Hi all! I'm Dorinda, and I live in the States (Georgia, to be precise.)

Hi dorinda, welcome to the forums. I recommend the book club to you. I hope that you too enjoy the forums as much as I.

Hello everyone!
My name is Afraa, and I'm new here.
I'm from Saudi Arabia. (I know: a place of big question mark, right?).
Despite where I am from, literature is my admiration! I hope to share it with everyone around here.
:)
Hello, my name is Joao Camilo, I am from Brasil.
By the way, with time you will perceive that the notion that I write in english is false. I do not. It is a trick I use, be warned.
Hello to all the newbies! I hope you're enjoying the site :)
JCamilo, there are many here who do not use English as their first language, you can check out more in the "Is English your first language...." topic

Indeed, there are many members from China. Apple Jiang is one, she is the only member I can think of off the top of my head. I don't really pay attention to geograhic locations all that much.
Anway, welcome.
I haven't been a part of an internet forum in a long while, and when I saw this I got excited. The forums here look wonderful.
But anyway, I'm a Brazilian living and studying (for the time being) in Texas.
So... Hello!
Got it~Thank you guys !Both of you are kind!~~I mean Kathy and 6~~

Hey! I am blackfox. I am new here. You can send me message.
This is my first post. I'm having trouble navigating this site - maybe I'm stupid, or perhaps it is too easy - I read Victorian Lit. Anyway, I'm looking forward to joining in the forums.
Welcome Missing Sock! I really love your name :D Very cute. If youre interested in reading, this is certainly the place to come!
Welcome blackfox! Welcome geliot!

Hi I'm new here~ and so looking forward to this...
My name is Nyla, am 18 years old, and a Korean American tryna get some help with literature in general~
Hi, I'm new to the literature network; I enjoyed taking the quizzes and reading a few of the posts. I'm looking forward to some interesting conversations. My avatar is a sternwheeler because I am obsessed with the history of Western Canada {my home and native land]. In particular the history of the era of rail construction, and during this period sternwheelers played a huge role.
I love reading, of course or I wouldn't be here.
Welcome little wing, nyla, and cindybo!
Hi! Lyn, older than I wish I was, Scottish living in England. I love early sci fi, the classics, poetry. I went to uni in Scotland and studied Scottish Literature and pscyhology. I'm really interested when the two topics meet, so love psychological novels. No-one around me reads..... I need someone to talk to about books so was totally chuffed when I found this site!
Hi Lyn! I too love psychology! :D Welcome to the site!
DID SOMEONE SAY SCI-FI?! Even better, early sci fi.
Aw, I know how you feel about feeling left out because no one around you reads. In fact, probably most of us can empathize with you. Well, this is Lit Net, so you won't feel left out here!
So, all in all, hello and welcome!
Hey. I'm Aaron from Indiana. Partay!
Hi. I'm Joey, also from that infamous land of corn, Indiana. I can empathize with you as well, Lyn. No one that I am around outside of my lit. classes reads as I do. It can be kind of depressing. I'm reading Blake and Wordsworth right now, but I prefer early modern novels. Also classical Greek and Roman along with some Germanic folklore. Thanx for the forum!
Its so good to find folks that sympathise. One of my work collegues said to me the other day, 'What you actually go home, pick up a book and read poems for fun????' in an incredulous tone of voice. Yes, yes I do. Am slightly scared that someone thinks that's weird. Forums like these are good because there's bound to be someone who's read at least one of the books I witter on about. Currently reading Valis by Phillip K Dick. I've recently been converted to the wonders of sciffy, having been a die hard classicist before. I didn't realise how diverse the genre was. I love anything that messes with me head and makes me think.
Early sci-fi? How early is early sci-fi?
Even if you like Dostoevsky more than Le Guin (which is sacrilege in my world :|), welcome aboard. :) There are few novels trippier than Dick's stuff and Valis is probably the trippiest of 'em all.
If you like sci-fi, you should probably read the Martian Chronicles by...well isn't that embarrassing. I cannot for the life of me remember his name. Could someone help me out?
Ray Bradbury. :)
I'll definitely have a look at Bradbury again. By early I just mean I tried to start with the 'classics' whatever they might be. So HG Wells, Huxley. I love the scifi masterworks series, Fahrenheit 451, Behold the man, Dancers at the end of time, Man Plus, Flowers for Algernon, More than Human, Shrinking Man, I am Legend, PKD, etc. I haven't tried Arthur C Clarke yet, should I bother? Sorry bout Dostoevsky. Tis the fault of my indoctrination by my hideously prejudiced education. And I read the Double which is just weirdly brilliant. Im trying to broaden me horizons. Got any more recommendations of classic, decent, scifi?
illustrator man, ray bradbury...didn't he write that...it was scarey...
Lyn,
Sure, I happen to love sci-fi and the more sf fans, the merrier.
Frederik Pohl's 'Gateway,' Hal Clement's 'Mission of Gravity,' Frank Herbert's 'Dune,' Arthur C. Clarke's '2001: A Space Odyssey', 'Rendezvous with Rama,' and 'Childhood's End,' Ursula Le Guin's 'The Left Hand of Darkness,' and 'The Dispossessed,' Robert Silverberg's 'Dying Inside,' and 'The Book of Skulls,' George Stewart's 'Earth Abides,' John Wyndham's 'The Day of the Triffids,' and 'The Chrysalids,' Walter M. Miller's 'A Canticle for Leibowitz,' Alfred Bester's 'The Stars My Destination,' and Thomas Disch's 'Camp Concentration,' are all excellent novels in their own way.
As far as short stories go, and it can be argued that a well written sf short story is often more effective and spectecular than a full blown novel, anything by James P. Tiptree, Cordwainer Smith, Clifford Simak, Theodore Sturgeon and Harlan Ellison's early is worth reading. The first two and Sturgeon is particular are unrivalled in the craft of short story IMO.
Some less well known, but almost equally good in many cases, names are Tom Reamy, Norman Spinard, Jack Vance, Fritz Leiber and Brian Aldiss.
If I were asked to recommend one, and only one, sf author I'd put up Le Guin's name.
Many thanks for the list. I'll definitely look some of those up and have a read. :)
Hi. I'm Sarah. I just stumbled onto this site looking for info on a book. It looks pretty interesting. I've had a great time reading through some of the threads so far.
