WH is a good book; a must-read in my opinion especially if you are studying English Literature.
It is a must. An dark obsession story, rather than a love story.
How about "The Scarlet Pimpernel," by Baroness Orczy. It's also been made into a movie and a musical, I think.
Yeah didn't Richard E. Grant star in the television version?? I think I remember my mum drooling over the tele!!
The Age of Miracles by Catherine MacCoun.
Think of the moral dilemmas a nun (who's considered no less than a saint due to her miraculous powers of healing) have to deal with when she falls inlove with no less than a libertine troubadour. The story takes place in Medieval England.
I didn't see the Richard E. Grant version of "The Scarlet Pimpernel," but I remember the old film with Leslie Howard. I just looked up the musical-- yes, there is one. I think I'll check out the DVD of the production this weekend.
Why it's so romantic-- the main character secretly saves French families from the guillotine, while maintaining a dopey alter-ego to hide his identity. His wife isn't very impressed with her clumsy husband, but she's in love with the unknown, mysterious hero. I haven't read the book in awhile, but I remember swooning.. :)
Can "Great Expectation" make someone cry?
Another one that made me cry was, "Camille" by Alexander Dumas fils (the famous author's son). And the last 50 or so pages of "Les Miserables" got to me too.
Molko, Jane Eyre made me cry too, Don't worry it's not just you! Also I loved Hunchback of Notre Dame, it was a really sutble love story that made me cry and I've read it about 100 times since! My copy is falling apart! I love it!
One of the best i have read was Love Story by Erich Segal
Hi - I'd really recommend The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger it's absolutely brilliant, gripping and has me in tears every time I read it, in fact more each time I read it 'cos I know what's going to happen. Another great love story is Like Water for Chocolate (sometimes this is printed as Like Water for Hot Chocolate) by Laura Esquivel - another fantastic star-crossed lovers story.
Has anyone ever read a really good love story by a man? All the one's I can think of are by women authors.
I'm embaressed to admit i usually look to Jane Austen when in search of a lighter, more romantic novel. Shes really quite a good writer with a real talent for characterization and dialogue.
Kill me now, but I cried like an idiot over the ending of Phillip Pullman's "His Materials Trilogy".
Glad to hear I wasn't the only one who teared up during Jane Eyre!
