I have two pairs of Hanwag shoes, and they are the best I've ever had. Really comfortable to walk in all day long, plus the winter boots I have are amazingly warm. They totally saved my toes from freezing last winter :D

Here's a short article on how to pick a good hiking boot. This person likes Lowa Renegade GTX-mid.

Where did you decide to go, Papaya?
Oh? Their website says Hanwag shoes are sold in several locations by Moosejaw in Michigan.

They fit me like buttah- like buttah!
I buy them on the web from Sierra Trading Post. Get 'em a full size larger than your regular shoe size, or better yet, go to a backpacking store and try them on, then go on line and order them.
Of course everybody's foot is different. What works for me might cripple you and vice versa.
You've got to call them hiking boots, Papaya. Boots. It's a very masculine game, hiking. That being said, if you want to make a splash, these look pretty amazing:

Hopefully she has someone walking behind her the whole way.
I prefer to hike in bare feet. I'm a sure footed little beast if left to my own devices, shoes just confuse the issue. Whenever I go hiking in the Badlands, I do it barefooted. Sure, my feet sting a little by the end of the hike and once in a while I get poison ivy but the hike itself is smooth with no slipping or sliding. Stinging feet and a little poison ivy is a small price to play. ;)
