Hi Everyone,
I am a postal worker who loves to read books and poetry. Last week I started taking online classes for poetry and writing. I also dabble in poetry writing, along with short stories. Hoping to gain the confidence to put my work out in the world. I am learning to love exercising, and playing sports and enjoying life.
I am laid up here at Durban with the pain in my left leg. Ever since that confounded lion got hold of me I have been liable to this trouble, and its being rather bad just now makes me limp more than ever. There must be some poison in a lion's teeth, otherwise how is it that when your wounds are healed they break out again, generally, mark you, at the same time of year that you got your mauling? It is a hard thing when one has shot sixty-five lions and more, as I have in the course of my life, that the sixty-sixth should chew your leg like a quid of tobacco. It breaks the routine of the thing, and putting other considerations aside, I am an orderly man and don't like that. This is by the way.
So,, i came to this website to discuss books in preparation for my english class.
my goal is to get a better understanding of literature so that i can become a more articulate writer. i am in 11th grade now, and my writing isnt bad. but its not perfect. my biggest flaw is not being clear enough. i'm good at developing insights/ideas, but the way i put them down on paper is often ambiguous and too confusingly worded.
writing is a very important skill to master. plus i love to analyze literature. its wat i do.

Hello! I'm new here. I joined because I needed a place to go to talk and read about literature. I am currently a college student but I am tired of taking all of these lit electives where nobody actually reads the material or takes discussions seriously. Hopefully my inner lit nerd can roam freely around here! :)
Some of my favorite writers are poets because I am in love with poetry. Sylvia Plath really awakened this passion in me and now I love poets such as Margaret Atwood, Richard Brautigan, Charles Bukowski, Frank O'Hara and much more! As for prose, I am in love with the way Anaïs Nin writes. I'm also kind of going through an Oscar Wilde phase right now, haha. Some more contemporary writers that I like are Haruki Murakami and some older Palahniuk stuff (but not so much his newer writing). My 12th grade English class made me love existential themes in writing so I also have love for Camus and Hesse among many, many others!
Lately I have been making more of an effort to read regularly: at least one book a week. I've really been into short stories lately. Right now I'm reading a short story collection by D.H. Lawrence and I just finished one by F. Scott Fitzgerald. So far, so good!
I write poetry myself, but I also want to get into writing short stories or maybe something even longer. I will probably be posting often in the poetry forum! I can't wait~!

Hello there, I'm a brand new member and very excited about discussing literature!!
I'm studying English language and literature, and as you can understand I read A LOT poetry, prose, theatrical plays and everything of the kind!!
I also write short stories (very amateur, really but I hope I'll get to a higher level :P ) and I start making my first moves to poetry(not very successful moves, indeed !)
As for my favorite writers...uhmmm... they are so many... Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, E.A. Poe, Jane Austen, Eugene Ionesco, H. Melville, Leo Tolstoy, Albert Camus, Guy de Maupassant, and many many others!!
That's briefly the literary me!
At the moment I'm reading Ionesco's "Rhinoceros" and I find it very interesting in all perspectives! Any suggestions are welcomed! :-)

I'm open to all kinds of recommendations on reading, writing and music. I know music is irrelevant but still :P I'm in highschool and I want to study physics. :)

I came here as the result of a Google search looking for sources of reflection on how individuals heal from the effects of bleak poverty. I was guided to this source and a wonderful essay which included his quote:

Good evening everyone! I discovered this wonderful forum while I was looking for some new books to read, and I just thought I had to join cause all of the amazing threads it has. My name is Diego and I'm a 17-year old Costa Rican. I do not remember when was it the first time I actually enjoyed reading, I think it was since my mom gave birth to me and I saw the newsspaper near her hospital bed :yesnod:
It has been a while since I became a vegetarian, also because of the many articles I have read about the positive changes I have now experimented. I love animals, and I'm obsessed with a Song of Ice and Fire (although for me the 2nd and 3rd books are the best so far) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But I read almost everything even the boring books I have to for school. Anyway I'm happy to have discovered this wonderful community... but can someone help me unify my username into one word please? :mad2:
PD: I'm still looking for a good book to buy, I would like it to be vintage, Tolstoy maybe? Is there a thread about this kind of issues

Thank you for allowing me the honor of joining this fine forum.
I owe literature a great deal. Having had to live as a young child working throughout regional Australia, I did not have the advantage of attending school. I did attent until I was 8, so spent about 3 years at primary. I loved history books and read what I could.
When in my mid teens I moved to the city and began reading everything I could. I realised my ignorance and books became my school.
I am now 48 years old.
Being one to study basics, I decided the best way to read would be to start at the beginning. So I read the Greeks, the Romans etc and continued through modern times.
Very exciting.
I live in Sydney Australia. I do what I love as my career. Never married. And I am still reading.
