August / Japan Reading Poll

Well, I've conceded and gone for Kafka on the Shore. I've read it before but I'm thinking I'd definitely like to read it again, though it isn't my favourite (but it's better than Norweigian Wood ;) ). Can't let the Mishima book win out. I watched a programme about Murakami a couple of weeks go, and Mishima's militarism was what Murakami's writing was very much against, pushing for a more liberal approach in Japan. I've read Kafka On the Shore before, wouldn't say I loved it (maybe it was the translation) but would like to read it again like TheFifthElement to get more out of it. Not sure what Norwegian Wood would be like, they don't have it over here anyway.

He's the ideal person to have seated next to you in a very long wedding party. :p

Even if I wouldn't mind re-reading Kafka on the shore, I must say that I'll mentally support (I still can't vote:blush: ) Norwegian Wood (by sending convincing vibes to voters :alien: )

I hope that it will not be 'Kafka on the Shore' because I already read it. Liked it very much even though it was so strange. Perhaps I'll reread it if it wins.

OOOoooo Japanese literature. Having been caught up somewhat in French Lit (from the April poll.. then from the summer reading list) I feel compelled to leave France. I have always wanted to delve into asian liturature.. but didn't know where to start. I am still making my decision.. teetering from Spring Snow and Norwegien Wood. Having just finished The Count of Monte Cristo, I am glad Tales of Genji is NOT one of the choices. While I enjoy long books most certainly, I feel the need for something a little shorter and lighter. I think I will keep an eye on how the poll goes.. and make my final decision.

This is my first post (just found this site) and I hope I'm not overstepping any boundries here. I'd love to tag along with you in August with whatever Japanese novel your book club chooses. As a Beatles/John Lennon fan the title "Norwegian Wood" appeals to me :), but know nothing about any of the books listed and I am not familiar with Japanese literature at all. I also realize I am not entitled to vote yet...I would love to join you in the plunge into any title the club chooses, if you will have me.

Well Scheherazade, I took your advice and posted my vote. One more for Norweigen Wood (ok, so I think I spelled it wrong.. super tired). Puts us one more ahead.

I like to go against the grain anyway.. I have seen a lot of "talk" about Kafka on the Shore. While I am sure it is a good read, I like non pop culture, off the beaten path stuff. Since I never heard of Norwiegen Wood other than the editorials I read about it and others on the list... It got my vote.


Come on Everyone! 7 more days to go! (or somewhere therabouts):thumbs_up

Victoria - You need fifty posts to vote. You can go to the gams section and easily get fifty posts. Then come back here and vote for Kafka. :D
