Ghostbusters- always good, a classic and I just love Bill Murray!
So I watched this film called 'Zombieland' last night on LoveFilm and it was supposed to be a 'Comedy' and I didn't laugh once, I promise you. I looked at the reviews on the internet this morning and I'm astonished that it has so much critical and commercial praise.
What am I missing? The two female characters were shallow and almost like charicatures, and the same was the case for the male lead (the older one with the guns) blah blah blah that's the same for a lot of films. I couldn't really establish a plot, probably because there were times when the characters ran back into where the zombies were and did some truly rediculous things to get themselves back into trouble, so I couldn't really view it as a survival horror/comedy where they were running for their lives. The violence was just...not really neccessary, though I've seen way worse. It was just odd.
Another thing I noted was that it made fun of zombie-movie cliches (the Rules of survival etc.) and yet consciously used a number of cliches in the plot. The cameo of Bill Murray is sad because he's just a washed up actor now.
I think I watched it hoping it would be a clever and sophisticated comedy with slapstick etc. but the violence was just macabre and not used for any satirical purposes in my opinion. I think it was more like Rob Zombie's House of a 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects, and Natural Born Killers.
Anway, I won't be watching it again for a revised opinion.
I went to the the movies and saw "The Iron Lady" starring Meryl Streep, she played a wonderful role, although I felt the movie dwelled too much on Thatcher's dementian ithat she developed in her later years, other than that 8/10 from me.
Last night I watched another of Streep's movies on DVD "Doubt" 10/10.

Another Earth
This is a sci-fi film with no name actors about a high school grad who causes a car accident that kills a family, and she tries to atone for the deaths when she gets out of prison. At the time of the event, another planet similar to earth was discovered - in fact it was like a mirror earth - or another earth (which is the name of the movie). It was okay - there were a lot of new agey ideas that found their way into the dialogue. There was mention of Plato's allegory of the cave, questions about the nature of reality etc etc - all woven into the story. I came home from work, I was dead tired, it was on and I watched it.
I watch "Plath" starring Gwyneth Paltrow. She did a good job with Sylvia Plath and so did Daniel Craig as Ted Hughes. 8/10
finished Firefly yesterday and just watched Serenity.
Great movie 9/10 one minus cause it's one of two movies that have a scene that make me very angry at Whedon, saying it would be a huge spoiler but I am pretty sure that if you've seen it you know what I mean.
We watched Midnight in Paris last night. I loved it! It was funny and poignant, and made fun of Hollywood - great music, cast, and just a fun watch. It was nice to watch a film with no violence. And my favorite writer (Fitzgerald) was in it. I will give it a 9
A stupid timewaster called Dragonball Evolution. Well it was on in the background at least and I was only vaguely aware of it. The reason it was on at all is the director used to be interesting but he's gone downhill something rotten of late. The script was amateurish and the plot unbelievably contrived - seemed to have beeen written to fill itself in.
'Hey - let's put on show!'
'You mean make a movie..?'
'Or a movie...'
'Cool. What'll it'll be about?
'Who cares! We'll just make it up as we go along!'
'What'll be the hook to get people to watch it?'
'Um, explosions, special effects and-... how about Kung Fu!?'
'Kung Fu?'
'Yeah - and an evil demon who wants to take over the world and something about dragons because I like dragons.'
'I like dragons too.'
'Are we agreed we all like dragons?'
'All we need is some investment money and we'll be set!'
'I know a producer who likes dragons...'
'Excellent - we're halfway there!'
The Avengers - 8/10, Fun, mindless entertainment.
I saw the Avengers with my friend who hadn't seen all the other movies and knew little about them, during the break I tried to explain all the connections between the movies and the Tesserac and why Banner is Hulk and that Stark's dad knew Rogers and in Iron man II he looks at his dads diary and sees drawings of the tesserac. It's all connected. I was also looking for some 'Whedon actors' cameo. After going on about this for about 5 minuets I realized the people around me were all quiet, now that shut me up.
After the movie I heard some guys talking about Bana as the first Hulk and I just thougth to myself 'jerks' and started explaining loudly to my friend how Lou Ferriggino was Hulk years ago and still is credited as him in all Hulk movies, cause he talks for him.
OK now I have babbled on about this in a rate a movie thread so I am gonna shut up and talk to myself. but you should see the these movies 'Thor' and 'Captain America' are very very good.
I watched The Rescuers Down Under with my nieces yesterday. 7/10
