Wow I'm almost not aware that you were reffering to me there...

Let see.., last time I read sex refers more to physical criterias, i.e. boy got mr . happy and girl has ms cheerful..or something like that. And these criterias are somewhat naturally obtained. On the other hand, gender refers to the quality or role which is attributted to certain sex and somewhat has social/cultural essences in it, means that it is socially/culturally constructed. For instance: dad's working in the office while mom's doin laundry at home.

Please correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't get in touch with these terms for quite a long time.

"subby" might actually be right here...though both words sex and gender mean just about the same...sex is actually a biological profile of a person..whereas gender is more in the social context...like masculine or feminie...hope u get wht im tryin to say here...

Sorry, but no. I can put a tape recorder in the forest and record the noise despite no-one being physically there to hear it the noise will be recorded.

maybe i should rephrase my answerless question (emphasis on the 'answerless'):

If a tree should fall in a forrest, with nothing, living or dead, to hear or record any noise that may or may not be made, would it make a noise??

kilt-ex, the point of these answerless questions is that there are no answers, and that they cannot be answered, and they exist only to amuse our minds, and make us feel very intellectual for a minute or two before we actually realise that we can never prove our own answer to question, nor disprove someone elses.

i could easily argue this tree question both ways, and think that i was right both ways, and make myself believe what i end up talking about for 10 minutes, but in the end, no one wins, on ANY of these questions.

what came first, the chicken or the egg?? we can never know, unless maybe God himself comes down, registers on lit-net, and after he convinces everyone that he is actually God, explain to us why X comes before Y.

until that day happens, and God is posting in the Intro thread, i shall continue to argue both ways of the debate on any of these questions, and kilt-ex, i would gladly have you as opposing council.

Well I was meaning more in general than about my graduation (which btw I just got to know will officially take place on the 28th), cos I've kinda always had that feeling of seeing some kind of black hole ahead...Just this times it's stronger, more urgent and related to life as a whole and not just to some parts of it.

A falling tree makes sound waves. A noise heard by a person is the impact of those sound waves on his ear drum. End of discussion.

so if the noise heard is the impact of the waves on the ear drum, if there is no ear drum, there is no noise.

well, ye see. if there are no eardrums, on any such thing that could be possibly hear the noise, then logically, there would be nothing that the tree could impact with since everything on the planet can register vibration. therefore there would be no sound emited by the tree, because for the tree to emit a falling sound it must fall upon the mentioned something. So tree falling with nothing to hear it fall = no sound created.

Pay attention while I reiterate:

A falling tree makes sound waves regardless of whether anyone is there to hear them.

If a human (or other animal with ears) happens to be around, the sound waves are experienced/processed as noise.

Epistemology 101 class dismissed.
