I guess it's time for me to make a somewhat belated apperarence in this thread. I've been soooo busy reading and posting (feeling a bit like a kid in a candy store).

I found this place a while back and joined immediately. It is exactly what I've been loking for :thumbs_up :nod: I like it here, and several of you have made me feel very welcome.

Me? A 46 yo quality engineer with a life long interest in literature and languages (among many other things. I could also mention Quality, Environment, Creativity, History, Travel, Photography, Dancing, Computers and bags of other amusing pastimes...)

I'm also old enough to be a "has been" in several ways: Glider pilot, weight lifter, marathon runner...

In short, I try to keep life interesting, and generally succeed in that ambition. Life is brief, and should be enjoyed. There will be no reruns, you know...

Welcome Claes. You already know I'm an engineer, although not a Quality engineer. Depending on what stage of development something is in, we work fairly close with our Q.E. department. In fact some of my vociferous arguments have come with Quality engineers :D , but also learned good engineering disciplines from them :nod: . Some of your other activities are pretty interesting too.

I've been reading books by Jules Verne. My family and I finished 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea last year, I went on to read Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Mysterious Island by myself -- and am now about a third of the way through Five Weeks in a Balloon.

These are very good pieces of fiction. I like their enthusiasm for science and discovery. They have a downside too, in that they are period pieces and have smatterings of racism and chavinism that modern audiences may find distasteful.

I'm interested in trying some of the science containted, and, maybe, editing a new online resource with experiments a reader could try.

Example:

In 'Five Weeks in a Balloon' -- they decompose water into Hydrogen and Oxygen by electricity. There's a nifty little experiment you can make with a 9v battery -- tape a paper clip to each post and stick in a class of water. Hydrogen will form on one paperclip and oxygen on the other. It works best if you add a couple drops of dish soap to the water. You can see the gas better as it makes it's way to the surface. Also, if you take a match to the bubbles you may be able to ignite some of the gas. :)

Ok, I'm a graduate student in NYU (doing my masters in math), but I'm originally from St. Petersburg, Russia.

Among my favorite books are "Brothers Karamazov", "Idiot" and "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoevsky, "Master and Margarita" by Bulgakov, "One hundred years of solitude" by Markes, "Foucault’s Pendulum" by Eco.

Currently I'm reading mostly history books. I usually choose some topic and try to read a bunch of books about it. Now I'm interested in the medieval spanish history.

My hobbies are history, soccer(totally obsessed with it) and tennis.

Cool. Welcome to Mike and Boris. I'm amazed how many non literature people are attracted to this network. You can read a little about me in my profile and intro on page one of this thread. As you'll see I too have a science background, actually engineering.

I couldn't help but to notice that name "Boris", which is to me a dear name in remembering Saints Boris and Gleb. Also, your reading process reminds me of my reading at many times in my life.

Even at work, while away from books, it is as if a secretary organizes files of things read in the past, then suddenly I see convergences in things I had not directly read.

Do you ever experience that?

Hi. I tried posting a few minutes ago, but something didn't get through so now I have to start over...

I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, and now I'm pursuing a degree in literature. My mother's aspiring to become a children's author, and her efforts are inspiring me to take my own writing more seriously. I like recording my dreams, and making short stories out of them.

I joined here particularly to ask around about some obscure old books I've found, as well as some I can't find anywhere.

that is an excellent idea: recording dreams as the basis of short stories!

Thanks! It's also very productive for me, because I rarely have dreams that are completely random. Usually, my dreams have specific plots, with random objects, or a few random moments in an otherwise cohesive story.
