I have, certainly, in the past, especially if I really cared for the behalved individual; I would even go as far to say that I would rather someone insulted me, rather than someone I love.
Certain things, however, bother me immensely, whether it involves strangers or loved ones, such as people arguing loudly or violently in public, and I have "butted in" in the past for the individuals to "settle down" or "take it elsewhere, but, yes, to answer the question directly, I can and do take offence on behalf of others.

I have encountered this precise situation twice, and, in both scenarios, I returned the wallet (in one case) and the purse (in the other) anonymously without having stolen a penny.
