Great Gatsby Review

I am a sixth form student who is studying "The Great Gatsby" as part of my A level course. I really enjoyed the book and find that analysing it in class brings attention to things I hadn't even noticed. Fitzgeralds attention to detail is what makes this book so successful. However our essay title is about the different narrative techniques used in the novel and i am having difficulty on what to write i don't see how i can write a hole essay purely about narrative technique! Any comments u have on this asect of the book i'd be really grateful to hear!!! thanks

I found the Great Gatsby to be a clear representation of the American Dream. The many themes portrayed through the book captivated my attention and I was not able to put it down.

The Great Gatsby has been a timeless classic throughout many schools. Recently, I read this novel in my own high school English Class; not because we HAVE to read, but because it teaches us that society has changed throughout the generations, and shows a more susceptible viewpoint of morality. Not only does it describe a young man going through his life with more then awkward people, but it also describes Fitzgerald's life itself. During the time Fitzgerald wrote this novel, he was dealing with his own personal moral issues. When printed, this novel was not as popular as his other, "This Side of Paradise". Isn't it funny how in his time, the first book he wrote was a major hit; yet when he wrote "The Great Gatsby" it was not half as popular? However, nowadays, does it strike you as odd that while "This Side of Paradise" was popular it isn't now? or that "The Great Gatsby" was NOT popular then... but is now?

As our AS level coursework piece we were given the Great Gastby, with the opition of setting our own essay question at the end with critcs.<br> Most of the class seemeed down hearted once they opened the first page. Althought the book does get better towards the end the first few chapters are slow starting. i dont view this book as the right novel to study for our AS level. especially when many students couldnt get into the story, how are we supposed to do well in our coursweork if we cant get into the book?!<br>the film was just as boring

I think the Great Gatsby was a great book. It really helped me understand America in the 1920s. I had to read the book for my 11th grade english calss. I liked the end of the book the best. I thought the movie was great too. I would suggest this book to anyone.

The Great Gatsby is not a book that should be read as a story, but one to be read as an eye opener. I am a year11 student studying this book. This book is absolutely horrible as a story, but it is a pure classic for studying. The aspects in this novel is amazing, as we compare it to our modern day and age. The major questions of how are we motivated, the blinding powers and corruption of money, the confusion of what true love is, and above all change, the most amazing part of our lives in change. Gatsby can be portrayed as many things, but he is more firmly portrayed as an innocent man who has been tempted and then utterly consumed by the lust of money. His blindness reaches almost no ends, as in the end it kills him and leaves desolation and complete dissatisfaction.<br>People are the problem in this world, as they should have enought responsiblility to control money, instead of money controlling them. The immaturity seen in all the characters is amazing, as you can relate it to most of the people in your life. More importantly the inacceptance of change is further more ridiculous, as you'd expect that older people would be more use to change with all their years of experience. Instead they somehow hate it with all their might, as they cannot accept anything in their lives. Their pride and utter selfishness blinds them to see images of the past which they cannot not hold onto, because even with their extraordinary years of experience they have not find any keys to the point of life. Acceptance is a major issue, which comes back to the state of immaturity and pride in our lives.<br>Even though Nick had some humility, even he was a hypocrite, as he painted an image inside our heads of each character. As you read more and learn more in life you learn not to trust humans, but than again that's being hypocritcal.

I was assigned to read The Great Gatsby as pasrt of my A-level English course. I had read it before and did not find it very stimulating. However once we studies it in class and revealed new depths of the characters i thoroughly enjoyed it. I also thought the film was very close to the text and enjoyed watching that.

this book was incredibly hard to read, especially the introduction (not all book have it). we're covering this book in yr 10 now and many people have found it rather boring and too confusing at times. It might be a classic but i've read better ones

Some of you people are absolutely stupid. The great gatsby was an outstanding novel that completly summed up the 1920s. A Novel such as this one only comes around once a centry and for a novel as great as this to be put down by people such as yourselves is absurd.

I read the book The Great Gatsby for C.P. ENGLISH i thought this was a good book, its meaning is much more than "money cant buy happiness" but if you payed attention to Gatsby he seemed to put much more effort into getting wealthy and showing it off to people than actually going for his own dream...daisy, he spent more time fulfilling what was daisys dream, a wealthy man. Money doesnt buy happiness of course but personality is what gets love, he should have used his personality more than his money in this book. But hey thats my own opinion of the book.

Firstly when i started reading this novel i found it soo dull and dry. But we were taught the book in a great manner that i really enjoyed it at the end.I think the way u are taught a novel or any book is important.

I'm a British college student and I love the Great Gatsby. It's well written and structured and it creates the world of the 1920s. I'm currently writing a 3000 word essay on how women are limited by their social situation in the book so any advice would be appreciated.

Here is why Gatsby is great:<br>Gatsby tries desperately, but fails miserably at becoming a legitimate member of that rich, upper class society despite his money; being a part of Tom, Daisy's and those other peoples lives is not defined entirely by their wealth; it's about the way they behave and the way they conduct their lives and their moral standards. Fitzergerald wants the reader to see that Gatsby lacks the negative qualities which he must have in order to be a true member of that group; Gatsby is honest, selfless (think of his response to Daisy's accident) and kind. Regardless of whether he gambles, Gatsby is still great because of his inate personality. Gatsby is great in Nick's eyes because he will never fit into that nasty croud of people, no matter how hard he tries.

The Great Gatsby is one of the best books I've read. The characters symbolize america during the" the roaring twenties and I felt like I had read something that was real not just in some author's mind

The Great Gatsby the glorious American novel, embodies all that is wrong with America, it is in it’s self an inadequately written novel. Nick as a narrator never comes close to satisfying the readers needs to have an unbiased and free flowing story. As acclaimed as the novel is the story starts off slow and goes down hill from there, with a few exceptions the story and it’s narrator never manage to grasp the attention of the reader long enough to express the true meaning of the novel. If one wants to comprehend the dialogue in the novel the reader must read with a careful eye, for it format is less than savory. Gatsby with it’s long drawn out chapters with mindless chirping, like a flock of birds perched in a tree migrating south with the readers mind. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s experience of love makes the story irritable to comprehend, he writes about a love that is untrue to everyone other than himself and because of that, the story lacks the ability to captivate. Love is not the only problem in the book, the books lacks character, events are uneventful, Fitzgerald did not give Nick the proper language to capture the true essence of what the great Gatsby is all about.

hey, my teacher wants me to do a project on the symbolism of gatsby's house. Does anyone know what the colors of the house represent?

the people in the book who arn't born into wealth and are trying to achieve the american dream all die. <br><br>myrtle - she tries to be a different person, someone who is wealthy. (not born into wealth)<br>gatsby - ends up with all the things that money can buy. (not born into wealth)<br>........ and so on..<br><br>is this some sort of covered structure, or unintentional..

We have to read the book in school. I think that's why my opinion of the novel is as awful as ist is. We have to read it in English, but I am German. So, it's hard to understand. But I think, if I had read the novel by myself, out of school, I wouldn't have found it so boring. I think it's a thing of attitude. <br>All in all: It's ok, and it's fun reading it, if you understand it.<br>

I just read this book on the recommendation of a friend. I couldn't put it down because his characters were fascinating and I couldn't wait to find out what happened. But the end was so disappointing! I felt like I was fooled by the author. Halfway through the book I was pleased with how human the characters were, how you could sympathize with all of them and understand and forgive them for all their faults. But then at the end he suddenly springs it on you that they were all corrupt, but he never really gives any evidence of it. He just has Nick Carraway all of a sudden tell us that everybody in the book was horrible, and you feel like he knows something you don't, like Fitzgerald didn't tell us enough. My favorite part was the chapter where Gatsby and Daisy meet again for the first time in five years. I think Gatsby's love and longing for Daisy is really beautiful, but what does he see in her? And then I approved of the way Daisy refused to be unfaithful to Tom and they patched things up and were pretty happy, but then Nick says that Daisy and Tom were awful people! That was about the only good decision Daisy made all book long. As for Tom, what did HE see in Myrtle? Jordan wasn't so bad, but again Fitzgerald assumes we can figure out what went wrong between her and Nick. Maybe I'm just stupid, or not old enough to understand this book, but I felt like just about every single character betrayed me. What a useless book! It's a shame, because Fitzgerald writes beautifully.

I was required to read this book for my 9th grade English class. It was the first book we read this year, so I was barely out of 8th grade. But, I loved this book! I discovered much symbolism in this book. I'm curious, why hasn't anyone mentioned the eyes that were supposedly watching over everything that was going on. It seems to me that perhaps these were supposed to symbolize a "god" that watched everything that was going on without intervening. Perhaps that is what Fitzgerald happened to see "God" as. Something else Fitzgerald might have been trying to convey is that people are not always what they seem. That you must look past what other people say about something and find out for yourself. There were rumors going around that he was a murderer, & all sorts of other things, but, who would have expected him to be willing to give his life for the woman he loved if he was a ruthless criminal? Something else no one mentioned was Daisy & Tom's daughter. Even if they had been good people, the lack of attention they showed their daughter didn't appeal to me in the least. If anyone out there really doesn't like the book, but they have to do a research paper on it, let me know, there's tons of other analogies & whatnot if you want them.

Anyone who doesnt have some understanding of america in the 1920's should not be reading this book. The story is wonderfully written and has many themes evident throughout the novel relating to the 1920's and the "jazz age". Anyone who cant see that has got something wrong-not Fitzgerald.

If you like The Great Gatsby try reading his other 4 novels. they are The beautiful and damned, the love of the last tycoon, tender is the night, and this side of paradise. Every one of these novels is spectacular

Everything Fitzgerald wrote was autobiographical, his books reflect what he himself was caught up in. There is always a desperation like, "how do I get out of this trap?" Maybe it was a form of therapy for him to write, he was one of the very few that got to bear his heart or part of his heart to the whole world. <br>Incidently, the movie starring Robert Redford won an Academy Award for the costumes and sets and design. Redford hated that role, the Mad Magazine parody of it had him constantly trying to escape. But it is one of the few movies that stays very close to the author.

to all the people who said "i didn't like it, it was boring, bla bla bla" you are all obviously around my age (in high school) and its all obvious you're all slack and couldn't be bothered to read it. those americans being slack jeez its easier for you to get it than me im an aussie and have not been brought up with modern american values let alone than 1920 american values maybe if you looked at values from that time and tried to put some effort into empathising with the characters of the novel from a 1920's point of view and no a 2004 point of view maybe you would understand it a little better. i was made to read this book to i would probably never have even heard of it let alone read it simply because i see no point in reading old american books. but those of you who also made to read it if you have to read it at least put some effort in otherwise you really are wasting your time. i found the book and characters confusing but intriguing all the same. the fact that the author has given us nothing until at least a third of the way through the about any of the characters and that when you look back as a reader we have learnt suprisingly little about the narrator nick and only a limited amounts about the other characters, makes you have to think and infer in order to make any sense out of the book at all. after reading the book i had to do a fair bit of research so as to under stand it and to all those who don't get it i suggest you do the same. yes for kids today it is a difficault book to make sense of i'm sure not denying any one that but all that means is that you have got to put in a little extra effort!! this book really does teach us a lot about the values of 1920's america. anyone who also cares to look can alo see how values today can be linked to those of the time the book was written. for example the organised crime sindicates of today gained alot of their wealth and power from the era in which the book is set.<br><br>this was a pretty hard book to understand without understanding the time period in which it was set but once i had studied it i found it a fair bit easier to comprehend. so thats what i have to say to any one who doesn't get it research it and look at it from the time it was set not from a today point of view.<br><br>

this book doesn't really keep my intention. i must read it because i've got an examination about it. but according to me it's not very interesting and even boring. Of course there are moving passages but it's not the main point of the book, moreover to my mind the moral and the social cristiscm are a little bit simplistic and reducing.

This book teaches us a great deal about the decadence of the "Jazz Age" and the balance in our own minds involving the ever-opposing forces of good (right) and evil (wrong). Currently, I am enjoying this timeless novel for the sixth time.

i'm studying this book for A-level English Literature. i don't like it for the purely subjective reaosn that i don't enjoy reading it, i don't like the way it makes me feel. it's so well written that all the horrid concpets and scenes it explores mar my enjoyment. however, i have to write coursework on the facades in the book and wondered if anyone had any exciting (or not) theories or comments.

Sorry to disagree with many of you but the Great Gatsby is NOT an example of fine literature, in my opinion. <br>Yes, the book is easy to analyze (if you have to do a report or essay on a book, choose this one) but much of the text could be omitted because of lack of relevance or because it takes away from the plot. I found at the end of the novel that part of the conclusion we were supposed to come to was that Gatsby's hope, the green light, was daisy and by living in the past he lost any chance of having her in the real world - but when we were introduced to Gatsby's motives that was already established. The reader knows throughout the novel that a chance of getting Daisy is slim and I dont know about you, but i never expected Gatsby to get her in the first place. After being introduced to Tom and seeing what kind of a man he was, chances of Daisy breaking free, even if she wanted to, were slim<br>This is simply my opinion, something for you to question and possibly help you to see things from another view.<br>

In my opinion the book trys to show up the American Dream in a new way. The American Dream becomes mostly defined by success connected with commercial and not social aspects. This book shows up social aspects on how to put the American Dream into action. In this case Gatsby did not succeed but the narrator shows up the will to and the way to fullfill the will. <br>I didnt read the whole book but i am going to (English 12th class Germany). I hope I get more aspects of the "social defined"-American Dream.

Does anyone know why Fitzgerald choose to incorporate the cover art into the book????

I read the Great Gatsby in my English III honors class. We read this book in 2 weeks. I really enjoyed this book and would even refer to it as the "Best Book I have ever read" If it wouldn't have been for school, I don't think I would have been able to put the book down. I enjoyed every little detail of the book. I thought it was really intelligent the way Fitzgerald even thought of the green light as love and longing. So, I had to read this book now, and I have to write five essays on it. 1) Personality of all characters 2) sympathy towards someone in the end , who is that? 3) attitude towards wealth and sex...I think its crazy!!!I like the book, but Im not very good at anylze .

I am a High School student in Egypt, who was assigned to read The Great Gatsby for my English class. It wasn't a hard book to understand or read but i didn't like it. There were something that got my attention a couple of times, like the advice Nick's father said " Just Remeber that not all the people had the same advantages as you did". And I think the way Gatsby died sends an obvious message that Money cannot buy happiness and that you can repeat the past!

to cut a long story short, this is an absolutely fantastic book. fitzgerald writes with excellant ease to captivate and emphasise the death of the American Dream using gatsby as the fallen hero. brillant reading old sport

I think that Fintzgerald clearly indicated the feeling and the tone of the "Roaring Twenties". I think the way all the characters were portrayed were just a work of genius. I had to read the book for my english 3 class and I can say that all though it started off rather boring at the end it payed off. Although the movie is almost word for word as the book nothing can come pair imagination of the human mind.<br>

this book was so, so it had far too many boring moments and meaningless scenes, basically it shows us an example of how stupid a man is when he is in love with a women. the opening qoute of the book tells you everything, if anything we should praise gatsby for working his *** off to get all his riches just to get to gatsby, if you take deep thought into this book you realize alot of things that humans do carelessly... dont read this book unless you have ALOT of free time or unless you have too.

I've just finished this book for English honors, and I'm wondering if anyone else disliked Nick as much as I did. He seemed so fake to me, and all through the book, he describes Jay and Daisy and everyone so eloquently and as such a dream world, yet he also expects us to see through his words and hate the world he's just decribed. I loved the book - except for Nick.

How many times has the "Great Gatsby" been re-written.<br>Personaly I thought the book was alright.<br>Those who don't understand the book choose to do so.<br>The litriture was very intricate and a change from the 'generic' style writing that many authors seem to use these days!<br>The book is still relevent today.<br>I enjoyed the book and will read it again.

Well I had to read The Great Gatsby for English class. The reason that our English teacher made us read it is because she said that it was a classic. I could agree with her on some of it. At the beggining of the book it was boring and I kept on falling asleep. But whenever it got to the action than that was when I got interested. Some what. It's not at the top of my list to just sit down and read but, it was a pretty intertaining book, even for a classic.
