Antiquarian, Yep, I did watch all the extras - I can never get enough of those and will stay up mega late, just so I don't miss out on everything available on the disc.

Oh, enjoy "Sweeney Todd"....hope the blood doesn't gross you out too much.

I am watching this terrific film. It stars the fantastic Scottish actor - Robert Carlyle as Hitler. I have never seen him give a bad performance and this one is right up there in quality. The film (actually an epic miniseries) is called:

"HITLER The Rise of Evil"

I am now on disc #2 and I am totally emersed in it and mesmerized with Carlyle's performance. The cover attracted me, since it said it had been nominated for 7 Emmy Awards. It is very well done and amazingly revealing of things I knew nothing about, although I read this terrific book on Hitler, called "Explaining Hitler", which was totally fascinating. I am wondering if this film was based on that book. When done viewing it, I will give a full report in this thread.

manolia, thanks for the warning. My librarian and I were discussing this last night and she said the same. She seems to have good taste in films but my son and I do differ sometimes on what we think is good. I know I will force myself to see it even though I know it to be violent. It is not like I haven't seen violent films before but lately, to be honest with you, I have been getting sort of sick of them.
So sorry I haven't gotten to thatPM yet; I was so busy on the weekend, and yesterday was my mother's birthday.

Oh, Antiquarian, I had this same problem, this Sunday night. Came home late from my son's and thought I might watch:

"Dial M for Murder" Great film, of course and I rate it highly. I have seen it before but this was a second or third viewing.

Anyway, I just could not stay awake and I could not pay close attention to all the great little details. I love this film but I blame it on the turkey I ate for dinner - the trytophane must have been making me nod off. I never fall asleep when watching a movie.

Last night I saw this great miniseries:

HITLER The Rise of Evil

This starred the Scottish actor, Robert Carlyle, who dropped his accent (kind of amazing in itself, since he has such a pronounced Scottish accent). He played Hitler and a younger actor played the younger version, and an 'up and coming' childstar played Hitler in his childhood - hard to think of Hitler as a child, isn't it? The kid was really incredible, even though he did not have a large part; it was substantial enough and to get a glimpse into his early life. I found this film really filled in where others just began, and it helped me to understand how everything got set in motion polically and socially, and how the German people could actual supported Hitler (he was quite hypnotic and persausive at times) and how they believed in him, to change their world for the better; this is not something I find very easy to understand; I can understand better how power is lorded over people, with terrorism ruling in the end. This film did not set out to give us reasons for doing what he did. It simply tried to focus on the facts and lay them down as they are known; many are not known so the portrait in his earlier days has to be somewhat sketchy. Amazing to me was the fact that Hitler was once prosecuted for 'Treason to the State' and imprisoned for only 9 months and then got to the heights in government that he did. He even pleaded guilty to his offense.
I think the director and screen writer did a fine job. I am pleased this came into my library; even then I was reluctant to check it out - thinking 'how many Nazi films have I see; haven't I seen enough?' However, this film was quite different and showed the years leading to his power; also his strange relationship with his neice and later, his girlfriend, Eva Braun. I also tried to view the extras, but have only accomplished part of that task, since it became quite late. I will try to resume that tonight. Watching the extras and discussions about the man and the film made it much more accurate and interesting.
I would recommend this film to anyone. I think that Carlyle's performance was quite extraordinary and one of his best. I loved his performance in the war camp film, of which I can't now recall the name. I had reviewed that film, in this thread awhile back. In this film, he truly threw himself into the role and became Hitler, which was pretty scary. His makeup artist actually stopped and broke down, and cried when she saw his makeup completed, because his realistic appearance conjured up all kinds of terrible memories for her and her family. Apparently some material was added to his face to fill it out and change his nose slighly. One would never have detected this, unless you watched the extras. The locations were problematic as well, because the general public does not like seeing images of Hitler, then they relive the horrors and they simply don't care to be reminded. One has to commend the movie makers for their amazing ability to contruct such a factual movie and have it come out right.

Becoming Jane. It was well written and James McAvoy was quite good. I was kind of disappointed by Anne Hathaway. She's definitely improving as an actor I think, but her accent was weak.

watched again Breaking the Waves 4.0/4.0 Can't wait for Von Trier's finale to his USA Trilogy.

Hi *Classic*Charm*! I didn't see Juno but I keep seeing it advertized. I will have to see if my library has it. It sounds good.

I saw "Becoming Jane" recently and I felt like something wasn't just right about it, like something was missing....I think now you have hit upon what was bugging me. I seriously did not care for Anne Hathaway's casting in that film. I thought her perfomance was lacking. I also thought the film was not memorable. Maybe I need to see it again because I can hardly recall anything now about the plot, only that parts were reminiscent of her novels.
I do, however, love James McAvoy. I thought he was just great in "Atonement". He is going places, with his fine acting ability and great eyes.

Yes, I would definitely recommend seeing Juno. It's adorable.

Yes, Anne's performance really wasn't memorable, which is a shame. I thought the film had potential when I first heard about the concept. Ooh I have yet to see Atonement. I can't wait. I read the novel for school last year and couldn't decide what I thought, but I'm planning on reading it again after I've seen the film. I've heard mixed reviews about it, though.

Currently, it is always checked out, when I go to get it.:( I keep wondering if I will like it being a musical, too; but that was the point of the play, right? I know Depp can sing; I saw him in "Baby Face" and he did a good job of singing; I think he did his own singing in that film. I am sure the art direction would be good and creative, with Burton as the director. He excells in that sort of thing.

I really enjoyed that film, too. I think I did see it twice already since I took it out from my library again thinking I had not seen it. It was a cute and light film; enjoyable. With all these 'dark' films lately we need a 'light' one once in awhile!

Yes, I agree with your assessment of Hathaway. She just did not seem emersed to me in the role of Anne. She still seemed like herself and not the character. Maybe she seemed to modern to me or something. I felt disappointed, because I thought as you said, that 'it had great potential' and it fell short. I wish they had gotten it right.:(

I loved "Atonement". I have not read the book,but I thought the movie was very well done; one of the best films I have seen this year. Let us know what you think after you see it. I will check this thread to see, when you write something about it. I am curious.
I wish now to read the book....maybe in the summer. Good plan to read it again after viewing the film; I often do that, too.

No, Janine, I simply haven't been around much lately! School has been very time consuming.

I agree with you- I much prefer to watch the film befoe reading the book simply because the books are always better. If I read first, the film is always a letdown. If I watch first, I can enjoy the film and then love the book even more.

I just watched Jeff Wayne's musical version of War Of The Worlds. Loved it! The music was awesome, and the singers were fantastic, but they were kinda really bad actors! But nonetheless, it was great! :D

Yes, the play was a musical. He didn't sing in Babyface, but I enjoyed his singing in Sweeney Todd. I've seen the film three times and the soundtrack is in heavy rotation on my Ipod. :thumbs_up

It was really good, it's about a young American guy(Michael Pitt, I like how this guy chooses his movies, I really liked 'Bully' too) who comes to France, and the guy meets a brother and his sister who have a strange relationship, not incestual but they still sleep naked together, and they become friends and it's difficult to sum up the movie, but it's about cinema (a lot of references of other movies are found in this movie), it's about dreams, revolt (it takes place during mai 68 in France and there are references to the Vietnam war), I like the soundtrack too (Janis Joplin's voice!!) and it's about sex too, there is quite explicit sex in it and you can see them all naked together, it's beautiful. I really recommand it. But in the meantime I have strange taste in movies so....
