That's funny that you mention Hawthorne in that connection, as he essentially was that ideal reader for Herman Melville.
Well, my understanding is that he coined the phrase - which I believe a prof confirmed one day by asking the class and, when I put this forward, answering in the affirmative.
I really doubt anyone said it before, simply because I think it's not true. I hold that a person is dying nonstop, and that there is nothing that doesn't in some sense contribute to killing a person. Don't you? :p
