I love a Dream within a Dream but my all time high would have to be Romance-
Romance
by Edgar Allan Poe
Romance, who loves to nod and sing,
With drowsy head and folded wing,
Among the green leaves as they shake
Far down within some shadowy lake,
To me a painted paroquet
Hath been— a most familiar bird—
Taught me my alphabet to say—
To lisp my very earliest word
While in the wild wood I did lie,
A child— with a most knowing eye.
Of late, eternal Condor years
So shake the very Heaven on high
With tumult as they thunder by,
I have no time for idle cares
Through gazing on the unquiet sky.
And when an hour with calmer wings
Its down upon my spirit flings—
That little time with lyre and rhyme
To while away— forbidden things!
My heart would feel to be a crime
Unless it trembled with the strings.
It *is* very hard to chose just which Poe poem I like best, as there are so many to chose from. However, the one that comes to mind the most easily is "Annabel Lee" for its sheer beauty. The rolling cadence of the poem calls to mind the shore he writes from: you can almost *feel* the waves crashing to shore as he bemoans his loved one's fate.
I like all of the aforementioned, Israfel, The Bells, Bridal Ballad and, of course, Alone (is it how he always felt?)
Alone - Edgar Allan Poe
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were---I have not seen
As others saw---I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I lov'd, I loved alone.
Then---in my childhood---in the dawn
Of a most stormy life---was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold---
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by---
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
i thought The Raven was pretty funny
The Raven
The Raven, surely. I'm more than halfway through memorizing it :P
Second best I'd go for your poem, Pillow, "Dream within a Dream".
As for the last in the podium... "Alone"!
"The Raven," most definitely. Poe proves that you can write poetry that is engaging and narrative without sounding obtuse (Emerson, I'm talking to you).
"Spirits of the dead" I greatly enjoyed it, of this of course I mean that it helped me deal with certain occurances in life.
My favorites are The Conqueror Worm and Al-Aaaraf
The Raven, deffinately, closely followed by a dream withing a dream. Just Classic.
Israfael and Alone.
As many have said before, I now say again, The Raven. I love the way it is written, it was also the first Poe piece I read.
Hi , ALL Poe's fans,
There was never a poem written in the language of Shakespeare and Browning as Poe's '' A Dream Within A Dream''. It is great because it does not give a complete understanding. It is like the coy mistress of Marvell, slipping through your fingers. The time you think that you have grasped it,the moment it slides away and hides its face in the crowd of stars.
A Dream Within A Dream and of course The Raven.
