I'm never sure how to start these things...

Anyway, I stumbled on this site a couple of weeks ago. I was looking up a poem from WWI, and one click led to another. Next thing I knew, I'd found one of my favorite stories from grammar school: The Open Window.

I've been steadily working my way through the list of Saki works, and will move on to reintroduce myself to O Henry.

My hobbies... Well, my husband and I are very "into" self-sufficiency, and "living simply so that others may simply live" (thank you, Elizabeth Seton for saying it so succinctly).

I have a rather large garden, we're working to restore a dilapidated orchard, and we raise chickens, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, and goats.

Old Jeep restoration is a passion of mine. Sewing is fun, reading is better.

So now I'm going to go and answer the question that prompted my joining your membership here, then I will continue reading Saki!

I have a BA degree in British literature- though my mouth is not native to that land. I would ardently read what people think about books and only then could I feel the true sense of the book. Yet one thing I hate more than formalism is a critic who writes for the benefit of his own ***.:banghead:

With out a doubt, my beloved writers are the Russians- in their silver age- F. Dostoevsky, N. Gogol, and Chekhov. I cannot deny the talents of D.H Lawrence and Hemingway too.

going on it. (I consume it and pay for it just like everyone else.) I spend a lot of time reading, especially since my sons have grown up. I like to garden,

Big O here, from the great state of Tennessee. This looks like a great site. I have always loved literture, though I confess I don't usually read fiction. I'm taking a literature course now, so have of necessity been spending more time with it. Someone caught my ear with a comment about Swift's A Modest Proposal. His brand of satire can be shocking, it takes some getting used to. Pretty ballsy social/political commentary for the era. Swift almost got his neck stretched for that little story. No wonder he was so beloved by his people.
Are you folk familiar with Thurber? I'm getting to read The Secret Life of Walter Mitty for the first time.

Hey, I'm BellaRose, and I'm currently working on a paper for the French Revolution likening Madame Guillotine to a monarch in several different ways, with one twist: she united and "equalized" the people of France. I love studying history, especially the French Revolution, and the Romantic Period.
My favorite book as of right now is A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, but I am starting Paradise Lost, so that may become my new favorite.

I'm a classical and romantic music nerd, I'm in two orchestras in which I play the violin, and I do ballet and voice lessons, as well as ice-skating. I aspire to become an opera-singer one day, as well as a Languages teacher for under-privileged students. Currently in my spare time, I like to dissect and analyze poetry by Shakespeare, like his sonnets.

Oh yes, and I ADORE the phantom of the opera in all shapes and forms (or most shapes and forms)

So, first of all - a big HELLO to this active community.

After a year of not investing my time in short story writing, I have found myself to be terribly rusty. I'm actually quite disappointed in myself for having temporarily abandoned my dream of short story writing as I didn't have enough time or a willing audience that would critique my work.

Well - having said that, I will initially post my old work (some pieces I've written during my years in high school), and eventually post new pieces around mid-March perhaps? (I also write poetry too!)

Anyway, as for favorite authors, I really do look up to Neil Gaiman for his vivid imagination. Anyone else who shares a similar interest?
