Language doesn't just persuade us, which seems to be the view which Virgil has taken; it also constitutes and shapes the very way in which we think (ie, we think through language) and therefore effects how we behave. Having said that, the relationship is incredibly complex and to say that 'language controls us' or that 'we control language', is both, I think, an over-simplification. It is as much social relations as language; social relations are reflected in language, which in turn effect social relations.
