300 was incredible!! I loved it. It's about 300 Spartans taking on the Persian army and ow they inspired the rest of the Grecians to do the same. SSOOO GOOOOD!!

Yes, the painting is called Metamorphosis of Narcissus. It's my fav of Dali's works. Please do send me the link! I've only seen his works once in person at the museum in Florida. I was kind of disappointed, as they didn't have much. A firend of mine saw the largets display of Dali's works in the world in Spain. I would love to see it, along with the rest of Spain, someday.

Thanks for all your diggin around Janine!! I found it also- he layed King Lear for the National Theatre under director David Hare in December 1986 (before I was even born haha). I also found some pictures from the performance, but no taping thus far. :bawling:

I thought you would find stuff out about the play, but unlikely you will find it filmed in it's entirety. Picture stills are nice to have. I have the same frustrations sometimes hunting for things. I bought Al Pacino's tape (could not get the DVD, too expensive) "Finding Richard". It is rather interesting - he goes about asking people on the street about Shakespeare - their responses sometimes are really funny. Anyway, seems Pacino has a fascination with "King Richard III", so he and a theater group performed it in Central Park, New York. The play exerpts are the best part, but since it was put on as a play, I doubt there is any full-length movie - a pitty since it is quite good, what I saw of it. I think he actually fit the role of the villianous Richard quite well. It is funny because right now I have been listening to the Naxos CD set of the play with Branagh playing Richard. Now this is a role that really is the comsumate villian and trickster. He does a good job going from sweet and pleasant to outright villianous. The transition is interesting to listen to in his voice.

Now. I recall "300" was about the Spartans - actually I was half and half on whether I would like it. I like epics if they are really well done. My friend did tell me the special effects were incredible. It is from the quote: "Into the valley of death road the 300.

Give 300 a try- it's very diferent from the usual epics. It was filmed entirely in front of green screens, and the quality it gives the film is just gorgeous. it's like watching a painting move.

I saw another film like that - it was a French film with subtiles about the French Revolution period. I can't recall the name of it. I lose track of all the films I watch. For a time I was keeping a list but I got lax about it and now I have lost track again. This film looked just like beautiful paintings. I am an artist, so I really appreciate things like that. I was fascinated with the backgrounds. They wanted the streets to look not quite real because you were escaping back in time. I did feel like I was in a time machine or walked right into the painting in a museum. You might know the film I am talking about.
Now I can't wait to see the 300. I must try to see it in a theater, too, on a large screen.

I just saw "Freedom Writer's".I thought it was really good.I went with my cousin and she cried and said it was one of the best movies she ever saw.(I didn't cry,but my sister did.It wasn't that sad.)Anyone else see it?What did you think?

Bad-boy Paul Newman as "Hud" -- shot in black & white, strong performances.

El Postino -- pleasant story about Pablo Neruda and his mailman.

I saw 'Wild Hogs,' in the theatre today. Quite funny, good for entertainment, a very nice performance by Ray Liotta actually and a nice cameo by Peter Fonda. 7/10.

I saw '300' last night, and I was totally blown away. It was unlike any movie I have ever seen before in my life. I loved it! The cinematography was just gorgeous! I do have to say that I was not impressed with the sex scene(s). (second one wasn't quite as bad) I thought it was totally unnecessary to be quite that explicit. It was borderline pornography and could have been handled with a little more tact. Other than that I have to say, hands down, the most fun I have had watching people die, ever! And the eye-candy, Lord have mercy! Gerard Butler and David Wenham were smokin'! It was intense and dramatic and weird and scary, and just plain fun. I'll have to give it an 8/10.

This movie has some of the longest single-take shots I've ever seen (outside of, say, the full-length single-shot in "Russian Ark"), and they work very well. Apparently, the leads (middle-aged college professor and younger TV producer girlfriend) are played by the director and his wife, and some Turkish people seem to think he's an outrageously bad actor; but with subtitles one doesn't seem to notice such things so much. There is not a great deal of dialogue, and, consequently, this film contains some of the best "face-acting" I've witnessed. The young woman's silent emotional shift at the beginning (perhaps while reflecting on the man's past affair with another woman?) is quite impressive, as are the lengthy scenes in which nearly everything in the way of communication between the characters is conveyed through their eyes and faces. Supposedly, the climate at different periods is supposed to function as a metaphor for what's taking place in the man's head - if not those of both characters. It isn't a very...um, traditional correlation, though.

I dug it.

I'm not a fan of watching movies, but if Toni and Lain says that they're very nice and very good, I watch it. I don't know the face of Dennis Quaid, or what Ray Liotta looks like. I'm dumb when it comes to movies, but don't underestimate me when it comes to H.P. series..... hehe. :idea: :idea:

Morgan Freeman on fire in "Lean On Me." A bit Hollywoodized, but Freeman is really energetic, one-track mind.

Jamesian, the way you describe this movie with long takes and the closeup acting interests me. I love close up face and expression shots. I saw "Russian Ark" and was quite impressed with the fact it was all done in one continuous take - what a achievement. The film gave me chills, seeing the children all dressed in white playing around the house like normal children would, and then to think of what their final fate was. It was sad. The entire lush setting was wonderful to view. Visually, one of the loviliest films I have ever seen.
As to "Climates" - I know nothing about his film. What is it about? Can you give us a bit of the storyline to whet our interests? Is it a foreign (I am in US) or English film - what country?

Thanks Niamh, I have been in major pain - killer swore throat and congestion. Today I have a doctor appointment. I could not sleep, so I did watch a movie last night. I had seen it before but I really like it.
"A River Runs Through It" Directed by Robert Redford.
Yes, it is about fly-fishing - how exciting can that be right? But the film is about a lot more than that, about a family of two boys quite different from each other. It is a coming of age, family ties sort of film and has a lot of feeling and heart and interesting characters. The area of Montana on the river where some of the film takes place is magnificent. Makes one want to go there. Plus it is a period piece and will take you back to a different era of speak easys and prohibition, slower life styles and close friends one grew up with. Very Americana, but realistic. I like the simple, but sensitive narration by Robert Redford. This film has a few surprises in it. It is somewhat slowpaced, but lovely and meaningful, with good closeup shots of the actors faces and expressions. Humor is sprinkled throughout and some scenes are quite funny. Brad Pitt is so handsome, actually beautiful in this film, standing in the bright sunlight of the river. He was younger and it is quite a different role than his meatier ones playing in "Troy" and "12 Monkeys". I like his character very much, because it keeps you wondering. He has some very good subtle facial expressions and you can't help but like him, or even love him, as his brother does. The film is about the ties that bind and the relationship of two brothers to sum it all up. I loved the ending....very profound...be sure and listen to the words. You need to listen to all the narration, as it is a key element in the film. I would give it a 10/10, but that is my own individual taste and preference. I enjoyed it after seeing it several times. I had been thinking about the film and wanting to watch it again of late. Glad I did.

I think Johnny Depp gives an amazing performance, as usual..I think he is a gifted actor and this is the first time in his career that it really shows.. I give it 10 out of 10... Love, Love , Love it

It was so silly, but it is fun and the giant is interesting - that is Andre the Giant - he was famous, but is now deceased. He is also in 'Big Fish". I saw a special program about him. I guess the only reason why I enjoyed this film so much is the fact that it is so unexpected.. a breathe of fresh air, much like Little Miss Sunshine,etc...I think you should give it another go, though I am aware my taste in film is much differant than other people...hope you like it :yawnb:

Domer, Yes, everyone raves over this film. I must give it another go. It was funny to me in parts but sometimes too much funny stuff gets tiresome to me. I know it was well done and everything. One of these days I will watch again. I don't care to watch "Little Miss Sunshine". I would consider it a waste of time - there are too many other films I would rather see now. But to each his own in individual taste. Some people prefer satire and comedy and others serious and even tragedies. Guess, I tend to be the later set.

I saw Half Nelson last evening. Not quite what i expected but Ryan Gosling made a great role. I would definitely give it an 8.

Domer, Oh, I love "Edward Scissorhands". I even own the film. It is really crazy, well it is a Tim Burton film, and offbeat - Depp it great in it. He really cracks me up! I love the beginning when his father gave him the heart shaped cookie. That was so sweet and meaningful. Yes, the end is a bit corny, and I was not sure about Ryder being aged, if that really worked, but it still worked well enough for me. I love the scene when Edward is cutting all the dogs' hair in the neighborhood. How great is that? I laughed and laughed.
Domer, have you seen "Bennie and Joon" or "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" - two more good performances for Depp in offbeat films - very entertaining. Leonardo De Caprio, as a challenged child, in the second gives a stellar performance, as well. I also like "Don Juan DeMarco" and own it. It is a sweet film. Found it in the bargain bin - glad I took a chance on it.

Half Nelson was an excellent film, Ryan Gosling gave one of the best performances of last year. It's about an inner-city teacher, who though is a drug addict, inspires his students, (one especially in particular). I would absolutely without any hesitation recommend it.

I love this film its so quirky, but then again i love movies like that and spoof movies like robin hood men in tights!

Niamh, I loved "Robin Hood Men in Tights" - thought it was a riot when I first saw it years ago. I must give "Princess Bride" another chance. I must not have been in the mood for it. I like these comedies a lot - quirky ones. My friend and I talk about Scissorhands all the time. We loved it and I am glad I bought the DVD when I saw it.
N, so sorry you are sick, too. I hate to tell you, but it gets worse. Now it is all congestion in my head, my nose would not stop running last night, and I feel totally weak. My son and sister reported same symptoms a few weeks back. I did go to doctor and got an antibiotic - who knows if that will work?

I could not sleep last two nights, too restless and achy and had to stay in bed, so I ended up reading a book - "Brave New World" - read it yrs ago, quite interesting. Does anyone know - did they ever make a movie out of it? It sure would be a good one. I wondered, too, if the book "Island" by Audoux Huxley was made into a film. There was a film out about 2 yrs ago with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson called "The Island"; it was sci-fi futuristic, also. Was this film based on Huxley's book, anyone know?

I thought "A River Runs Through It" was a fine film and I found the relationship of the two boys and the father so touching, as well. I really love the film the more I think of it. It took me years to see it, I thought it would not be very good, but I was certainly way off in my predictions....a terrific film with good performances by all. Must have been something to see on a big screen. Scenes on the river were lovely.

I have been able to trace even the most obscure movies. The database of the site is huge. In fact i would be surprised if i couldn't find a film i know in there. You can search with every possible way. It has a lot of information about everything. The interesting part is that you can vote for each film you watch and you can create your own log. It has also reviews, lots of them from different people.

TEND, Interesting. I have only seen Gosling in "The United States of Leland" (2002) and "The Notebook". I liked the first film; it also stars Don Cheadle, who I think is always excellent. It is really frightening - the view the boy has of the world he lives in. Gosling was quite good in a complex role like this one. "The Notebook" was ok - I thought it overly sentimental and I read the book and felt it was really sappy. I believe Gosling was introduced in that film, anyone know if that is true? He has a long way to go I think, lots of potential. I will have to see "Half Nelson". It sounds interesting and on the line of the Leland film.

Jamesian, I never like to tell too much either. I sometimes go to read up on films on Amazon, etc and they spoil the film by nearly revealing the ending. Too many spoilers out there. Thanks for the sparse information. Turkish - interesting. I will check it out.

manolia, Thanks for the information. I knew there had to have been film/s of that book. I know the movie link and use the site, also. I tend to use the Amazon, so I can buy the film if I want it. I will have to check the imdb site more often from now on. My librarian always uses it to look stuff up for me.

Glad you could appreciate "A River Runs Through It". I never heard of "The wind that shakes the barley", but it has my interest now. I will try to see it. I love films that make me cry. I have a weakness for that sort of thing.

No, actually I have never seen those films you mentioned, but imagine they would be a total riot. Now you will not believe this - I have never seen "Silence of the Lambs". I didnt like silence of the lambs. but many people i know do. But i remember you said you hadnt seen Psycho. It fantastic and well worth viewing. Old one not the new one! Athought it was good...just not as good!:D

Niamh, Yes, know the old "Psycho" with Anthony Perkins. New one is called "American Psycho" isn't it? My library has "Psycho" I think. Next time I go there I will pick it up. Now I really do want to see it. I love Hitchcock and I love thrillers.
I have also seen the new "American Psycho" come in my library from time to time, and I nearly took it out, but then refrained from doing so. Doesn't it star Christian Bale?
I don't really envision liking "Silence of the Lambs". My son said it scared the wits out of him. He usually likes pretty gutsy stuff so that is sort of why I stayed away so long. The satires do sound funny though.

I am going to check the book thread out, and then I really have to lay down again. I am feeling treadful. Hope you don't get any worse. If you end up with the head congestion good news is the terrible sore throat gets better.

No there was an actual remake of Psycho about eight years ago. it has anne heche in it. I've never seen american Psycho though. Dont know if i'll like it! Yes it has the wonderful Christian bale in it. I still cant believe he's the little kid in Empire of the sun!

Yes it really is him in Empire of the sun! I couldnt believe it when i realised it! so much talent at such a young age! hum... i think i need to add that movie to my personal library. Its one of my favourites!
