The Good Shepherd

I watched The Good Shepherd finally, for the second time, though I've attempted to watch it about four times.

The Good Shepherd is one of those movies that, even if you were paying attention the first time, you would have to watch it again just to put all the pieces together (assuming you are able to concentrate for the duration of the film).

The movie is about a father who loves his son. But, you don't know that until you get to the end with all the back and forth between the main character's flashbacks and the progression of the actual story taking place (and the flashbacks serve to flesh out the main story).

After all that, I can't give it any less than an 8/10 simply because it was such a challenge to watch. I don't know that showing the thing in sequential order would have added anything to it. Besides, as humans, we all make decisions based on what happened in the past and how we perceived those events and how those events shaped us into the people we are today.

Matt Damon was perfectly stony and emotionless as the CIA official who does what he can to protect his son, and you don't know what's happening until it's all done, and that's just how it should be when the CIA is involved. You have to go back and look at what happened and then put the pieces together. I guess that's why I can't give this movie any less than 8, despite the difficulty I had in watching it and having to go back and re-watch just to put it all together again in my mind.

Well, I watched "Amazing Grace" the other night. That was a very, very good film. It is your basic, historical drama with a positive ending. It is about the abolition of slavery. If you know anything about the story (which I did), then you know how it ended anyway. Still, I love movies like this!!! Very well-acted! One of the better films that I have seen recently. 9.75/10.

I saw Stardust the other day. Robert De Niro made me laugh sooo much. 8/10 very entertaining.

Amalia, you want to know how crazy I am? There is someone that I really didn't like in it. That is why I didn't give it a 10/10. I didn't like the filmmakers' choice and so I took away a higher rating because of the one person. Other than that fact, I thought that the film was fine. :)

I watched "Awakenings" again last night. I haven't seen it in such a long time. Still, I have seen it. So it is a little ridiculous to stay up until 5:00 in the morning to watch the entire film like I had never seen it before! Anyway, I first saw this movie when I was 12. My mother got 2 tickets for a preview screening. Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams are both fantastic in the film. Both of them, in their own way, give heartbreaking performances. When I was 12 I thought it was a very good film. I think the same thing to this very day. It is a very sad story. Since it is based on a true story, it not only makes the story sadder, it also gives you a feeling of frustration for the situation of the characters. Sad, sad movie, but a VERY GOOD movie!! Definitely 10/10!!!!

LW, I absolutely loved "Awakenings" - a very fine, fine film with wonderful performances! You can't beat it. I have been wanting to re-watch it recently, isn't that funny? I may have picked that one up on VHS tape, when the video store sold out; I will have to check my stock. If not, my library has it, I am pretty certain of it.
:lol: LW, you are worse than I am - watching movies till 5 in the morning...at least I hit the bed around 3 and read till 5. ;) I ban myself from movie viewing past 3! :lol::lol: :lol: We are both hopeless I think.....:yawnb:

Have you read the book? I'm kind of scared to see the movie because I liked the book and it's so rare for me to like a movie of a book I've also liked. They always seem to screw it up somehow. :rolleyes:

I saw The Lives of Others this weekend. A movie that takes place in the 80's in East Germany and it's about a writer who is the subject of Stasi surveillance. It is, as you would suspect, depressing but with such a wonderful glimmer of humanity it brought tears to my eyes. Wonderful movie, would recommend it to all.

Agreed. It is quite a good movie. :thumbs_up

Although I can't say it brought tears to my eyes. I was kind of surprised to find out that the principal actor is deceased.

Puh. I would like to point out that it is quite an enjoyable film, and that I rated it 8/10 on IMDB. It's rated poorly because initially people might expect a horror film, but it turns out the films is about the people, rather than the horror. It's always been like this with Shyamalan. Although personally I prefer Unbreakable or 6th Sense. One other film of this director I've seen is Signs, which left me a little less impressed.

Yes, isn't it funny? My son loves Shyamalan and he hated "The Village". My friend told me she liked it and then I gave it a go and I really did like the film emensely. I saw it recently again. Most people love "Signs" the most, at least here in the US. I did not see "Lady of the Water" - wasn't that the title? BUT I would like to see it, because I like to judge, always, for myself. Have you seen it? I like M.N.S's style very much...he is a big Hitchcock fan and fashions his films after the master, with a lot of thought and care to details. He chose an incredible master to emulate, I think!

I know! I never do the resolution thing because I know that I can't commit to it, but I think I really should start to get to bed at a decent hour! That should be my resolution! I wouldn't be so tired now if I did it! Then again, usually when I go to bed, no matter how tired I am, I can NEVER fall asleep!

Me too again!...twins... I love Joaquin! Did you see him in "Ladder 49"? He is adorable and can act, for certain! I try to see all his films. Now did you like him in "Signs" and what did you think of that film? I really liked it, but there again, the public seems pretty down on that film. I don't know what it is they don't get about it. How funny - we are all in agreement, Amalia, you and me on "The Village", I just watched it again recently, and enjoyed every minute - I would give it a 9/10 too!
Check out Phoenix in "Return to Paradise" - really good film, I thought.

Which one, the Stasi guy or the writer? That scene where the Stasi guy picks up the book and finds the dedication to him just killed me, that's the scene that brought the tear.
