm in AP Lit and Comp this year. I enjoy it, but I find that I prefer AP Language. If you had asked me last year, I would have guessed Literature was my preference, but that's just not the case, it seems. Surprised myself, a little.

I'm a senior, trying to scrape up enough money to pay for a $31,698 comprehensive fee, for my dream college. Just waiting for some of these scholarship decisions to come it. Writings skills really help with those essays. I brag to myself in private, becuase most of my friends a like "What good is an English Major, except for teaching?" But then they encounter all those applications with required essays, and now look who has the advantage.

That's okay, though. They're doing well enough, as am I.

My name is my own. It's unique, eccentric and unusual... as am I.

I was born and live in Canada but on the American border, my grandmother was English, My hubby is a Scot, my oldest is a french/english bilingual.

I've written short stories about children with special needs, so they can understand what they have, and so can those who are not of literary understanding, or masters of linguistics. I did this out of need. Now for myself, I am trying my hand at a full-length sci-fi type novel. I have 11 pages and the plot thought out...lol. I'm a real newbie at writing, but I'm good, if I can get past my own grammar.

I have excellent computer skills, although I'm a 2 finger typist and look at my keyboard. My spelling is excellent, and it's rare that I reach for spell check or a dictionary, although sometimes my typing is faster than the keyboard can keep up...lol. I'm also dyslexic and rarily will you know it.

My cousin taught me to read about the age of 3, good thing as my mom can barely read. I'm an avid and sometimes a voracious, reader. I was tested twice, first at age 12... and again about 10 yrs ago. Both times I read 240 words per minute, reading every word and comprehending what I read.

I only have a college background, and that's to counsel children and youth, which I have never done. I'm a JK Rowlings... BEFORE she became famous...lol... poor as a pauper.

I have lots of inspiration in my children, grandchildren, friends, clients, neighbours, pets and wildlife. They're all quite a bunch of characters...lol.
