Hello. Yes I realize there is an awfully long time between the original posts and my response, but the debate was so compelling that I really wanted to share.
In regards to your comment of Catherine putting others (or just Heathcliff) before her, I've found an interesting ...point. Though Catherine does sacrifice her first marriage to aid Heathcliff, in the same chapter, she also proclaims 'she IS Heathcliff.' Thus since Catherine sees him as herself, does that then make her marriage to aid Heathcliff a selfish act?

I've always thought Cathy was monstrously selfish. At least Heathcliff is redeemable in that he displays some sort of love for Cathy that goes beyond a selfish one.
