Hot Tub Time Machine

You can't always judge a movie by it's title.

You'd think that a movie called "Hot Tub Time Machine" would be terrible beyond imagination. The previews did nothing to help matters and seemed to confirm that the movie would be as bad the title suggests. Needless to say, I had no desire to watch this movie. I saw that John Cusak had a role in it, and I have always liked John Cusak, but I still didn't want to watch it. The mere thought of watching a movie called "Hot Tub Time Machine" was repugnant to me. But I did end up watching it and that was just because my husband had acquired the movie. It was playing and I was walking through the den and then somehow I was watching it - I was sitting in a recliner and actually watching a movie called Hot Tub Time Machine. And I was liking it. Yes, there are some stupid parts, and it's definitely not something you'd want to be watching while the kiddies are around, but it has its moments.

Maybe I just liked it because I am fascinated with the idea of fate and time travel. Or maybe I just like absurd comedies. Or maybe I liked it because this movie is the first time travel comedy I've ever seen. In any case, I liked the movie and after watching it, I could almost forgive the title

Do you know how many times I've picked up that movie and put it back down? I pick it up because of Cusak and put it down because of the title.:p

Last night I watched Piano Tuner of Earthquakes by the Brothers Quay for the second time. I f'n' love the Brothers Quay.

I watched the French film The Exterminating Angels on Saturday. The enjoyment I got from it was only because it was very erotic but it was not a very good movie at all. However it had a metafictional element that I appreciate. I'd give it a 5.

I also watched Death Wish with Charles Bronson again recently. Awesome.

Oh yeah, I'm ashamed to say I saw Battle: LA yesterday. 4.

Last night I watched the British horror film Mum & Dad. Pretty decent. Bored me at times but over all it was a good watch. It had some pretty nice disgusting scenes.

Last night I saw Paul with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. I was waiting to see it on a bad day. I knew it would make me feel better so I thought I should see it when I needed it. Yesterday was that day. I wasn't very upset but upset enough.* And I was right that it would make me feel better. Those two are so fun to watch there is almost nothing better. I liked the stuff directed by Edgar Wright more but this was still great because of Pegg and Frost.

* It didn't help that on the subway home I ended up sitting next to this f'n' guy who kept singing along to some sh!tty R&B like he was trying to be discovered by a producer on public transportation. I was glad to get off that and get to my bus... until I discovered that I ended up standing next to the very same bastard for most of that crowded bus trip.

Battle LA was pretty awful, it has littler redeemable value.

Last movie I saw was Hobo With a Shotgun, a splatter film, pretty funny in the cheesy way those films are, some surprisingly clever moments. Over the top violence. I'll give it a 7/10.

The Ladies Man

It was pretty funny if you don't mind rude crude and socially unacceptable.

I really don't know how to rate this movie on a normal movie scale.

But on the "Stupid Movie Scale" I would give it a 7.

Last night I watched Mighty Aphrodite, great stuff, really funny.

papaya, I love the Thin Man movies! I didn't think anyone else had discovered them. I must see this one. Thanks for you description. I will have to find it. I would really love to buy the boxed set. They are such fun!

Are you able to enjoy The Thin Man in movie form after reading the book? I haven't seen the movie but after reading The Maltese Falcon, watching the movie was a letdown.

I watched The Social Network last night. 6. It wasn't bad but Sorkin's dialogue style irritates me. And the movie started getting boring after a while. With a half hour left I just stopped caring altogether.

Amarcord by Fellini. Fantastic and hilarious. 9.7
