Hi, I am new here. I googled this site looking for information on O. Henry. When I was in high school I read a short story that I believe was by O. Henry. I often wish I had this story or knew how to obtain it. I have asked many people about it but know one seems familiar with it. This story was about a man who was in prison and dis-connected from his family of origin. What I remember most vividly about the story is that the woman was seeking her estranged son and found who she thought might be her son in prison. The young man brought to talk to her looked familiar to her- he was beligerent and denied that he was her son. He finally convinces her that he is not her sonand is not worthy to be called her son so the woman stands up to leave very dejected - the young man maintains his stance until she is out the door and then he rushes to it and cries after the mother he just turned away. IT was a very touching story. I was reading the book Think and Grow Rich and Napoleon Hill mentions O. Henry and his time spent in prison which is where he discovered his true writing talent. So it is possible the story I read was auto-biographical - even though O. Henry's mother died when he was young. If anyone know of this story and how I might obtain a copy of it. I would extremely grateful.

it's possible that O.Henry wrote the story, you may wish to check with your library for a book that contains all of O.Henry's works. It is true that he was imprisoned when he was in his 30s.

This is my first post here in the forum, though I have joined it some time ago.
I am a 19-year-old male, from EGYPT... What? Yes I know it is strange to find an Egyptian person interested in English Literature, mais, c'est la vie! I am in the Faculty of Arts, English Department. Our main field of study is English Literature -- I love it!
I think this forum is an excellent one... It increases ones knowledge of different cultures and habits... Would you like to know more about the Middle East in general and Egypt in particular? Who wants?

Egypt is known to the world for its Pyramids and Sphinx, and its Pharonic Culture. Now, we live in a much modernised country; and still retain our heritage.
All I can say at the moment about Egypt is that the language its citizens speak is Arabic, its main religion is Islam (and there are Christians as well) and its population is about 76 millions. Its climate used to be moderate both at summer and winter; but for the last few years it grew very hot in summer -- winds coming from India! :lol:

That sound's interesting. I once tried learning Urdu, and thought of getting a self-learning book, but when I browsed through I realised it is a tough language. In India, Muslims usually speak Urdu (in Northern India especially) and they do learn Arabic for reading Koran. Maybe you can help me learn a few Arabic words or Urdu (if you know ofcourse). Would help me learn how to write "Ashraf" in Arabic?Quote:

Hey people I still don't know how to use this thing properly yet so I guess the correct place to start is at the begining... well that's not entirely true if you're a book lover but hey nevermind. I'm starrie, just found this site mooching around the internet and thought I'd give it a go. Hope we can find lots to talk about. I can't really say I have a favourite book or author or even time period because I like so much. I'm studying a degree in English and Philosophy and that's about it. Not much to tell right now but I'm sure I'll start talking lots as time goes on. Hope to speak to you all soon.

Have you visited the British counsel library recently? I mean I havent been in for a few years but as I rember they carried a lot of "literature" and why would they do that if there wasnt a demand. In fact I know alot well ok a handful of Egyptiens who are interested in literature.

I was prompted to make my first post here, so erm, here i am!
A bit about myself? Well, i'm from London, I'm still at school! (feeling a little young...) but that doesn't mean i don't enjoy classic literature, because believe me I do. I'm studying Great Expectations at the moment, which is the main reaon I'm here, this site is very useful for helping me with my essay! I also study geography, german, drama, art, maths and science, of which i enjoy drama the most!
I'm also very into music. I play several instruments: piano, trumpet and guitar. All very different instruments! I enjoy listening to music immensly, mainly rock, but can vary depending on mood! I LOVE going to gigs! I'd not survive living anywhere without such a vast number of gig venues as London! Also - I love playing gigs with a band i play bass for, The Primes.

My name is Kenneth Matheson, and i live in Nova Scotia Canada. I am entering my first year of university in the fall with dreams of becoming an art historian. I enjoy classical literature the most, but i am a fan to most types. I try to keep an open mind and be open to new ideas, and opinions. I love all types of music, and artwork.
I love this site i think it is a great idea to have all these books online for everyone to discover. I myself have discovered quite a few books here that have moved up to become some of my favorites.
