I haven't seen the film but HB won an academy Award for his part in it. Apparently, John Huston kept disappearing to go hunting during the filming and the original choice of the lead roles was David Niven and Bette Davis, so it's surprising that it turned out as well as the critics said. KH is said to have based her role on Eleanor Roosevelt which, judging from excerpts I've seen, certainly figures. I guess the corny and unrealistic moments are best summed up in the publicity for the film, such as:
