It was published in 1884 -- and depicts a time before the Civil War. It is probably set in the era of Clemens' childhood, in the 1840s -- 40 years prior to the novel's publication. "War and Peace: was published only 50 years after the era it depicts.
"The Good Lord Bird" is a historical novel in that it features real-life people: John Brown, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman and others. "Finn" does not.
