Regular exercise on the other hand raises the metabolic rate and thus increases the burning of energy. You'll also feel more energetic during the day by doing this. But I am sure you know all of this.
Anyway, temporary diet = bad, regular exercise = good.
A combination of a good (permanent)diet and regular exercise is the best.
