On the subject of being a man.........

There are some ways that being a man is great (Scher mentioned most of them :D ), but we have social pressures tied to us too.

Firstly, why is generally taken as the man's responsibility to approach the woman? Do you enjoy watching us stumbling over words, trying to sound witty and intelligent, & then make a fool of ourselves?

Why do men have to pay when you go on a date? especially if I eat next to nothing, and the date forces food into her mouth like there is no tomorrow?

Why do you expect us to be able to fix things? Some guys I know cant do a thing, however they pretend to able to to fit society's idea....this is how most DIY projects end up failing (it's not that they dont want to follow the intructions - they in fact cant understand them!)

By the way, Scher missed one thing off her list:
When asked a question ..... never admit to not knowing the answer, this is especially true to when being given directions. Even if you have never heard of the place smile confidently and launch into a rapid speech (using hand gestures) insisting on a lot of left and right turns and approximate distances. If you can use bars or sport arenas as identifying landmarks.

LOL guys, I'm wordless with laughter...

Just a few comments... ihrocks, I dont want to be a man with wife and children... I just want to be a guy in his 20s...so Scher's advice actually fitted better...

Kilted well... I dont know why I assume it's a man who should do the first step (when I'm female that is ;)) but I'm absolutely bored of doing it myself!!! As for paying, well I dotn know but it feels good, at a first date at least...then I'd feel guilty about letting the guy pay at 35th date... (notice my use of the conditional tense).

Sometimes I joke about being a 'manly woman'... I mean, apart from my inability with driving and parking, and my inobservance (so far :D) of Scher's rules, I'm more male than any girl I know... I have to approach boys instead of being approached, I'm not afraid of coming home alone even when it's dark, I travel alone, I go to the toilet alone :D ... But sometimes I see a bunch of boys and I wonder how it'd be to be one of them... it's not so much about equality anyway, but it is really a question of how it feels...

Nightshade, thanks for the best wishes for exams, I did pretty well today as well :D Well maybe mostly cos the teacher loves me cos I was the only one bothering to go to her lessons...
Strangely, I don't need an exam wish for tomorrow... keep one for Friday tho :D

It feels...relaxed and very random, that's all it is.

Being a man is THIS!!!! being a woman is THAT!!!! Heheheh.....I laugh in your general direction........Ha!!!

You guys (.......hehehe) are completely off of the mark. Sure, there are men (and women) who are not only the template for what the media and social structure dictate as typical gender, but one or two people that each of us knows personally are probably THE idyllic worst examples!!!!

This is what a man really is: thoughtful, kind hearted to the needy and marginalized, generally hard working, fun loving, funny, creative, soft hearted underneath the cool facade, seeking enlightenment because of a need to understand deeper meanings-as a reason to exist, expanding horizons as opportunities present themselves, a bit of a risk taker, lover of poetry-flowers-sunsets-beer-fine wines-good food, continiously widening circle of friends, champion of children, a good cook, hygenic,fixer of ANYTHING needing fixing (at least willing to try), admitter of personal faults, frisbee throwing-golfing-softball-volleyball-playing good sport.....and I will continue if prodded.........

But really, I could be listing qualities of either gender.

And pointing out the extremes of any contrast of view is counterproductive.....it really only enhances and perpetuates the very things we are trying to eradicate on this little blue ball we call home. Except for the most worse examples of humankind, men and women are not all that different from each other. It is only the expounding on the obvious differences, and pointing out what each gender sees as flaws in the other that creates the fog of misunderstanding occasionly disrupting a clear view of each other......

my random thought is... it's weird, when i am on msn messenger talking with people i've first met in real life, i always seem to be the only one using lost of smilies...most of them dont ever use one... i guess it's because i'm used to online communication with people i actually dont know, and got used to a massive use of smilies... :banana:

Interesting question, Nightshade. Can a human necessarily perceive objectively, in the first place? Perhaps by perceiving something from multiple perspectives (in an analytical and holistic manner) would get one closer to objectivity, as you asked "be distanced from it," but, as Immanuel Kant and Rene Descartes would reply, the senses have many faults, and as one person would distinguish red and orange, a color-blind person would call them the same.
