1844 - A new religion forms when a group of Methodists in New England decide that the meaning of the prophecies of Danial 8 and 9 mean that the End of Time will come on October 22, 1844. The Lord didn't come but the religion continues to this day.

Family cat leaves law practice to run for public office in the hopes of sponsoring Feline Rights legislation.

1853 January 6 - American President-Elect Franklin Pierce, wife Jane, and son Ben are involved in a train wreck near Andover, Massachusetts. Franklin and Jane survive but eleven-year-old Ben is killed. (Thought I'd put this fact up, since most Americans if asked who Franklin Pierce was would answer "Who?")
1854
I knew that. But for that matter, many americans are not able to say what year 9/11 took place in.

The Lincoln-Douglas Debates of 1858

Although Lincoln lost the election, these debates launched him into national prominence which eventually led to his election as President of the United States.
(Sorry if I always sound like a History Book. But "Those that cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.")
1859 - September 28 - Henry I of England defeats his older brother Robert Curthose, duke of Normandy, at the Battle of Tinchebrai, and imprisons him in Devizes castle; Edgar Atheling and William Clito are also taken prisoner.
We will soon have to change to ab urbe condita or other calendars that are not based on the year that Christ supposedly was born on (but most probably didn't)
Some people we know, for example, sometimes use a calendar that states the present year to be 10219, since it is believed that about so many years ago, ice melted in Danish straits enough that the water could break through, the Baltic Ice lake turned into Yoldia sea, which resulted in a rapid change of the sea level in very short time. It is possible that human eyes saw that process.
1860 - November 11, 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected President of the United States with 180 out of 303 electoral votes and 40% of the popular vote.
1861 May 8 - American Civil War: Richmond, Virginia is named the capital of the Confederate States of America.
And truly ironic, since today most Southern people think that Virginia ends at Roanoke and above that is Yankee territory!
1862 - The Civil War continues. . . .
1863
The Northern Family Cat perishes in a ghastly heroic battle against a tribe of Southern rats.
