Hi
This is my first post. I'm from near London in the UK, was hoping to find a forum of short story writers, to share work and interests and Google came up with this.
Not had a chance to read all intros yet as kids are squalling in front of tv right now, but spotted Tiresias mention Steve Earle. I love his music.
Right now reading The Wind Up Bird, Japanese short stories in translation and love them.
Hope to get to know you all in time.
welcome to litnet!
20 mil! There is little over 4 million people in the whole of Ireland!
wow...wow....Just thinking cairo is 28 million people... but the smaller cities like Alex which I would call tiny has atleat 13million.... wow its amazing how differntly people see things
:D
btw heelo  and welcome all newbies
Do you mean to ask if NY doubles in population during from visitors? We have 8 million inhabitants; doubling would mean that it would go to 16 million. I know we get a lot of tourists, but that is more than I can imagine. No I don't think it doubles. But they say the hotels are always full.
Hi everyone! My name is Ricksea, but you can call me Rick if you would like. This is my first post, and from what I have read this seems to be an excellant forum. I am currently a high school student and am planning to major in English in college. Literature is my life, and my dream is to become a professional textbook editor. It may seem like a dull career to most, but you will find that I am not a boring person at all. I hope I have fun here!
Speaking as some whose qualifications are in business and finance and dealing with scientists and engineers for a living, can I pass on my highest accolade for your chosen career path!
There will always be sufficient attraction, thanks to fame, money and lifestyle, in "professional" careers - doctors, lawyers, scientists and engineers, but there can never be enough people to whom literature is a vocation. I salute you.
Hello. I've shipwrecked (not accidentally) on to this forum from another. I already recognize some names, which is interesting. Although I've disguised myself. Haha. :)
I'm a graduate student in Comparative Literature, and I study primarily West African literature in French. But I'm really here to talk about everything else I love to read, because I need a break from my academic life once in a while. Some of my favorite authors are Barbara Kingsolver, Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, John Irving, and George R.R. Martin.
Guess that's it for now. :)

Hello everyone. I was hoping someone could help me out. My name is Kimmy. I just registered for the first time on this site tonight and created a profile. I have no clue how to even post anything or contact anyone. I'm wanting to post something on this book by H.G. Wells called The War of the Worlds. I'm not wanting to post this to anyone in particular, but practically anyone whose read this book. I just got done reading the book for school, and I have these sheets with questions I need to have answered from the book. There were 3 questions I was having a hard time with. I was hoping anyone whose read the book could try to answer any of these questions for me. I'd really appreciate it. I know this probably isn't the right site for this, but I need help asap!! My project is due soon and I don't understand it!! My 3 questions I need help answering for this are:
1. What historical disaster does the narrator refer to in the book?
2. When the martians died, where was the message sent to first?
3. What technology was gained from the martians?
If anyone whose read this book can help me out, please let me know!! I don't know how this works or if anyone will even see this. If this is how it works, then please send me messages or respond to this somehow. Thank you so much to anyone who helps me out :-) I feel really stupid.
Welcome Kratayra. Nice to see you here. I hope you like lit net. It's the best. ;) Actually we are discussing John Irving's A Prayer For Owen Meany in the book of the month forum this month. If you've read it, perhaps you can join in. Here's a short cut: http://www.online-literature.com/for...126#post373126.
Welcome to the other newbies. :)
Hi gymgirl! Welcome to the forum. :)
These are some really good books you have mentioned over here. I would especially recommend you Jane Eyre, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and A Tale of Two Cities. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is also a fine and a short read. I have read some of the Tales from the Arabian Nights. Well, their Urdu translation and they were enjoyable. :)
Have fun!
Hey KxIxMxMxY51890, I am sorry I haven't read the book on which you need help. Somebody else might be able to help you, you can also post it in the related subforum. Anyway, welcome to the forum. :)Quote:

Hi all!
My name is Rachel and am an avid reader. I'm currently in a book club from meetup.com. I adore the classics, mysteries, poetry, short stories, and some recent fiction.
Hello to all the new members! hope you like this site as much as me!
I am a 16 year old high school student born in China and moving around ever since. Currently living in The states. Finished with the basics of my philosophy.
Dont u dare ban me!!
Hello, I joined a while back, then forgot about it, then remembered about it in my typically scatty way. As you may guess from my name, I'm a fan of Hamlet, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. they are both very clever plays. A couple of questions,
1. How do you get an avatar?
2. How do you change the little message under your name?
3. I heard tell of a games section, where would I find this?
I haven't logged on to this forum since I signed up in 2005. I'm sure I never introduced myself. I am a middle-aged teacher of teenagers. I work in a one-room high school, teaching all subjects. I have a mathematics and biology ( BS in Wildlife Biology, minor in math; MS in Range Management)background from college, but fell in love with teaching. Literature has become a passion, especially sharing good literature with my students. Other that my work and my family (husband, three grown sons) my loves are my Basset Hound, Annabelle; my goose, Edith; my two Guinea pigs, Lucille and Rosie, and my flock of laying hens. Books, kids, animals - that's about it. My dream is to have a couple of Scottish highland cattle and a small flock of sheep. Oh yeah, I am a compulisve knitter.
Hi there people,
I love reading, writing, and acting. That's really all there is to know about me. I'm obsessed with Jane Austen, Stephenie Meyer, and Libba Bray novels.
On the very start of this page, you will notice the option of Quick Links. Click on it, and you will get the options to change your signature, avatar, profile, etc.
It's above General ChatQuote:

Hi. I love reading, music, art, discussion, etc., etc.
Hey welcome to all you new members, hope you enjoy LitNet as much as me!
Hello... I'm Elissa, I'm 16 and this June, I'll be in 1st year college. My course is Comparative Literature, specifically European Literature (and my sis is killing me for not being more 'patriotic' xP). Anyway, I write some stories on my free time, read books (I'm currently on The Count of Monte Cristo).
Nice to meet you all. :)
Well, hello everybody. I'm 17, a junior in high school and can't wait to be done with it. I Love to read, I always have. I just finished reading "A Streecar Named Desire". I usually hate reading plays, but I liked this one. I just saw the movie too--loved it. (But I'm a sucker for vivien leigh...and hot young marlon brando). I play tennis, snowboard, try to run...don't have enough motivation, though I wish I did.
Jack Kerouac is my hero; I love the beat age. On the Road, Naked Lunch, Howl and some other Ginsberg poems, and half of the Dharma Bums are all I've read so far.
I have no idea what I want to do when I get out of high school. Go to college for sure. The only other thing I know is that I do NOT want to be in debt afterwards like my sister is. I want to be able to be free afterwards. I pretty much just want to travel around, live in Paris, Rio, anywhere, and write. Thats pretty much my passon. So there you go, me in a nutshell.
Hi, Wow there are some really interesting people on here. I joined to try and find some answers for my daughter about a Leonid Andreyev play called The Serpents Tale ( We have no idea what the character is talking about. Do you ?). Anyway I am glad I did. I like to read a variety of genres and authors but my favourites would be Kurt Vonnegut and Gabrielle Garcia Marquez. (did I spell that correctly) Nothing alike I know, but for me it is not about the style more how the book makes me feel.
About me
1. australian
2. Mother and wife
3. love holidays
Nothing exciting but I am happy with life.;)
Welcome fozta, Cartier, Ellissa and all the other newbies. I hope you will like lit net. I think it's a great place to discuss literature.
I joined some time ago, but this is my first post.
I'm 20, halfway thru London Uni External Programme BA in English, hated books till I was about 10 - wasted time, because now there's this feeling that there's not enough time to just read! At the moment, just started Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club.
@fozta: It's Gabriel... the masculine form. :) My sis is totally into his works! She just finished 100 Years in Solitude and is eyeing Of Love and Other Demons. As for me, I only read his short story, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings.
@tyeness: I am currently into Amy Tan's The Kitchen God's Wife. I must say I am still overwhelmed with the story and I find it hard to finish it! The sufferings and hardship portrayed there... o.o
Hi there all, and welcome.
