Great Gatsby Review

I agree here. I think yeah GAtsby had a bad side, but it wasn't explored or used in the novel. The side that matters is what is used in the novel, he was the nice guy of the whole lot. I mean look at Tom he was a right evil ....* He ended up killing Gatsby because he wanted to shift the blame and to kill the man that was obvious competition for his wife, such as he hadn't had before. And George was just a man. I liked the way you put that. I mean he was just acting out of grief he loved his wife - I think your words summed him up perfectly. Daisy? She is horrible, a perfectly awful character, you could almost see she just played with Gatsby because she could and because Tom didn't pay her enough attention. She and Tom were the most loathsome characters in the book.

I think it's time to change the syllabus!!!
There are many better books in the american and british literature (for example the books of Oscar Wilde, Fowles, Jane Austin, Huxley, Orwell, Hardy, Shelley, Joyce, Hemingway, ecc)
that we could read instead of The Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby
shows the american way of living at the time of the roaring twentys, the emancipation of women (the flappers), the new music (jazz) and dances (foxtrot), the ideas of eugenica in the high society,..ecc but at the end is superficial just like the whole period that the book is describing.

I don't think there's much about the emancipation of women in the novel. How is the end itself superficial? The characters are superficial, but isn't that the point Scott Fitz is making?

I think that there is much about the emancipation of women. The women are smoking, having parties, driving cars, going out,... think about the average woman of that time and her position. Most of the women were at home: cooking, watching after kids, doing houseworks, they were unschooled..ecc - and that was it.
Of course, the characters are superficial and this is what the author wanted to show us; but... I find the whole writing quiet superficial. I didn't say that's not a funny, interesting book, but I in my opinion there are many better books. Actually, I don't understand why we are analysing so much this book at schools... we are searching details that this book in fact doesn't have.

That would be all well and good if the book made any mention of the average woman of the time. The book hardly preoccupied itself with that particular aspect of the time.

The writing itself is great, I love Nick's wit and cynicism. It has that old fashioned exaggeration of tiny gestures element which makes it wonderful.

The book made attention of the women of the high class and it shows them as I wrote you last time. I don't think that the book hardly preoccupied itself with this particular aspect... but maybe you didn't notice it. In the book there aren't mentioned the average women, but I think every reader has his own imagination and the knowlendge of history that helps him in finding out also the asspects that arent's directly mentioned. I always put the story in the contest of time and space... Reading books only for a story it's foolish.
Yes... there are many nice parts of the book, I didn't say that the book is bad, but I think that there are many better books - that's all. I don't understand why every year the students have to read this book for the English class...

Gatsby is great because of his desire to raise himself in society, however his dream is doomed from the start because he isnt 'old money' and therefore lowered in society. To some extent he realises this but his extreme hope and intense passion (Daisy and becoming a part of the society of the 'East Eggers') are features which give him this sense of greatness.

Every book we have read in English Lit has been a romantic tragedy, its a waste of time all the people that are seriously into these books are female or gay.

He aint real get over it

Fitzgerald presented the structure as such that we learn of Gatsbys links to gangsterism after we have already built up a good image of him. Its quite clever because this way we do not condemn him as being corrupt throughout the book.

If you wanted to focus on Tom and Myrtle, look at the scene in chapter 2 at the apartment--right after they buy the dog. Almost any interaction between the two of them could be used to illustrate their relationship. I mean, he breaks her nose for heaven's sake...THAT makes a statement about a relationship, doncha think?
