Had this in me head all day - by Stephen Malkmus. An amazing talent. All of his work with Pavement and his solo work is great.

I will play on the cliche and start raving of Roger Waters and Pink Floyds lyrics, I especailly like the ablem Animals, and I did some thinking about which of these marathon tracks, that have taken both positive and negitive reveiws from critics, and decided with the song Dogs, which seem to target Capitalists. If you are unaware of the albem Animals, Waters and Gilmore uses simular metaphors used by Orwell in the novel Animal Farm, depicting Pigs as the opressive ruling class, dogs as capitalists and sheep as the easly manipulated lower class, so heres Dogs:

I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused.
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used.

If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this
maze?

That is such an amazing song, that whole album is amazing and scandalously overlooked by all but hardcore Floyd fans. Dave's guitar solo on Dogs just literally takes my breath away, I really do think it's one of his finest moments.

Credit where credit is due; "The Partisan" is actually an old French song, Cohen may have been the one to translate it, but I'm not sure. He didn't write it, at any rate. But his version is really really good. (A British band called Electrelane recently recorded a very different version of it which is well worth listening to.)

As for "Animals" - I completely agree. Possibly Floyd's best album, IMO.

It has been said that this song I chose is about the plight of African Americans and their struggle for freedom. I don't know. But it touches a chord deep in my heart just musically speaking.It is haunting in it's simple presentation.

I know, you can also get a great version by Joan Baez, but i like this one the best, so i chose to put his name to it.. i like the fact that he sings some of it in french.

A few points about the White Stripes:

1. Shut up. They do not need a bass player. I happen to be completely obsessed with music (I had to stop halfway through this post so I could go play 'Dead Leaves' on my piano), and I know a thing or two about arrangements. A bassist would only drag the band down, unless this bass player happened to be amazing and psychic.

2. Shut up. Meg is not a bad drummer. I have taught drums for almost two years now, and I know the difference between restraint and an actual lack of ability. Ask yourself this: would the band really be better if Neil Pert was behind the kit? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Sorry about the rant. We White Stripes fans have it tough.
