Game: Ask the Person Below You

The time my (former) best friend conspired with another girl to betray me, without me ever suspecting it. I didn't know she had gotten my email password and was reading my mail for weeks. Then she sent me an email under a false name about something I had been sharing with friends in a chatroom, but not her. I guess she felt betrayed herself? Anyway, I responded at length to this fake person. A couple days later my friend handed me a note after lunch, I went to class, sat down, opened it...and it was a printout of my reply email. Time stood still. Absolutely stood still, and it was like my insides caved in. I never spoke to her again, and she moved away a month later.

Do you consider yourself a trustworthy friend?

I don't think I should be answering this, but anyway....
No, I don't find myself a trustworthy friend. Hell, I don't even trust myself/myselves.

What do you think trust is, or should be?

Definitely. Everything you do or neglect to do will result in a different chain of events. But even more mind-boggling, millions of other people may be doing something right now whose cumulitive effect will result in a big change in your future. Don't you love thinking about things like that? :D Twists your brain up more than drugs or politics...well, maybe not more than politics. :p

A very Maugham-ish question: can Existentialism and Destiny both be true? (In other words, can your fate be predetermined, but your actions dictate your fate, both at the same time?

if fate determines 'an action which determines fate', then it is fate.
you cant even say ur action determined the fate cuz it was fate which brought the action.

if itz 'action' determines the fate. therz nothin as fate determining anything as well?

but in some cases u can say like in a chemical reaction, if u do it in one particular way, the results will be such n such. here the fate is known but cud u say it is predetermined? as if u bring any changes while the reaction is going on, the fate changes. ohhh i donno what am talking, you make me nuts..

Hmm that is a toughy. I think so, yes. Because it's your decision to make a commitment. There are many things people feel bind them to a situation, such as financial or emotional investment, but really the choice is always there for them to leave. It's only by weighing the consequences of such an action that they choose to stay. I think many people, including myself, often mistake the potentially unpleasant result of a choice as a physical limitation on our actions themselves. But really, the freedom of choice still exists once you've decided to make your commitment. (I'm just throwing pronouns all over the place today, huh? :p)

On the other hand, the *feeling* of freedom can sometimes be stifled simply by the consciousness of having committed. I think a lot of people leave relationships, for example, to prove to themselves that they are still free, because they've ceased to feel in control. But if you're at peace with your commitment and feel that it was the right decision to make, you will always feel liberated.

However...

...assuming "free will" is a universal truth: if a person manages to control another's mind through fear or influence, can the other still be said to have free will? Is it possible to lose free will and gain it back again, purely as a state of mind? or is it a constant, simply being unused?

firstly, if a person "manages to control another's mind" yes, the other can have free will. they can choose to not be controlled, and take care of whatever brought on their controlability (new word, y'all) in the first place.
secondly, the person who controlled in the first place is setting him/herself up for a lot of damage down the road when that crap that s-he did comes back to him/her.
i think it is always possible to retain/regain free will, and yes to your last question.

I usually think, "No, it is not time to get up. Please don't let it be time to get up. I have to make myself get up. Come on, Emily, get up." Then I think, "my neck/back/shoulder muscle hurts." Then I think, "Is anyone else home? How many hours do I have to myself today before people come home?"

In other words, thinking is for nighttime. :p Morning is for, "Oh crap. It's morning."

I always remember stuff I've forgotten when I'm in the shower. Is there a particular time like brushing teeth/washing dishes/exercising, when you find memories or thoughts always seem to occur to you?
