Hi Folks,
I am a retired Navy helicopter pilot. I work as a self-employed woodworker now and I am an aspiring writer. Those two interests, fiction writing and building furniture, boats and structures out of wood, share more in common in terms of craftsmanship than you might think!
Good to be here and read so many energetic and thoughtful opinions from such great folks.

Hello, I am a secondary English teacher. I have taught high school English for four years and, due to a move, am currently teaching 8th grade language arts. Not sure why they call it English for high school and language arts for middle school, but that’s the way they do it. My favorite author (for the past several years, anyway) is Dostoevsky, though I love Tolstoy as well. It’s hard to find people in life who want to discuss literature–at least that has been my experience, so I did a google search to find literary forums and found this. I also have a deep interest in writing–more from an objective point of view; I don’t write very much (but I'm working on that). Hope to enter into some great discussions here. Todd
Welcome Todd. You sound very interesting. I think you'll enjoy it here. I've had trouble discussing literature with others. Once out of college, there are very few people in my sphere of humanity that I can discuss literary topics with. Lit Net has been a blessing for me.
Actually your post reminded me of an incident way back when I was much younger. I happen to go out on a date with this really pretty girl and I made the mistake of telling her I was reading Tolstoy's War and Peace. And I started talking about what a great work and got carried away with the subject. She was an intelligent girl, but not literary. I must have bored her to tears because she never went out with me again. Let this be a lesson for all literary minded people who go out on dates. :lol: :lol:
Thanks, Virgil. I read a couple of your initial posts on this thread. You have quite a background. I love to see the engineering and medical type of people also passionate about literature. I think it makes for a more complete person. I think e.e. cummings was a doctor. I wish I had more mathematical aptitude, but alas, I am awfully lopsided. Just love literature. Sorry to hear of your dating mishap. I guess most of us have had a similar experience. Hope you found that right one later on. Todd
Welcome Todhill :wave: . Glad you've come to join in the literature discussion. Blacksmithing, wow. I've never actually seen a blacksmith at work. I only know that poem about the blacksmith "under the spreading chesnut tree" that everyone seems to learn in school. Sounds interesting.

I don't think I've introduced myself formally, so here goes:
I'm a 9th grade homeschool student, but next year I'm going to Pre-IB. IB students take 100% "AP/Honors" courses, must take four years of foreign language, higher level science and higher level math, must take a certain number of fine arts (don't remember how many), and have to have some number of CAS hours. CAS is Creativity, something, Service I think. You can't do IB until you're in 11th grade, so I'll be Pre-IB, which is similar, but just Pre.
I love literature. I really do. I don't even know why. I'm also an obsessive novelist. For example, I took part in NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month. That's where a bunch of wacky novelist write 50,000 word novels all in the month of November. It's really international. There are writers from Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and a couple from Africa (mostly South Africa).
What do I want to do when I'm grown? Well, I want to be a nurse/linguist/novelist/translator/interpretor/mother. There's a big plan about how I'm going about this, and yes, it will work. :D It starts with becoming a CNA in highschool (this one's optional but preferred). Then I'll go to LPN-RN school, meanwhile getting translator/interpretor certs, which aren't hard to get if you study foreign languages, which I'm doing right now. I'm specifically working on my ASL out of school, because I'd never go hungry with one of those translating certs. I don't really need to do anything but write to become a novelist. When I'm done with LPN-RN school, I'll work my way through school again in linguistics. Maybe I'll throw in an English minor that time around, cause it will be easier to double up. Somewhere in there, or afterwards, I'll get married. A tough plan, but completely plausible. I'll just have to stick to it.
The thing about those, is I'll cover all my interests, and all my bases. :D If I have an RN license as well as a ASL translator's cert, I'll never have to worry about some bread on the table. Not that life will be completely luxurious, but I'll probably not be unemployed for long amounts of time.
Rosie, you sound like a great person. Welcome to lit net. I know you already like it here, because you've posted a few times.
Well, thank-you for the welcome. I hope I can sound intelligent (being only fifteen and all). But I'm really trying to read more and more literature. I think I read stuff quite a bit below my level usually. I'm currently plugging away through "The Scarlet Letter." I'm supposed to read that for school in about May, but I've found that I never enjoy anything half as much if I'm told to read it, so I think I'll read it before it's spoiled, and then read it again. :)

Virgil, Funny tale. A very similar thing happened to me. A month ago, my mother's fellows lecturers were talking about literature. I interrupted and I gave all the account of what I read and liked and stuff like this... And then the aunties looked at me as I was from anoher planet. When I mention Mill On The Floss. They give me a whole lecture that how "Reading adult books deteriorate children"
I did not get that whether I was bound to read Cinderella or Snow White? So it is the best thing to never talk about literature outside your English class or literature forum. :D
What I get whenever I talk about literature in my house is quite different. My house embraces it, but if I ever talk about something that my older sister (who's seventeen) hasn't read, she'll go: "You think you're sooooooo smart reading that don't you?" It's really obnoxious. Whenever I share a fun fact it's always, "You're trying to act like you're so smart aren't you?"
Or, another thing that will come from that same sister is this sort of thing:
I had just finished reading "Ivanhoe" and I was talking with my brothers about how Ulrica and Urfried are the same and why she changed her name and stuff. So my sister comes up and says, "Seriously, we've all read it you know."
Now since my sister has said that she hates Ivanhoe, and Ivanhoe is not a book she'd ever read, I'll say, "Really? You've read Ivanhoe?"
Then she'll say, "Yeah. You think that I don't read?"
Then it'll be next, "Who's Prior Aymer?" And she won't know. This happened with Scarlet Letter too. Yesterday I was talking with my mom about it and my sister says,
"You're not the only person who's read it you know. I've read it before too...who's Hester again?" Only the main character. Happened with "The Crucible" and "Tale of Two Cities" and "Three Musketeers" and others. All similar things happened.
Well, Rosie, I guess stuff like that tends to happen when you're young. Many people, unfortunately, don't take youth seriously. But...wisdom is ageless. And...it sounds like you know the difference between reading and "reading." Todd
Hmm. No offense to your sister (although I wouldn't mind offending her a smidgen, if it meant she learned something), but nobody likes a pseudointellectual.
