Bloody
Bloody: in Brit English, a mild swear-word, as all Americans are aware. This proves especially useful to any second-rate American actor required to play an Englishman in a US sitcom, because when his accent caroms wildly around the English-speaking world, from Australia to South Africa to Barbados to colonial Hong Kong, and despite the fact that when he homes in on these sceptered isles, it would appear that he grew up simultaneously in Liverpool, Cardiff, London, Newcastle and at Eton, his frequent inclusion of the word 'bloody' - however contextually incongruous - does at least help us to understand that his character is supposed to be from that place with the Queen, which means we can wearily steel ourselves for the inevitable gags about redcoats and fish'n'chips and bad teeth.
