Nonsensical Poetry

The flower
There once was a flower
That had brothers and sisters many,
and they all lived on a big tree,
near Annabell Lee.

It was a good life
without much toil or strife
and frequent visits from a bee
that lived near Annabell Lee.

But the little flower became sad
she was bored of being a flower
all the time and every hour,
the wide world she wanted to see
or at least the town of Annabel Lee.

So she asked her friend the bee:
dear bee, take me to Annabell Lee.
But the bee asked:
how will we achieve it
if you have neither wings nor feet?

They asked a fairy for help
who transformed the little
flower in a snail and gave her
an own house to carry.
And if you are lucky
you can see a little snail and a small bee
on the way to Annabell Lee!

My Word Can poem from 6/15/2023: practicality, sequoia, navigate, fletcher

the fletcher

in all practicality using a bow and arrow
will come in handy once bullets are scarce
making it easier to navigate the necessity
to hunt in the land of sequoias when guns
become useless and traps hit or miss…
arrowhead making is in our DNA, but for
tried and true flight I’ll have a fletcher
in my tribe when all is said and done

the sure arrow’s flight
that fletchers facilitate
finds fish, fowl, and beasts

to scrabble down a ravine of loosened soil to gain
access to the beach to clear my mind - alterations of spirit
to find… peace - one with the sea

the magic of bowling

attempting a strike
it's everynight at the bowling alley
playing the greatest game on the planet
clean shaven, wearing my team shirt
looking like a mantis on the approach
arms and legs so with 3-fingers in
my tailor made finger-tip ball
as I bluff my proficiency of the
night's lane conditions - too oily for
my taste usually, but with
all the memory muscles I can muster
I manage to let my bowling ball
rip applying lift and torque at release
just clearing my right ankle
feet sliding - ball sliding, left foot stopping
heart pounding as I hope the ball grabs
and sets just at the right angle into
the 1-3 pocket ... praying for no solid 7,
nor 8, nor 9, nor 10 pin
STRIKE !

Enjoyed the poem though, having bowled only once or twice in my life, I don´t understand the mysterious language of :
"and sets[the ball]just at the right angle into
the 1-3 pocket ... praying for no solid 7,
nor 8, nor 9, nor 10 pin".

I'll take that as a question :)

* The following is from my experiences circa 1960 (the first time I ever bowled :) - 1999 (when disabilities and finances quelled my spirit)

High Skill Bowling 101: Lane conditions & other minutia

There is oil applied to a lane's surface to both protect the coated wood surface (main reason) and to assist bowlers with a high skill level to get strikes. There are many oil patterns that may be applied but know that there are areas on each lane surface where it varies greatly - with the back end of each lane generally having much less oil than the first 30-40 feet. AND the oil isn't generally applied evenly from side to side AND as time and use over the course of a game the oil will migrate and/or lessen due to the bowling balls picking up the oil, hence bowling towels to clean off the oil or other matter from bowling balls between frames, so... AND in the course of semi-pro and pro tournaments bowlers move to a different pair of lanes after each game inheriting the oil conditions mucked up by the previous bowlers. OH, and for much of my hay days left handed bowlers had an advantage over right handers because their lane "conditions" didn't change as radically due to many more righties than lefties mucking up the lanes. OH, and the wooden lanes (maple & pine) are not all coated with the same coating from bowling venue to venue nor "dressed" or conditioned with oil the same way or the same oil...

(Unless the bowling ball is sliding all the way continuously down the lane) when a bowling ball finally "sets" from its course down the lane it generally has stopped sliding due to the lessening of friction from an oil pattern (friction interacting between the moving ball's surface and lane surface), and for a right hander, like me, with the lift and torque applied at the point of release over the foul line (depending on how the bowling ball is drilled relative to the weight block, or denser material inside the ball itself in a myriad of core configurations) the ball will begin to turn left, or "hook", "setting" (hopefully) at the ideal angle to strike the 1 & 3 pins or "pocket" nearly simultaneously for the optimum strike angle. "Setting" early would hit the #1 "head pin" too heavy or not at all to the left; "setting" late would hit the pins to the right side of the ideal "pocket" hit... unless "gutter" balls resulted of course.

Other factors include speed of the bowling ball, weight, angle of attack, etc.. I had the dubious luck to be able to leave any of the back 4-pins singly ("solid" 7, or 8, or 9, or 10 pin) with what I considered a perfect "shot". Hence, even when I averaged 215 per game at the top of my skill I couldn't get the prized "sanctioned 300" game/800 series (3-games) though I had 1-unsanctioned league 300 game and others in practice sessions...

My best career "sanctioned" game = 290 and "sanctioned" series = 794 (3-games); the 290 game started with a "solid" 7-pin in frame #1 followed by the "spare" and 11-strikes... the 794 series having a high game of 279 which consisted of 11-strikes and the "spare" of a single pin somewhere in the middle of the game: an average of 264+ for that 3-game series which I performed in the first week of a "handicap" bowling league (pins are given to the team of lesser team average at a percentage of the difference between the two teams usually 80% constituting the handicap) watching my bowling average shrink from week to week for a very long time before stabilizing. This was why I generally bowled non-handicap leagues ("scratch" leagues) or tournaments or "pot games" (bowlers competing with each other generally in a non-league/non-tournament group with the winner of each game receiving the money set aside per person per game or "pot") ie: gambling.

No, I'm not bitter that I never had a "sanctioned" 300 game or 800 series while nearly all my peers (and many others with much less ability but better luck) had at least one or the other or many... I'm not bitter, I'm not bitter, I'm not bitter...

Thanks, tailor, also for the glossary, this is quite a bowling treatise. You played in bowling tournaments.The one or two time I went bowling it was for entertainment so it was quite simple. One got there after a pizza or so. There was a bowling hall like this one in the Portuguese wiki page:https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boliche. I never had heard about the oil and I don´t remember the pins getting oily. Then one bought the number of strikes and off to the trial. Either you felled the pins or you didn´t. In my case the pins usually remained calmly where they were...and that was it.

Enjoyed the engeniosity of your poem after googling "telestich". I wish I had explored Seattle better the one time I was there. But the time allowed on shore was short, we had no map so we kept near the place of the ferry.
