9/10.
I saw "La vita est bela" with Begnini..Ermmmm..why is this film considered so good?? Nevermind..
"Henry and June" 7/10
It was OK. It is about Henry Miller, his wife June and Anais Nin. I can remember it being such a big deal when it was first out. It wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular either. I could really take or leave it.
"It's My Party" 9/10
Very depressing film but very good. I have seen it so many times. I just stayed up to watch it again the other night. It is about a man (Eric Roberts) who is dying of AIDS. He throws a party before he decides to commit suicide. Yeah, it is very "uplifting"! It is incredibly sad, but very well-acted.
Carnival of Souls - the Wes Craven remake
I give it an 8/10 just because it was so strange. The character moves from reality (or it so it seems) to nightmare to near-death and back to reality again. And again.
There is an actual story which comes through in bits between each inexplicable transition. Strange strange movie.
The Golden Compass - 8/10. :D
"Hairspray" (2007) - 9/10
I just watched this again the other day. I love this movie! It really is just pure, simple fun! I saw the original film in the theater when it was first out. I enjoyed that alot. So, I liked the idea of it being turned into a Broadway musical. I saw the stage show and I thoroughly enjoyed it (even though it is slightly different from the 1988 film). Now this film is actually slightly different from the stage production. I have to say that I liked the movie much better. I think it has the feeling of an "old-time" musical to it. It is just a fun film to watch.
Well, no, compared to genuinely good italian films, this was nothing!!
It was advertised a lot, mainly because Roberto Benigni was in it and I think even produced it. And he was quite popular at the time, not so much anymore.
I just looked on imdb.com for La vita e' bella, it was made in 1997! No way, 10 years ago???
The Game Plan... let's see, maybe I'll give it 8/10. It was a funny movie.
A Scanner Darkly 9/10
It was a little hard to follow at times, but otherwise it was pretty good. Keaneu Reeves Wynona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downy Jr. star in this animated film about a group of drug users and the under-cover narcotics agents among them trying to track the source of a dangerous, brain damaging, addictive drug called Substance D.
It's based on the semi-autobiographical book by Philip Dick, written in 1977, after he and several of his friends are permanently affected by their heavy drug use in the late sixties and early seventies.
Oh i see..i spelled both the name and title wrongly  Are you italian?
(i apologise if you are, for the violation of the language   )
I don't think i like Benigni at all. Although there were two Jarmusch films ("Down by the law" and "Coffee and cigarettes") where he wasn't bad at all, i admit. But overall i find him..annoying ;)
Let's say I'm part italian...long story!!
But hey, I thought you were actually changing the title to latin for some mysterious reason! :D And I've mispelled Benigni's name before...
I have Coffee and cigarettes and yes, he was tolerable in it. He was the nervous espresso drinker, right? But he's not my favourite actor either for talent or looks (a far cry from Johnny Depp for sure!).
And he always seems to act alongside his wife in his films...
The other film in which he was ok so to speak, was Il piccolo diavolo (The little devil), but it did have Walter Matthau as well.
August Rush ~ I really liked it. It's about a prodigy inspired to compose music based on the cacophonous sounds of everyday life. The movie is set against the backdrop of NYC with on location scenes at the Julliard School of Music. The boy roams the streets, an orphan. The end is beautiful, one of those rare films where the audience knows what the characters must find themselves. Highly recommend it.
Amelie
8/10
Botched 7/10
Lady Wentworth, do you have the soundtrack CD; I have it and have enjoyed it emensely! :thumbs_up Unfortunately I have never yet seen the film but I really want to someday. My friend, Lynne, said it was great but then we don't normally agree on all films so I must judge for myself someday soon.
I think Amelie is a wonderful film! i'd give it a 9/10. (also a 10/10 for the soundtrack!)
Can I rate a Broadway show here? I saw Spamalot with Larry the Leprechaun last week and unfortunately I only thought it was so-so. My wife got the tickets as a present for my upcoming birthday. Larry snuck in free, by the way. ;)
As to the show, when it stuck close to the movie, "Monty Python And The Holy Grail" it was good. But the show felt certain obligations to fitting into a Broadway show format and when it drifted off the movie it was very mediocre. Plus the songs and singing wasn't very interesting. But it was funny in spots so I give it a 5/10.
But remember, I'm a harsh critic. My wife thought it was funny and enjoyable. But she wouldn't rank it wth her best Broadway shows.
Virgil, I say "how can you beat the original???"
Glad at least you wife liked it and laughed. Sounds like fun anyway accompanied by Larry the Leprechaun - that was not easy to spell!;) Did your wife think you had totally lost your mind carrying around a stuffed guy toy? Not sure that came out right... Anyway, do see V's pictures of NYC in that thread - they are quite lovely, also entertaining, and they evoke the spirit of the season in the Big Apple. Good job, Virg!:thumbs_up
Yes, I most definitely do have the soundtrack! :D I just loved it so much.
I did like the film when I first saw it, but something happened that made me change my opinion of it. How could a personal situation change my opinion of a film? Well, if you knew the situation, I think it would make sense. You actually wouldn't even have to see the film to understand my reasoning.
I am really hoping that you are just being a "harsh" critic. :) I was really looking forward to seeing it and I am a tad bit skeptical now. I am afraid that this will turn out to be one of those shows that everyone says they love because they feel that they "have" to. Then you are one of the few people that actually will state your honest opinion. I am a huge Monty Python fan. So I already owned the cast album. Of course, listening to just the music isn't the same as experiencing of the entire show.
If you have the album and like it, I imagine you will like the show LW. You must now know the story and the set and movement on stage was pretty good. I didn't care how the Lady of the Lake became prominant in the play, just so they could add a love interest and have a female character more prominant. And I thought Lancelot being gay was corny. Was that in the movie? I also didn't think there were any memorable songs. But the scenes where they "run away" from the battle and the killer rabbit were well done.
Wow, we have a few MP fans here! Ok, are they the best or what???
Lady Wentworth, I hope Virgil is wrong this time or doesn't have your same taste. Hopefully you will like the show; his wife seemed to like it well enough. Oh yikes - the 'killer bunny" is my favorite scene - Virgil, and I love the holy hand-granade!!!
So you have the soundtrack to Amelie - it came in my library to my gleeful eyes! I was able to download it and get the music. I ordered "Dead Again" tonight. I hope you don't say you have it - oh well, if you do. It dawned on me that was one KB/Doyle album I did not own. I actually, ordered a like-new one - hope it is fine...was a good price. Do you just love soundtracks? By the way, "As you Like it" CD is stunning! I had to have it. PD does it again! Awww...

Yep, he was the nervous espresso drinker ;)
Who doesn't like Johny Depp ? :D
 i didn't like this film (the bad thing is that first i bought the dvd and then i saw the film
The Company -- 2007 miniseries 4 1/2 hrs., all in all pretty good espionage, action
the recent Frank Langella one "Starting Out In th Evening" -- only for the mature; not a Hollywood-type of movie; Langella deserves consideration for Academy Award, well-done; girl was good too. Abit on the sober and dark side. About literature.
I finally got to see hte movie Once. What a wonderful movie. I couldnt help bout laugh at the beginning with the "skanger" as we call them. There was so much emotion in the movie. 10/10
The Affair of the Necklace
5/10
Satisfying in terms of costumes, and the overall atmosphere, but the acting....
there is just something so natural about it. And the songs in it are beautiful. It also brings to life a reality that is in Dublin today, with eastern europeans living in rundown places, and the poverty some of them live in here. The Big issue, and flower selling thing is there everyday. The relationship between the two main characters was full of passion. No wonder they ended up getting together in real life!
Is this the movie with Hillary Swank?
Mr. Brooks - 8/10
I was surprised to find out that this movie was actually good. At least for me it was good. I got it from Netflix "just because". I ended up liking it enough. I am one of the few people that actually doesn't mind Kevin Costner. I think that he was the best part of the film. Definitely a different role than he usually plays.
Yes, LW, that's the one.
Persuasion- I love Persuasion. Was undisturbed watching it, then it gets to THAT BIT! and my mam walks in and starts talking!!!(Lady Went knows what bit i'm on about!)
Ciaran Hinds is not a looker, but the character Captain Wentworth... *swoons*
Niamh, I love that version and recently broke down and purchased it. I love Ciaran Hinds, even if he is 'not a looker', as you put it. Maybe he appeals to older ladies like me, who know;) . He has 'something' one can't quite describe - *swoons* is good.
I absolutely love him in the role of the A&E version of "The Mayor of Casterbridge" - the ending breaks my heart and I sob everytime. He makes the perfect Michael Henchard in that film, and the perfect Captain Wentworth in "Persuasion".
Last night I tried to watch the rest of ..
"White Nights" starring the two incredible talents and dancers - Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hinds....
let me explain.... I need a new DVD player and am still trying to figure out just what kind to buy for my new HD TV...you know, technology keeps advancing so rapidly that one is left standing in a cloud of dust, totally confused. Right now there are dozens of different kinds out there, to choose from...:eek2: I am thoroughly miffed by now! Ok, anyway, my current player is on the blink and I can watch about an hour and then it just freezes up, like an older computer.
So anyway, I am half way through that film and enjoying it very much. I only saw it years ago. The story may lack a little, but the acting is fairly good and the dancing is extraordinary and well worth seeing the film for. Also, the song "Say You, Say Me" was giving the Oscar that year, for best song. It is a very interesting film and if you like dancers, trust me, you will like this film very much. The blending of ballet and tap is amazing! Also, Helen Mirren and Isabella Roselina have memorable parts, although short.
So when the freezeup came, I switched to my VHS player and watched the rest of...
"Dead Poet's Society" - what a great film this is and after all these years it still holds up and I cry at certain scenes. I would give this fine film a 10/10 definitely. I can't find fault with anything in it. :thumbs_up
I agree that the end of the mayor of Casterbridge was very sad. He was wonderful in that dramatisation.
Niamh, so you saw that version, too? I really thought it was so well done. I had to buy it and now watch it often although that ending kills me everytime. I thought he was wonderful acting in that film. He is a very fine actor with great facial expressions - very subtle at times. He has a certain appeal.
Not THAT part?!?!? How terrible! No matter how many times I may read that part, or watch it, I have to have complete solitude to just live in that moment! :) Poor you! No, Hinds isn't the handsomest of men, but for some reason when he is Wentworth, he is the greatest man alive! :D
I completely forgot all about "Say You, Say Me"!! I forgot that it was in that movie. Now I have it going through my head! Thanks, Janine! :p
Oh, and don't even get me started on "Dead Poets Society"!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THAT FILM!!!! Once I start talking about that one it is hard for me to stop!
You said it, LW! Hinds becomes Captain Wentworth in that film!
Don't you hate it when someone does that? Then you are stuck with that tune in your head all day long.....;) You can't rid yourself of it...catchy little song isn't it?:lol:Quote:

Well, I gave it a 10/10!!! :D I should rerate it for you to a 12/10!:lol:Quote:
