Very nice too and from a time when the US was No.1 on the export table: it's not difficult to make the connection. I was listening to Paul McCartney on the radio a couple of days ago and he was saying that people like Jerome Kern and Cole Porter knew how to write wonderful songs and great lyrics. It's taken him over 60 years to find out. Duh!

Wow! When I saw the post I figured that had to be Marcus Miller on bass, but it's a guy named Tom Barney. Never heard of him, but he acquitted himself well. (btw, can't help but add something with Miles Davis--another guy who turned to Marcus often to help shape his sound in the 80's, not to mention Luther Vandross. The clip's from Sanborn's TV show!)

I always like some Sanborn (despite the scourge of limp and sober money-seeking sax-men that arose in his wake). Here's him doing something lovely but downbeat from this next woman all of this has led my nostalgic wanderings to. Uh, next link is Sade doing a different song ("No Ordinary Love" on my browser now...), sorry for whatever confusion...

Good stuff Billl. I didn't even pick up that wasn't Marcus on Chicago Song. I didn't notice the credit. Yeah, Barney played pretty good.

As to Marcus, he's outstanding. I just checked his age and he's just a couple of years older than me. That means he was 22 when he was playing with Miles, Wow. You might like this interview that was beside the Miles video:

Thanks for the tip, I did like that--it provides some insight into their relationship, I think (but I still have questions). As you point out, Marcus was so young then, but played such an important role, eventually ending up as producer for a lot of the 80's Miles output. (My favorite is still the Man With The Horn album, though. Worth checking out if you like Marcus Miller.)
